The Little Girl's Lunchbox Stopped the Court Cold. Then the Tape Started Playing...

Chapter 1: The Voice on the Tape

The old cassette crackled before a man's trembling voice filled the silent courtroom.

"If you're hearing this, it means I no longer have the courage to tell the truth in person."

Every pair of eyes shifted toward the witness in the expensive gray suit.

"My name is Daniel Mercer," the recording continued. "I lied under oath. I was paid to testify against Emma Hayes. She never harmed anyone. The real crime happened years ago, inside Saint Matthew's Hospital."

The witness's face drained of color.

The little girl clutched the edge of the bench while the judge listened carefully.

"The newborn baby was switched that night. Records were destroyed. A mother lost her child, and an innocent woman became the perfect person to blame."

Gasps echoed throughout the courtroom.

Emma Hayes burst into tears.

The judge immediately ordered the bailiffs to detain the witness.

But before they could reach him, Daniel Mercer shouted, "You don't understand! They threatened my family!"

Then he pointed toward the back of the courtroom.

"They're still here."
