Chapter 4: A Desperate Gamble

No one returned to their seat.

The feast prepared by the estate's finest chefs grew cold beneath silver covers, untouched as the tension in the dining hall thickened.

Catherine stood alone.

Just half an hour earlier, relatives had rushed to flatter her.

Now they instinctively kept their distance, as though standing too close might stain their own reputations.

She hated that feeling.

Being ignored.

Being pitied.

She could tolerate enemies.

She could never tolerate irrelevance.

Her nails dug into her palms until tiny crescents appeared in her skin.

"This isn't over."

Her voice was low.

Almost calm.

Too calm.

Richard heard it.

So did Clara.

People who had spent years around power knew that quiet anger was often more dangerous than shouting.

Samuel Reeves carefully placed Richard's will back into the leather portfolio.

"The succession clause has now taken effect."

He addressed the room with practiced precision.

"As of eight twenty-three this evening..."

"Catherine Harrington is permanently removed from the line of succession."

Several relatives inhaled sharply.

Permanently.

Not suspended.

Not pending review.

Permanent.

Catherine laughed.

A brittle, hollow sound.

"You think I care about a title?"

She looked toward Clara.

"I know how businesses work."

"Power isn't paper."

"It's loyalty."

"It's influence."

"It's money."

"You've embarrassed me."

"But tomorrow morning everyone will forget this little performance."

Clara remained silent.

Richard finally spoke.

"No."

"Tomorrow morning..."

"They'll read the news."

Catherine frowned.

"What news?"

Richard nodded toward Samuel.

"It's time."

Samuel opened another folder.

"This afternoon, before dinner, Mr. Harrington signed the final authorization."

"What authorization?" Catherine demanded.

Samuel looked directly at her.

"The public restructuring announcement."

Her expression froze.

"What restructuring?"

"The Harrington Group will transition to an independent charitable trust over the next ten years."

Silence.

Even Clara looked surprised.

Richard had never mentioned this.

Samuel continued.

"Forty-nine percent of future annual profits will fund education, children's hospitals, veterans' rehabilitation, and scientific research."

Several executives blinked in disbelief.

Forty-nine percent?

That represented billions.

James stepped forward.

"Grandfather..."

"Are we giving away half the company?"

Richard smiled faintly.

"No."

"I'm giving it back."

He slowly walked toward one of the enormous windows overlooking the estate.

Rain had begun falling outside.

Soft at first.

Then harder.

"I've spent sixty years building wealth."

"I've watched relatives fight over money they never earned."

"I've attended funerals where people discussed inheritances before the burial."

He sighed.

"I refuse to let that become my legacy."

He turned back toward the family.

"When I was twenty-six..."

"I owned one pair of shoes."

"They had holes."

"I wrapped newspaper around my feet during winter."

Many younger family members exchanged skeptical glances.

They had grown up surrounded by unimaginable luxury.

They couldn't picture Richard as poor.

"I promised myself..."

"If I ever became wealthy..."

"I would never worship wealth."

His gaze landed on Lily.

"Somewhere along the way..."

"My family did."

Across the room, Lily quietly tugged Clara's sleeve.

"Mommy?"

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Is Great-Grandpa sad?"

Clara smiled gently.

"A little."

Lily thought for a moment.

Then she climbed off her chair.

Every adult watched curiously as the little girl walked across the marble floor.

She stopped in front of Richard.

Without saying a word...

She hugged him.

The old man froze.

No one had hugged Richard Harrington during a board meeting.

Or a family dinner.

Or any formal gathering.

Perhaps not in years.

His hands trembled before slowly wrapping around the little girl.

"It's okay," Lily whispered.

"My teacher says crying makes your heart lighter."

Richard closed his eyes.

Another tear escaped.

This time...

He didn't wipe it away.

Catherine watched the scene with growing frustration.

"This is ridiculous."

"A child hugs him and suddenly she's everyone's angel?"

