Chapter 4: The Hidden Passage

The metallic thud echoed again.
Closer this time.
Not from the hallway.
From inside the wall.
Daniel reacted first.
"Lights."
He rushed across the room and flipped a heavy switch.
Nothing happened.
He cursed under his breath.
"The emergency batteries only power the servers."
Another sound.
A scrape of metal against concrete.
Someone was unlocking another hidden door.
Jason.
He wasn't bluffing.
He really had built secret passages into the house.
Daniel grabbed the only thing that resembled a weapon: a steel pry bar leaning against one of the server racks.
He held it awkwardly.
Not like someone used to fighting.
Like a father who had no other choice.
"Emily."
His voice remained steady despite the fear in his eyes.
"If he comes through that wall..."
"I know."
"No."
He looked directly at me.
"I need you to listen."
I nodded.
"Run."
"I can't."
"You have to."
"My body won't let me."
His jaw tightened.
"Then crawl."
The hidden room had only one visible entrance: the bookshelf.
But if Jason knew that entrance...
He could block it.
Daniel swept his flashlight around the room.
"There has to be another exit."
His engineer's eyes searched every inch of concrete.
Electrical conduits.
Ventilation ducts.
Drainage pipes.
Nothing.
The walls looked seamless.
Too seamless.
He suddenly froze.
"The floor."
"What?"
He knelt beside one corner.
The concrete color was slightly different.
Lighter.
Newer.
He tapped it with the pry bar.
Thunk.
Hollow.
Hope surged through me.
A third metallic click echoed behind the wall.
This time it was followed by footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Jason wasn't rushing.
He wanted us to hear him coming.
A predator announcing itself.
Daniel drove the pry bar into the edge of the concrete panel.
It shifted barely half an inch.
Again.
He strained with all his weight.
The panel lifted.
Not concrete.
Steel disguised as concrete.
Beneath it...
A vertical maintenance shaft.
A narrow aluminum ladder disappeared into darkness.
Fresh air drifted upward.
"There!"
I whispered.
Daniel shined the flashlight down.
"I think it leads outside."
"You think?"
"I've never seen this before."
Another sound.
A heavy lock disengaging somewhere inside the wall.
Jason was almost through.
Daniel helped me toward the opening.
Every movement felt like broken glass inside my joints.
Halfway to the shaft, my legs collapsed.
Pain exploded through my knees.
I hit the floor hard.
The room spun.
No.
Not now.
Please...
Not now.
The autoimmune flare was accelerating.
My hands had begun shaking uncontrollably.
My fingertips tingled.
Warning signs.
Dr. Patel's voice echoed in my memory.
"When neurological symptoms begin, seek emergency treatment immediately."
Emergency treatment.
The words almost made me laugh.
A loud metallic bang exploded behind us.
The hidden wall shuddered.
Jason had reached the final door.
Daniel looked over his shoulder.
"We're out of time."
He wrapped one arm around my waist.
"I'm getting you down that ladder."
"You won't make it."
"I don't have to."
"What?"
"I just have to make sure you do."
The wall burst inward.
Dust filled the room.
A steel door slowly swung open.
Jason stepped through.
He wore black work gloves now.
The warm smile from earlier was gone.
His face had become strangely empty.
Expressionless.
Almost peaceful.
He looked first at me.
Then at Daniel.
"I hoped," Jason said quietly, "you'd leave before forcing me into this."
Daniel raised the pry bar.
"Stay back."
Jason sighed.
"I don't want to hurt you."
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You already helped try to kill your wife."
Jason's eyes never left mine.
"I gave Emily every chance."
"I loved her."
"You imprisoned her."
"I protected everyone."
He took another step.
Calm.
Controlled.
"There comes a point," Jason continued, "when caring for someone becomes... unsustainable."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"You mean inconvenient."
He actually considered the word.
Then nodded.
"Yes."
"Inconvenient."
"As though that justifies murder."
"I never touched you."
"You removed my medication!"
"I removed artificial interference."
His voice remained terrifyingly composed.
"Nature was going to take its course eventually."
"I simply stopped delaying it."
The sheer absence of remorse chilled me more than any scream could have.
Daniel swung first.
The pry bar sliced through the air.
Jason stepped aside effortlessly.
Almost as if he'd expected it.
He grabbed Daniel's wrist.
Twisted.
A sickening crack echoed through the room.
Daniel cried out.
The pry bar clattered across the floor.
Jason caught him by the throat and shoved him against the server rack.
Monitors crashed to the ground.
Screens shattered.
Sparks burst from exposed cables.
The surveillance feeds went dark.
For the first time...
Jason was no longer watching through cameras.
He was standing directly in front of me.
"Emily."
His voice softened again.
Almost gentle.
"Come home."
I stared.
"This is our home."
"No."
He smiled faintly.
"The bedroom."
"You've been through enough."
He extended one gloved hand toward me.
"I'll make you comfortable."
I finally understood.
He wanted me back in bed.
So when I died...
It would look peaceful.
Natural.
As though I had simply succumbed to illness in my sleep.
Behind him, Daniel suddenly lunged.
Ignoring his broken wrist, he tackled Jason from behind.
Both men slammed into the steel door.
The impact shook the room.
"GO!"
Daniel shouted.
"NOW!"
I dragged myself toward the maintenance shaft.
Every inch cost another burst of agony.
Behind me came grunts.
Furniture crashing.
Metal striking concrete.
Jason wasn't shouting.
He fought in complete silence.
That frightened me more.
I reached the opening.
Gripped the ladder.
Looked down.
At least thirty feet.
Too far to jump.
No choice.
I lowered one foot onto the top rung.
Then another.
My arms screamed in protest.
My swollen fingers barely held.
Above me, the fight intensified.
Then...
Silence.
Absolute silence.
My heart stopped.
Slowly...
Very slowly...
A shadow appeared above the shaft.
Someone was standing at the opening.
Looking down at me.
A single drop of blood fell from above.
It landed on my hand.
Warm.
Fresh.
Then Jason's calm voice drifted into the darkness.
"Daniel couldn't save his daughter."
A pause.
"He couldn't save you either."
I looked up.
Jason stood alone at the edge of the shaft.
His shirt was splattered with blood.
Daniel was nowhere to be seen.
Jason smiled sadly.
"Now..."
May you like
He reached toward the emergency ladder's release lever.
"...let's see if gravity finishes what your illness started."
