Chapter 5: The Vault Beneath the Manor

The rain outside had become a storm.
Thunder rolled across the hills surrounding Harrington Manor, shaking the ancient windows.
Inside, no one noticed.
Every eye remained fixed on Catherine.
She stood perfectly still, her fingers hidden inside her handbag, wrapped around the cold metal key.
It was smaller than a house key.
Black titanium.
No markings except a tiny engraved H.
To everyone else, it looked ordinary.
To Catherine...
It represented her last chance.
Special Agent Marcus Hale closed his notebook.
"Miss Harrington, for the moment, you're not under arrest."
"We only ask that you remain available while the investigation proceeds."
Catherine forced a smile.
"Of course."
She even nodded politely.
"I have nothing to hide."
Clara watched her carefully.
Something was wrong.
Not with Catherine's words.
With her eyes.
They were no longer angry.
They were calculating.
Clara had seen that expression before.
Years earlier.
On the face of a corporate executive moments before he deleted millions of dollars' worth of evidence.
People often became calm when they had already decided what they were going to do.
Samuel quietly stepped beside Clara.
"Including tonight..."
she whispered.
"What?"
"I've seen that look before."
Samuel barely moved his lips.
"So have I."
Richard noticed them exchanging glances.
"What is it?"
Clara answered softly.
"She's planning something."
Across the room, Lily had become sleepy.
The long evening had exhausted her.
She rested her head against Clara's side.
"Mommy..."
"I'm tired."
Clara stroked her hair.
"I know, sweetheart."
Margaret smiled warmly.
"I'll take her upstairs."
Lily looked at Clara.
"Can Auntie Margaret read me a story?"
Margaret laughed through tears.
"I'd be honored."
Clara kissed Lily's forehead.
"I'll come tuck you in soon."
Lily hugged her mother before reaching for Margaret's hand.
As they walked toward the staircase, Lily suddenly turned around.
She waved.
"Goodnight, Great-Grandpa!"
Richard smiled.
"Goodnight, little angel."
For the first time in years...
The old man felt hope inside this house.
He had no idea that within the hour, the manor itself would become a crime scene.
Catherine noticed everyone watching Lily.
No one was watching her.
Perfect.
She slowly stepped backward.
Only a few inches.
Then another.
Blending naturally among relatives.
She reached the hallway unnoticed.
One more step...
Then another...
Until she disappeared behind the carved oak doors.
Five seconds passed.
Ten.
Fifteen.
Clara suddenly frowned.
"Where's Catherine?"
Samuel looked around.
She was gone.
Marcus reacted instantly.
"Find her."
Two investigators rushed into the hallway.
Nothing.
Empty.
Marcus turned toward estate security.
"Lock every exit."
The chief guard hesitated.
"Sir..."
"There are twenty-three exterior doors."
"Lock all of them."
The guards scattered.
Meanwhile...
Beneath Harrington Manor...
Catherine hurried through a narrow stone corridor hidden behind an antique wine cellar.
Few people knew the passage existed.
Richard.
Samuel.
And Catherine.
She had discovered it years earlier by accident while exploring the estate.
At the end of the corridor stood a massive steel door.
Nearly a foot thick.
No keypad.
No handle.
Only a small circular slot.
Catherine inserted the black titanium key.
A soft click echoed through the tunnel.
Hydraulic locks disengaged.
The enormous door slowly opened.
Inside...
Rows of fireproof cabinets stretched across a climate-controlled underground vault.
Some contained original company contracts dating back sixty years.
Others held priceless historical documents.
Family records.
Private correspondence.
The legal foundations of the Harrington empire.
But Catherine ignored them all.
She walked directly toward Cabinet Seven.
She entered another code.
The drawer slid open.
Inside lay a single black binder.
Its cover bore no title.
Only one phrase embossed in silver.
Project Legacy.
Catherine smiled.
"So..."
she whispered.
"You kept everything."
Upstairs...
Marcus received a radio call.
"Agent Hale!"
"We found a hidden passage!"
Everyone rushed toward the wine cellar.
Richard's expression turned pale.
"No..."
Samuel looked equally alarmed.
"She knows about the vault."
Marcus frowned.
"What vault?"
Richard answered.
"The archive."
Samuel immediately corrected him.
"No."
"It's much more than that."
Marcus looked between them.
"What exactly is stored down there?"
Richard remained silent.
Samuel finally spoke.
"Every secret this family has ever buried."
Marcus's face hardened.
"We move now."
The steel security door stood open when they arrived.
A bad sign.
Very bad.
Marcus drew his flashlight.
Two agents entered first.
The underground vault was eerily quiet.
Cabinets lined the walls.
Most remained untouched.
Then they noticed one open drawer.
Cabinet Seven.
Empty.
"Catherine!"
Marcus shouted.
No answer.
Only silence.
Then...
Footsteps.
Running.
Deep inside the vault.
The agents sprinted after the sound.
The underground corridors twisted beneath the estate like a maze.
Finally...
They entered a circular records chamber.
Catherine stood in the center.
Holding the black binder.
In her other hand...
A lighter.
"No closer."
Her voice echoed against the stone walls.
Marcus stopped.
"So that's your plan?"
She laughed.
"If these documents disappear..."
"So does your case."
Samuel slowly stepped forward.
"Catherine..."
"You don't know what's inside."
She smiled bitterly.
"I know enough."
"They're the original financial records."
"The offshore accounts."
"The political donations."
"The hidden acquisitions."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"You're wrong."
She frowned.
"What?"
"Those aren't financial records."
For the first time...
Catherine looked uncertain.
"What do you mean?"
Richard's voice became heavy.
"They're adoption records."
Silence.
She blinked.
"What?"
Samuel closed his eyes.
"You were never supposed to learn this way."
Richard took another slow step.
"Project Legacy began after your mother died."
"I feared this family would destroy itself through pride."
"So I decided..."
"...that blood alone would never determine the future of Harrington."
Catherine stared at him.
"I don't understand."
Richard pointed at the binder.
"Inside are the identities of every child secretly sponsored by the Harrington Foundation over the past forty years."
"Orphans."
"Abandoned children."
"Refugees."
"Children given new lives."
Marcus frowned.
"What does that have to do with succession?"
Richard looked at Clara.
"Everything."
"The next generation of Harrington leadership was never limited to my descendants."
"If one day my own family proved unworthy..."
"I wanted the company to belong to those who understood gratitude."
Catherine slowly lowered the lighter.
"No..."
Richard nodded.
"Yes."
"The future heirs were chosen by character."
"Not by surname."
The realization struck Catherine like lightning.
All these years...
She had believed the Harrington fortune existed solely for the Harrington bloodline.
Instead...
Richard had quietly spent decades preparing for the possibility that his own family might fail.
And tonight...
They had.
She looked at Clara.
"Did you know?"
Clara answered honestly.
"No."
"This is the first time I've heard about Project Legacy."
Richard smiled sadly.
"I hoped I'd never need to reveal it."
Catherine's hands trembled.
Everything she had fought for...
Everything she had sacrificed...
Had been built on an illusion.
She looked down at the binder.
Then at the lighter.
Then back at Richard.
For a brief moment...
Everyone thought she might surrender.
Instead...
She whispered,
"If I can't have this legacy..."
"...no one will."
She flicked the lighter.
A small blue flame sprang to life.
May you like
And she lowered it toward the edge of the binder.
