Chapter 5 - The Photograph in the Locked DrawerRichard rushed into the hallway.

The stranger was gone.

Only a swinging door remained.

“Stop!”

A security guard ran after him.

Richard followed, but the corridor was empty.

No one.

He returned to the hospital room.

Ethan stared at him.

“What happened?”

“Someone was watching us.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

Detective Mason stepped closer.

“Mr. Hart, the hospital entrance is secure.”

Richard looked at him.

“So was my daughter's wedding.”

The detective said nothing.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“I told you.”

“Told me what?”

“This was bigger than us.”

Richard turned.

“You knew someone might try to kill Olivia.”

“I suspected.”

“You suspected enough to create a life insurance policy.”

“Yes.”

“You suspected enough to hide things from me.”

“Yes.”

“And now you want me to believe you're protecting her.”

Ethan looked at Olivia.

“Yes.”

Olivia watched him with tears in her eyes.

“Then tell me the truth.”

Ethan looked down.

“I haven't been honest.”

Richard folded his arms.

“Finally.”

“My mother wasn't the only person who knew about the threat.”

“Who else?”

“My brother.”

“Julian.”

“Yes.”

“You saw him?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“Three months ago.”

Richard's jaw tightened.

“You lied.”

“I was trying to protect him.”

“From whom?”

Ethan looked toward Detective Mason.

“The police.”

Richard frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Julian is wanted.”

“For what?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Murder.”

The room fell silent.

Olivia's eyes widened.

“No.”

Ethan nodded.

“Three years ago, a banker was found dead.”

“Julian killed him?”

“They found Julian's fingerprints.”

“But?”

“I don't believe he did it.”

Richard stared.

“What happened to Julian after that?”

“He disappeared.”

Richard's phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

A photograph.

He opened it.

His breath stopped.

It showed Olivia and Ethan entering the church that morning.

Another photograph showed Richard talking to Grace.

Another showed Evelyn leaving a private club.

Then a fourth arrived.

A photograph of Richard asleep in his hotel room.

Taken from inside.

His blood ran cold.

Ethan saw it.

“Who sent that?”

“I don't know.”

Detective Mason took the phone.

“These were taken recently.”

“How do you know?”

“The metadata.”

He looked up.

“Someone has been inside your hotel.”

Richard remembered his suite.

The locked desk drawer.

The drawer where he kept family documents.

He rushed downstairs.

The hotel manager protested, but Richard ignored him.

He entered the suite.

Everything looked untouched.

Bed.

Suitcase.

Desk.

He opened the locked drawer.

It was empty.

Richard froze.

The papers were gone.

“What was in there?” Ethan asked.

Richard's voice shook.

“Your father's old trust documents.”

Ethan stared.

“You had them?”

“I found them after your wedding invitation arrived.”

“What did they contain?”

“I never knew.”

He searched the drawer again.

At the very bottom, under a false panel, his fingers touched something.

A small brass key.

Richard pulled it out.

A single number had been engraved on it.

17.

“What is that?” Ethan asked.

Richard didn't answer.

Because he had seen the same number before.

On the bottom of the old photograph of the Cole family.

The one containing three children.

Evelyn.

Her husband.

And two sons.

Ethan.

Julian.

Richard had always assumed the number was meaningless.

Now it wasn't.

He turned to Detective Mason.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

“The Grand Bellamy has seventeen private storage rooms beneath the hotel.”

Ethan stared.

“My family doesn't use them anymore.”

Richard held up the key.

“One of them does.”

They returned to the hotel under police escort.

The basement smelled of dust and cold stone.

Room after room passed.

Then 17.

The key turned.

The door opened.

Inside were dozens of boxes.

Old photographs.

Bank statements.

Trust records.

Medical files.

And one red folder sitting alone on a wooden table.

Richard opened it.

The first page was a death certificate.

Julian Cole.

The second page was a newspaper article.

COLE HEIR KILLED IN BOATING ACCIDENT.

The third page made Richard's hands tremble.

A hospital document.

A boy admitted under a false name.

Age nineteen.

Date exactly matching Julian's supposed death.

Richard looked at Ethan.

“What is this?”

Ethan stepped closer.

His face went pale.

“This is the hospital where Julian disappeared.”

Richard turned the page.

The patient had survived.

But someone had signed the discharge papers.

The signature belonged to Evelyn Cole.

Richard looked up.

“Your mother knew he survived.”

Ethan whispered,

“Yes.”

Then a sound came from inside the room.

A soft click.

The door locked behind them.

Richard turned.

The lights went out.

May you like

And a voice spoke from the darkness.

“You should never have opened that file.”
