Chapter 15 - The Memory of MurderLucas's words hung in the vehicle.

Richard's expression collapsed.

“No.”

Lucas nodded.

“I saw it.”

Evan stared at his son.

“What did you see?”

Lucas closed his eyes.

“Grandma argued with Grandpa.”

“She said he was ruining everything.”

“Then she pushed him.”

Mara began sobbing.

“That means…”

Lucas opened his eyes.

“Dad tried to save him.”

Evan suddenly remembered.

A flash.

A staircase.

His father falling.

Evan reaching.

His mother's hand pulling him back.

Then screaming.

Then darkness.

Not his father.

His mother had erased the memory.

Richard suddenly looked frightened.

“Impossible.”

Lucas turned toward him.

“You knew.”

Richard said nothing.

“You knew she killed him.”

Richard's silence was enough.

Evan grabbed him by the collar.

“You let me believe it was my fault.”

Richard whispered:

“You were easier to control that way.”

Evan almost hit him again.

Mara stopped him.

“Don't.”

Richard laughed.

“You think this ends with revenge?”

Outside, helicopters appeared.

Richard looked up.

“That's your mother.”

Evan followed his gaze.

Three black helicopters.

The older woman stood on a rooftop in the distance.

She had escaped.

The leader of Helix.

Evan looked at Lucas.

“We're going after her.”

Mara nodded.

Nina appeared in the doorway of the vehicle.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“She wants you there.”

“Why?”

“To finish the transfer.”

“What transfer?”

Nina looked at Lucas.

“From you.”

Evan understood.

“They want my memories transferred into Lucas.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you're dying.”

Evan froze.

“What?”

Nina pointed to his hand.

A black vein had begun spreading beneath his skin.

The same mark appeared in Lucas's palm.

“The synchronization started.”

Evan stared.

“How long?”

Nina looked at him.

“Maybe twelve hours.”

Mara cried.

“There has to be a way.”

“There is.”

Evan looked at her.

“What?”

“Destroy the memory system.”

“How?”

“Someone has to enter the White Room.”

Evan nodded.

“Me.”

Nina shook her head.

“Not you.”

“Then who?”

She looked at Lucas.

“Your son.”

Mara stepped backward.

“No.”

“It's the only way.”

“He's ten.”

“Exactly.”

“He's a child.”

“He's also the only person who can access the system without dying.”

Evan looked at Lucas.

The boy was terrified.

But he stepped forward.

“I'll do it.”

“No.”

“Dad.”

Evan knelt.

“You don't have to save me.”

Lucas whispered:

“Yes.”

He touched Evan's face.

“You found me.”

Evan's eyes filled.

“Then let me find you too.”

Nina opened the door to the facility.

“Then we have twelve hours.”

Behind them, the helicopters circled.

The hunt was over.

Now the war had begun.
