Chapter 15 - The Dog Who Knew the WayThe train disappeared into the night.

Alex stood in the darkness, breathing hard.

Behind him, the station had gone strangely quiet.

Megan was holding Noah.

Eva knelt beside Jet.

The dog was alive.

Barely.

“Stay with us,” Eva whispered.

Jet opened his eyes.

His tail moved once.

Alex looked at the woman standing on the platform.

His mother.

She had not moved.

He ran toward her.

“Mom!”

She caught him.

“Alex.”

“Who was the woman on the train?”

His mother stared at him.

“Not a woman.”

“What?”

“An imitation.”

Alex frowned.

Then he remembered the files.

The photographs.

The warnings.

The line written on the mirror.

YOU FOUND THE WRONG CHILD.

His mother spoke softly.

“They used identities.”

“Fake deaths.”

“Fake families.”

“Fake records.”

“Fake people.”

Alex looked toward the tracks.

“Then the woman on the train may not be you.”

“No.”

“Then who is she?”

His mother looked at Claire.

“Someone who has been watching this family for years.”

Claire nodded.

“The governor's daughter.”

Alex stared.

“What?”

“She was the one who managed the records.”

Megan looked at Eva.

“Then why did she look like your mother?”

Eva answered:

“Because your mother disappeared twenty years ago.”

Alex turned.

His mother stood beside him.

“You're saying…”

She touched his face.

“I am not the woman you remember.”

Silence.

Alex stepped backward.

“Then who are you?”

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“Your father's partner.”

Everything collapsed at once.

His entire childhood.

Every birthday.

Every photograph.

Every memory.

A carefully constructed life.

Jet suddenly stood.

Despite the blood.

Despite the wound.

The dog walked toward the tracks.

Alex watched him.

“What are you doing?”

Jet looked back.

Then moved down the platform.

Step by step.

Eva followed.

Megan followed her.

Noah held Claire's hand.

Alex looked at the tunnel.

He understood.

The story wasn't over.

Jet had done it again.

He wasn't chasing danger.

He was following the person who could lead them to the truth.

Alex ran.

The dog led them through the old service tunnel.

They emerged at another abandoned platform.

A single room stood ahead.

The door opened.

Inside was a woman.

Older.

Weak.

Sitting beside a small window.

She looked at Jet.

The dog ran to her.

She smiled.

“Good boy.”

Alex stopped.

He knew her face.

He had seen it in every missing-child file.

Claire.

But Claire was standing behind him.

Two Claires.

Alex whispered:

“No…”

The woman by the window looked at him.

“Your father told me you'd come.”

Claire behind him began crying.

Megan stared at both women.

“Which one is my sister?”

The woman by the window answered.

“Neither.”

Alex felt the ground disappear beneath him.

The woman opened a drawer.

Inside was a final photograph.

A little girl.

Eva.

Standing between the two women.

And a note written beneath it:

EVA WAS NEVER THE FIRST CHILD.

Alex looked at Jet.

The dog stared at the photograph.

Then he turned toward a locked door.

He barked.

Once.

Twice.

Alex slowly reached for the handle.

Something moved on the other side.

A child's hand slipped beneath the door.

Tiny fingers.

A red mitten.

Alex stared at it.

The child whispered:

“Is Jet here?”

Eva stepped forward.

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then:

“Good.”

The door unlocked from the inside.

And somewhere far away, a train whistle screamed through the darkness.

The search for Eva had been over.

The real search had just begun.
