Chapter 19 - The FatherNobody moved.

Evan's father stepped into the room.

He looked older than any photograph.

But alive.

Mara began crying.

“You're alive.”

He looked at her.

“Barely.”

Evan couldn't speak.

His father smiled.

“You grew up.”

Evan's voice finally came.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I had no choice.”

“You let them experiment on us.”

“I tried to stop them.”

“You failed.”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt more than any excuse.

His father approached Lucas.

The boy stared.

“Are you my grandfather?”

“Yes.”

“Did you hurt my dad?”

His grandfather looked at Evan.

“More than I could ever forgive myself for.”

Evan's father explained the final truth.

Helix had never been interested in immortality.

They wanted continuity.

To preserve consciousness beyond death.

The company believed human identity was information.

Information could be stored.

Stored information could be transferred.

Transferred information could survive.

Evan had been the first successful transfer.

Lucas was the first naturally occurring convergence.

Everything Helix had spent twenty years chasing had appeared inside one child.

But there was one final problem.

The system was unstable.

Lucas could carry the memories.

But eventually they would consume him.

“How long?” Evan asked.

His father looked at the monitors.

“Days.”

Mara cried.

“There must be a solution.”

“There is.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The archive must be destroyed.”

Voss shook her head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“That would erase all the memories.”

“All of them.”

Evan stared.

“Then Lucas?”

“He survives.”

“But he'll lose them.”

His father nodded.

“Everything except his own.”

Lucas listened.

“I won't remember you?”

Evan's heart broke.

His father looked at him.

“You will.”

“How?”

“Love doesn't live in memory alone.”

The words silenced everyone.

Then Evan understood.

Lucas didn't need every memory.

He needed his own life.

His own childhood.

His own future.

The archive had to go.

Evan looked at Mara.

“We do it.”

She nodded.

The destruction sequence began.

Five minutes.

The old files burned.

The screens went dark.

The hidden servers overheated.

Helix's twenty-year history was consumed.

But before the final system shut down, Lucas suddenly grabbed his father's hand.

“Wait.”

“What?”

Lucas looked at Evan.

“There is one memory I want to keep.”

Evan smiled.

“Which one?”

Lucas pointed to the ball.

“The first time you found me.”

Evan laughed through tears.

“That wasn't exactly a good day.”

“It was for me.”

“Why?”

“Because that's the day I found my dad.”

The system shut down.

Every screen went black.

The facility fell silent.

For the first time in twenty years, there were no alarms.

No voices.

No secrets.

Only quiet.

Then Nina whispered:

“It's over.”

Evan looked at the ball.

He believed her.

Until the ball rolled across the floor by itself.

Stopping at his feet.

A tiny light blinked beneath the leather.

One last file.

One final message.

PROJECT TWO IS ACTIVE.

Evan stared.

His father's face changed.

Mara whispered:

“No.”

Lucas looked up.

“Dad?”

Evan picked up the ball.

“What is Project Two?”

May you like

His father answered.

“The one your mother never told us about.”
