Chapter 14 - The Last TableThe truth finally had nowhere left to hide

Matteo had taken Sophia.

Not to hurt her.

To protect her.

He had discovered Rosalia's plan.

Sophia's legal father was listed as Matteo.

Dante had raised her as his own.

The family had hidden it because Matteo was supposed to remain dead.

Tony knew.

Rosalia knew.

Lucia knew.

Dante knew nothing.

Until that night.

"I loved her."

Dante's voice was hollow.

Matteo stood across the kitchen.

"I know."

"You let me raise her."

"Because you were the only person I trusted."

Dante looked at Sophia.

She stared back.

"Daddy."

Dante's face broke.

He crouched.

"I'm here."

Sophia ran into his arms.

Matteo watched silently.

Rosalia entered.

Applauding.

"You really are sentimental."

Dante stood.

His eyes were deadly.

Rosalia held a gun.

Tony stood behind her.

And four armed men surrounded the room.

"We're finished," Rosalia said.

"No."

Dante shook his head.

"You are."

She laughed.

"With what?"

I stepped forward.

"The ledger."

Rosalia looked at me.

I held up the black book.

"You need it."

"No."

"You need my signature."

She hesitated.

"You can't transfer anything without me."

Her smile faded.

"And you need Sophia alive."

I continued.

"But you forgot one thing."

Rosalia frowned.

I held up my necklace.

"The original heir clause isn't in the ledger."

Her eyes widened.

"It's in the pendant."

My mother smiled faintly.

I pressed the crescent pendant against the table.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a microfilm strip.

Rosalia's expression changed completely.

"No."

Dante understood.

"Your father recorded everything."

My mother nodded.

"Every name. Every payment. Every murder."

Tony lunged.

Matteo tackled him.

Gunfire erupted.

Dante shielded Sophia.

I dropped behind the table.

Rosalia fired at me.

The bullet struck the wood.

I grabbed a bottle from the counter.

Threw it.

It hit her hand.

Her gun fell.

Dante moved.

One second later, Rosalia was on the floor.

Tony tried to run.

Matteo stopped him.

Then sirens filled the street.

Actual police this time.

Federal agents entered.

Rosalia stared at the ledger.

"What did you do?"

I answered.

"Nothing."

I pointed at the microfilm.

"The evidence did."

The police seized everything.

Tony was arrested.

Rosalia was arrested.

The Russo organization collapsed over the following weeks.

But the biggest shock came later.

The final document proved Sophia's inheritance was conditional.

She couldn't legally control anything until she turned eighteen.

Until then, the protected assets would be managed by a trustee.

That trustee was named.

Elina Valdez.

I stared at Dante.

"No."

He smiled slightly.

"You've always wanted a bakery."

"I don't want your blood money."

"It's not blood money anymore."

He placed the papers in front of me.

"It's clean."

"How?"

"Because my father built another set of accounts."

He slid over the deed.

The old bakery.

Fully paid.

In my name.

I couldn't speak.

Dante looked at me.

"You wanted a bakery."

I started crying.

Not because of the money.

Because for the first time, someone had heard my dream and treated it like it mattered.

Then Sophia tugged my hand.

"I want to help."

I laughed through tears.

"You're five."

"I'm a good helper."

Dante smiled.

The first real smile I'd ever seen on him.

Then the room fell quiet.

A federal agent entered.

"Mr. Russo."

Dante stood.

"Yes?"

"We found one more thing."

The agent placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Rosalia.

Tony.

Victor.

And another man.

A man we had never seen before.