Margaret turned sharply.

"No."

"The child reminded us how to be human."

At that exact moment...

One of the estate's security officers hurried into the dining hall.

His expression was unusually tense.

"Mr. Harrington."

Richard looked up.

"What is it?"

The officer hesitated.

"There are federal investigators at the front gate."

The room erupted.

"Investigators?"

"What happened?"

"They're here tonight?"

Samuel frowned.

"Did they say why?"

The officer nodded.

"They have a warrant."

Every eye turned toward Catherine.

She immediately exploded.

"I didn't do anything!"

"I haven't broken any laws!"

Samuel calmly asked,

"Whose name is on the warrant?"

The officer swallowed.

"Harrington Capital Holdings."

Not Catherine.

The company itself.

Richard's expression darkened.

"Bring them in."

Within minutes, three investigators entered.

Leading them was Special Agent Marcus Hale.

A composed man in his mid-forties.

Professional.

Unemotional.

He introduced himself politely.

"Mr. Harrington."

"Thank you for receiving us."

Richard gestured toward the table.

"Tell me why you're here."

Marcus opened a slim folder.

"We've been investigating a series of offshore transactions involving Harrington Capital."

"Our evidence indicates approximately three hundred million dollars was diverted through shell corporations over the past five years."

Gasps filled the room.

Three hundred million.

Marcus continued.

"We believe the fraud required executive authorization."

His eyes scanned the room.

"We're here to secure company records before they can be destroyed."

Samuel stepped forward immediately.

"You'll have full cooperation."

Marcus nodded appreciatively.

"Thank you."

Then he asked the question that made Catherine's blood run cold.

"Who served as Executive Vice President during that period?"

Every head slowly turned toward her.

She took an involuntary step backward.

"No..."

"No..."

"You can't seriously think..."

Marcus interrupted politely.

"We're not accusing anyone tonight."

"We're collecting evidence."

"But yes..."

"The signatures currently under review belong to Catherine Harrington."

"I was framed!"

Catherine shouted.

"I signed hundreds of documents!"

"I trusted my finance department!"

Marcus wrote something in his notebook.

"That may be true."

"We'll determine that."

Samuel quietly handed Marcus a digital tablet.

"Agent Hale..."

"I believe you'll want this."

Marcus looked down.

"What is it?"

"The Director's audit."

Clara looked toward Samuel, surprised.

"You completed it?"

Samuel nodded.

"This morning."

Marcus opened the file.

Page after page of financial analysis appeared.

Offshore accounts.

Transfer histories.

Corporate ownership maps.

Every suspicious transaction had already been traced.

The report was meticulous.

Marcus looked up slowly.

"This investigation would normally take us six months."

Samuel smiled faintly.

"The Director began it eighteen months ago."

Every executive turned toward Clara.

She had suspected corruption long before tonight.

She simply hadn't acted publicly.

Not until Catherine crossed a line she could not ignore.

Marcus closed the tablet.

"This changes everything."

He looked at Clara.

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"Why wait?"

Clara glanced toward Lily.

"Because financial crimes can be repaired."

"But character..."

She looked directly at Catherine.

"Character reveals itself."

"I needed to know whether she was merely ambitious..."

"...or truly dangerous."

Marcus nodded thoughtfully.

"And tonight answered that."

"Yes."

Catherine's breathing became erratic.

Everything was slipping away.

Her title.

Her inheritance.

Her allies.

Now possibly her freedom.

Panic replaced pride.

And panic led to terrible decisions.

Slowly...

Almost unnoticed...

She slipped her hand into her designer handbag.

Inside lay a small electronic key.

One she had sworn never to use unless absolutely necessary.

It unlocked a private vault hidden beneath the estate.

A vault containing documents no one else knew existed.

Documents that could destroy the Harrington family forever.

As Catherine's fingers closed around the key, only one thought echoed in her mind.

If I'm going down...

May you like

I'm taking every one of them with me.
