Chapter 13: The Father in the Shadows

The name sat on the paper like a threat.
Victor Carter.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Because that name belonged to a dead man.
At least...
That was what everyone believed.
Jason's father.
The founder of the Carter empire.
The man whose photograph hung inside their family home.
The man Margaret cried over every year on the anniversary of his death.
The man Jason claimed had shaped his entire childhood.
Dead.
Gone.
Buried.
Except now...
He wasn't.
Detective Harris read the letter three times before speaking.
"This changes everything."
We were back at the police station.
The abandoned building had become an evidence site.
Every document.
Every photograph.
Every recording.
Everything was being analyzed.
But the letter from Adrian had created a problem.
A very large problem.
Because if Victor Carter was alive...
Then every investigation from the past twelve years had been built on a lie.
"Are you sure this is his father?"
Detective Harris looked at Jason.
Jason sat across the room.
For the first time since all of this began...
He looked small.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
The confident man who organized every detail of life was gone.
Replaced by someone staring at the floor, surrounded by the consequences of every choice he had made.
"Yes."
His voice was quiet.
"That's my father's handwriting."
The detective placed the letter down.
"Your father died twelve years ago."
Jason nodded.
"That's what we were told."
"We?"
Jason looked up.
"My mother."
"Your brother?"
"Everyone."
He swallowed.
"My father wanted people to believe he was gone."
"Why?"
Jason stared at the table.
"Because dead people can't be investigated."
The room became silent.
The meaning was obvious.
Victor Carter hadn't disappeared.
He had escaped.
That night, I couldn't sleep.
The hospital room was dark.
The city lights outside moved across the ceiling.
I kept thinking about all the versions of my life that never happened.
The life before the illness.
The life before Jason's betrayal.
The life where I believed my biggest problem was simply getting healthy again.
I wondered if I had ever truly known the world I lived in.
Or if I had only been standing inside someone else's carefully designed illusion.
At 3:17 a.m., my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I stared at the screen.
Every instinct told me not to answer.
But after everything...
Fear had changed.
Before, fear controlled me.
Now, fear was information.
I answered.
"Emily."
The voice was old.
Calm.
Male.
My body immediately went cold.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then:
"You already know."
I sat up.
"Victor."
Silence.
Then a quiet laugh.
"So Jason told you."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Where are you?"
"Somewhere your husband never looked."
"You mean somewhere you hid."
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"Somewhere everyone agreed not to see."
I looked toward the hospital door.
Locked.
Safe.
But somehow...
I felt like he was already standing nearby.
"What do you want?"
"I want to correct the story."
I almost laughed.
"Your family has spent years destroying my life."
"No."
His voice sharpened.
"Your life was destroyed because people made decisions without understanding the truth."
"The truth?"
"Yes."
A pause.
"Jason lied."
"Margaret lied."
"Adrian lied."
"Everyone lied."
"And you expect me to believe you?"
"No."
His answer surprised me.
"I expect you to investigate."
The call ended.
No goodbye.
No threat.
Just silence.
I immediately called Detective Harris.
Within minutes, the police traced the number.
But the result was impossible.
The phone had been used from three different locations.
At the same time.
"How is that possible?"
Daniel asked.
He was sitting beside me when Detective Harris arrived.
The detective looked exhausted.
"Because whoever this is..."
"He knows exactly how to disappear."
Later that morning, Jason requested to speak with me.
I almost refused.
Almost.
But I needed answers.
Not from the man he pretended to be.
From the man he actually was.
He sat behind the glass partition.
No expensive clothes.
No perfect haircut.
No carefully controlled image.
Just Jason.
A man who had lost everything.
"You shouldn't be here."
I sat down.
"Neither should you."
The silence between us lasted a long time.
Then he said:
"My father wasn't just controlling."
"He was dangerous."
I listened.
"He built the company through fear."
"Everyone owed him something."
"Employees."
"Partners."
"Even family."
"Your brother?"
Jason looked away.
"Adrian was the only one who fought him."
"Then why did you hate him?"
"I didn't."
The answer came immediately.
"I was jealous."
That surprised me.
"Jealous?"
"Adrian could say no."
Jason smiled sadly.
"I couldn't."
He continued.
"When my father wanted something, I did it."
"When Margaret wanted something, I did it."
"When the company needed someone to lie..."
"I lied."
"When someone needed to be sacrificed..."
"I looked away."
His voice broke.
"I spent my whole life trying to be the son my father wanted."
"And I became exactly like him."
For the first time...
I saw the real tragedy of Jason Carter.
Not an excuse.
Not forgiveness.
A tragedy.
A person who spent so long trying to become worthy of love...
That he became someone incapable of giving it.
"But why did you target me?"
Jason closed his eyes.
"I didn't."
I stared.
"What?"
"The original plan wasn't yours."
"Then whose was it?"
He hesitated.
"My father's."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Jason looked at me.
"Victor found out about the factory investigation."
"He knew the evidence could destroy him."
"So he needed someone connected to the company."
"Someone believable."
"Someone disposable."
"And you..."
I whispered.
"Your family chose me."
Jason nodded.
"But why marry me?"
Jason looked devastated.
"Because I loved you."
The answer was immediate.
And somehow...
That hurt more.
Because love had existed.
Maybe.
At some point.
But love without courage was useless.
Love without protection was just a word.
The conversation ended when Detective Harris rushed into the room.
He looked at Jason.
Then at me.
"We found Victor."
Everyone froze.
"Where?"
The detective placed a photograph on the table.
An old building.
A private clinic.
A location overseas.
"He has been living under another name."
Jason stared at the picture.
"How?"
Detective Harris looked serious.
"Because someone has been paying for his entire life."
"Who?"
The detective hesitated.
Then answered:
"Adrian Carter."
The room went silent.
Impossible.
Adrian hated Victor.
Adrian wanted revenge.
Why would he protect him?
Unless...
Unless the story we knew was wrong.
Again.
That evening, police searched Adrian's old records.
They found one final file.
Hidden.
Encrypted.
Inside was a video recorded twelve years ago.
The date:
The night Adrian supposedly died.
The screen flickered.
A younger Jason appeared.
Standing beside a car.
Terrified.
Then Victor Carter walked into view.
Alive.
Healthy.
And behind him...
Was Adrian.
Not injured.
Not escaping.
Standing beside his father willingly.
Victor looked into the camera and said one sentence:
"Good."
"Now the family secret can survive."
The video ended.
And beneath it was a message.
Written by Adrian.
