Chapter 12 - THE BLOOD KEYThe laptop contained a biometric system.

Fingerprint.
Voice.
DNA.
Mason stared at it.
“Your father built something nobody could steal.”
“Why would he use me?”
“Because he trusted you.”
“I was eighteen.”
“You were predictable.”
Delaney glared at him.
“Excuse me?”
“You never trusted money.”
She remembered.
Her father had always told her:
Never chase wealth.
Never trust easy answers.
Never sign anything you don't understand.
He had left her almost nothing.
Except a small silver pendant.
She wore it still.
Mason saw it.
“That.”
Delaney touched the pendant.
“My father gave me this the week before he died.”
“Open it.”
She did.
Inside was a tiny glass capsule.
A dried drop of blood.
Delaney stared.
“Oh my God.”
Mason whispered:
“DNA key.”
They connected the capsule to the biometric device.
The machine scanned.
A green light appeared.
The laptop unlocked.
Folders appeared.
Hundreds.
One titled:
PROJECT ECHO
Another:
QUILL NETWORK
Another:
FEDERAL ACCESS
And another:
DELaney VOSS
She opened it.
Inside was a twelve-year surveillance file.
Photographs of her.
School.
College.
First job.
Apartment.
Friends.
Relationships.
Everything.
Someone had watched her entire adult life.
She opened the final document.
It was a letter from her father.
I have protected you by staying away.
You believe I abandoned you.
I allowed you to believe it because the truth would have killed you.
Delaney's eyes filled.
The organization knows Ronan exists.
They know you exist.
But they do not know what I taught you.
Delaney frowned.
“What did he teach me?”
Mason looked at the screen.
A video loaded.
Her father appeared.
“When you were nine, I taught you a game.”
Delaney remembered.
A memory game.
Numbers.
Shapes.
Songs.
Passwords.
Hidden patterns.
Her father smiled.
“You thought it was for fun.”
Delaney suddenly understood.
The account key wasn't Ronan's memory.
It wasn't her DNA.
It was something much simpler.
Something she had carried her entire life.
A sequence hidden inside a childhood song.
She whispered the first notes.
The laptop accepted them.
A massive digital archive opened.
Names.
Payments.
Evidence.
Videos.
Blackmail.
Every piece of Project Echo.
Mason stared.
“This could destroy them.”
“No.”
Delaney looked at the screen.
“It could destroy everyone.”
Then a live feed appeared.
Ronan.
He was standing.
Not tied.
Lena was beside him.
And the old Quill stood behind them.
But another person entered the room.
Delaney froze.
Her father.
Alive.
He looked into the camera.
“Delaney.”
She couldn't breathe.
He smiled sadly.
“I am sorry.”
“You're alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let us grieve you.”
“I had to.”
“You let Mom die believing you were dead.”
His eyes closed.
“I know.”
Delaney's anger exploded.
“You don't get to come back and ask me to forgive you.”
“I won't.”
“What do you want?”
Her father looked at the camera.
“I want you to understand why I disappeared.”
Then the old Quill stepped forward.
“He's lying.”
Delaney stared.
Her father didn't protest.
The old man smiled.
“Your father wasn't hiding from us.”
“He was working for us.”
Delaney's world collapsed.
“No.”
Her father looked down.
Ronan screamed:
“Don't listen to him!”
The old Quill laughed.
Then Lena whispered:
“Ask him who ordered the first roadside stop.”
Delaney looked at her father.
Silence.
May you like
Finally, he spoke.
“I did.”
