Chapter 14 - The Woman Behind the Fire“Evelyn!”

She stopped.

For one second, she looked directly at Richard.

Then she ran.

Mason shouted for officers to block the exits.

Richard followed.

The fire had been contained to one section of the east wing.

Smoke filled the basement.

Evelyn reached Room 18.

She inserted the key.

Richard caught her before she could close the door.

“Why?”

Evelyn turned.

Her face was strangely calm.

“Because this is the only place left.”

“For what?”

“To finish what Maria started.”

Richard stared.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Olivia was my daughter?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

Richard frowned.

“I knew she was Julian's.”

Silence.

Olivia stepped closer.

“Then why did you hate me?”

Evelyn's expression broke.

“I never hated you.”

“You tried to stop my marriage.”

“I tried to stop you from becoming trapped in this family.”

“Why?”

“Because every person who gets close to the trust ends up dead.”

Richard stared.

“Your husband.”

“Yes.”

“Julian.”

“Yes.”

“Maria.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I knew Daniel was behind it.”

“Then why didn't you go to the police?”

“Because he had evidence against me.”

“What evidence?”

Evelyn opened the suitcase.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Medical documents.

And a blood-stained child's bracelet.

Olivia stared.

“That was mine.”

“Yes.”

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“When I was born?”

Evelyn nodded.

“Maria brought you to me.”

“What?”

“Your mother knew Daniel would kill Julian.”

“So she took me?”

“She asked me to hide you.”

Richard's voice trembled.

“You agreed?”

“Because I had already lost one son.”

She looked toward Julian.

“I refused to lose another.”

The room went silent.

Olivia picked up the bracelet.

“What happened after?”

“Daniel found us.”

“I lied.”

“I told him you were Richard's biological daughter.”

“And he believed you?”

“For years.”

Richard looked at the documents.

“So the trust wasn't what kept us alive.”

“No.”

“What did?”

Evelyn pointed toward the far wall.

“The archive.”

Behind the wall was a steel cabinet.

Inside were dozens of recordings.

Every conversation.

Every payment.

Every threat.

Every secret Daniel had buried.

Evelyn had spent nineteen years collecting evidence.

Then she handed Richard one final cassette.

“Your wife recorded this before she died.”

Richard pressed play.

Maria's voice came through.

“Richard, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I couldn't tell you because Daniel was watching.”

Maria continued.

“But there is one person I trust.”

Richard waited.

Then came the name.

“Evelyn.”

Richard looked at her.

Maria continued.

“She protected Olivia.”

“She protected Julian.”

“And she protected you.”

Richard's eyes filled.

Then Maria said something that made everyone freeze.

“But there is another truth.”

Julian stepped forward.

“What?”

Maria spoke slowly.

“Julian is not Olivia's biological father.”

Olivia's face went blank.

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“What?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

Maria's recording continued.

“I lied to everyone.”

“I needed Daniel to believe Julian was the father.”

“Because Olivia's real father is the one person Daniel never suspected.”

The tape crackled.

A name was almost audible.

Then static swallowed it.

Richard stared.

“Play it again.”

They replayed it.

Still static.

Again.

Nothing.

Then Julian noticed a hidden marker on the cassette.

A number.

19.

Richard looked toward Evelyn.

“There's another room.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Room 19.”

Richard stared.

“The hotel only has eighteen.”

Evelyn whispered,

“Exactly.”

A wall panel opened.

Behind it was another chamber.

Inside was a single portrait.

A young Maria.

A young man beside her.

And a newborn Olivia.

Richard looked at the man.

His body went cold.

He knew him.

Everyone did.

He had been a famous businessman.

A philanthropist.

A man who had attended Olivia's wedding.

A man who had hugged Richard that morning.

Richard whispered his name.

“Thomas Bellamy.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Maria's first love.”

Richard stepped backward.

“Thomas.”

Julian stared at the portrait.

“But he's dead.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed to the back of the photograph.

Written there were five words.

He has been alive all along.

Then the basement door slammed shut.

Footsteps echoed above them.

A man's voice called out.

“Evelyn.”

Everyone froze.

“It's time.”

Evelyn looked at Richard.

May you like

Her face went white.

“Thomas has come back.”
