Chapter 6 - The Payroll GhostsAdrian spent the night in a safe house with Sophia and Emma.

Lucas stayed downstairs.

No one slept.

At four in the morning, Adrian spread the blue ledger across a dining table.

The first pages contained payroll anomalies.

The deeper pages contained names.

Then transactions.

Then photographs.

Some men were marked dead.

Some missing.

Some active.

But every name had one thing in common.

They had all been connected to Adrian's father.

Adrian whispered, “What was my father building?”

Sophia shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Lucas entered.

“We found the shooter’s vehicle.”

Adrian looked up.

“Where?”

“Abandoned two blocks away.”

“Fingerprint?”

“None.”

“Cameras?”

“Disabled.”

Adrian looked at the ledger again.

“Anything else?”

Lucas hesitated.

“We found a receipt.”

He placed it on the table.

A storage facility.

Unit 317.

Adrian frowned.

“Who rented it?”

Lucas looked uncomfortable.

“Graham Bell.”

The room went silent.

Adrian stood.

“Take me there.”

Lucas shook his head.

“No.”

Adrian looked at him.

“That wasn’t a suggestion.”

“You’re being watched.”

“I've been watched for twenty years.”

Lucas sighed.

“Then I'll drive.”

They left before sunrise.

Sophia remained with Emma.

The storage facility sat behind an abandoned factory.

Unit 317 opened with the same brass key.

Adrian inserted it.

The lock clicked.

Inside was one metal box.

Nothing else.

Lucas stood behind him.

Adrian opened it.

Photographs.

Hundreds.

Employees.

Judges.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Shipping managers.

And Sophia.

Adrian froze.

One photograph showed Sophia talking to Daniel outside Rose’s Diner.

Another showed Emma as a toddler.

Someone had been monitoring them for years.

Lucas whispered:

“Boss.”

Adrian turned.

There was another photograph.

It showed Adrian himself.

Taken the night he buried his father.

On the back was written:

The heir knows nothing.

Adrian felt something crack inside him.

He had spent twenty years believing he built his own empire.

Maybe he had merely inherited a machine.

And someone else had been operating it from the shadows.

Lucas reached for another photo.

Then stopped.

“What?”

“Look.”

The photograph showed Graham.

Standing beside another man.

Adrian recognized him immediately.

His father.

But the photo was impossible.

It had been taken fourteen years after his father's official death.

Adrian stared at it.

“No.”

Lucas turned the picture over.

A date was written on the back.

October 12.

Adrian knew the date.

That was the date his father supposedly died.

He slowly looked at Lucas.

“My father wasn't killed that night.”

Lucas said nothing.

“He disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“And somebody wanted me to believe he was dead.”

Lucas nodded.

“Looks that way.”

Adrian picked up another photograph.

This one showed a younger Graham.

Next to Sophia's husband.

Daniel was holding the same blue ledger.

Adrian's voice dropped.

“Daniel wasn't working for Graham.”

Lucas frowned.

“He was investigating him.”

Adrian turned the photograph over.

Written underneath:

Daniel found the original payroll.

Then another line:

Sophia knows where the witness is.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“What witness?”

A noise sounded outside.

Lucas drew his weapon.

Someone was walking toward the unit.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Adrian turned off the light.

The footsteps stopped.

A voice came through the metal door.

“Adrian?”

It was Graham.

Adrian's face hardened.

Graham spoke again.

“You've been asking the wrong questions.”

Adrian stepped toward the door.

“And you’ve been lying for twenty years.”

A pause.

Then Graham whispered:

“No, Adrian.”

“The lie began long before I met you.”

The door handle moved.

Adrian raised his weapon.

May you like

Graham said one final sentence.

“The man you think is dead is waiting for you.”
