Chapter 14 - The Girl Behind the BetrayalClara looked different from the woman on the screen.

She was older.

Scarred.

Her left cheek carried a thin line running from temple to jaw.

But her eyes were unmistakably Whitmore.

Marcus stared.

“Clara.”

She smiled.

“Hi, little brother.”

He almost broke.

He stepped forward.

Thomas raised his weapon.

“One more step and she dies.”

Marcus stopped.

Clara shook her head.

“Don't.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Why did you say you betrayed us?”

“Because I did.”

“How?”

Clara glanced at the microfilm.

“The ledger isn't evidence.”

Marcus frowned.

“What?”

“It is leverage.”

She looked toward Thomas.

“He wants the names.”

Thomas smiled.

“Not the names.”

Clara corrected him.

“The identities.”

Marcus realized.

“People living under new identities.”

Thomas nodded.

“The Black Compass protected them.”

Clara laughed bitterly.

“They imprisoned them.”

Thomas's expression hardened.

“You know nothing.”

“I know enough.”

She looked at Marcus.

“Your grandfather didn't build the system.”

Marcus waited.

“He inherited it.”

David shook his head.

Clara continued:

“He used it to blackmail anyone who threatened him.”

Thomas stepped closer.

“And your sister decided to destroy it.”

Clara nodded.

“I did.”

“Which is why we kept her alive.”

Marcus looked at her.

“You were held all these years.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Clara stared at Thomas.

“Under Hargrove's private facility.”

Marcus's fists tightened.

“Then why are you here?”

Clara smiled.

“Because I escaped.”

Thomas laughed.

“You were released.”

Clara looked at him.

“By your own security team.”

Marcus understood.

Someone inside Hargrove had helped her.

“Who?”

Clara looked at Lily.

Marcus followed her gaze.

Lily was staring at Thomas.

Not afraid.

Watching.

Thomas's face changed.

Clara whispered:

“She recognized him.”

Marcus remembered.

The silver car.

The red room.

The black box.

Lily had seen Thomas before.

Not recently.

Years ago.

“How old was she?”

Rosa looked confused.

“She was barely walking.”

Thomas took a step back.

Clara continued.

“She was there the night I escaped.”

Rosa shook her head.

“No.”

Lily spoke softly.

“Mommy brought me.”

Rosa froze.

“You don't remember.”

Lily nodded.

“I remember.”

Marcus looked at Rosa.

“You took Lily into the facility?”

Rosa started crying.

“I was trying to get Clara out.”

Everything fell silent.

Rosa continued.

“Your mother asked my mother to help. When Clara was moved again, I followed.”

Marcus stared.

“And Lily?”

“I had her with me.”

Rosa pointed toward her daughter.

“She saw everything.”

Thomas suddenly raised his weapon.

Clara moved.

Daniel fired first.

Thomas dropped his gun.

The mansion erupted into chaos.

Marcus pulled Lily behind the staircase.

Rosa and Victoria followed.

Gunfire shattered windows.

Daniel fought two men in the foyer.

David dragged Thomas into the study.

Marcus found the hidden passage.

They ran.

Behind them, Clara shouted:

“Marcus!”

He turned.

Clara held out a small metal key.

“This opens the last room.”

“Where?”

“Your grandfather's basement.”

Marcus stared.

“The mansion has no basement.”

Clara smiled.

“Exactly.”

Then an explosion shook the house.

The ceiling cracked.

Victoria grabbed Marcus.

“We have seconds!”

They ran.

The last hidden door opened beneath the kitchen.

Inside was a vault.

No cameras.

No guards.

Only one chair.

One table.

And one enormous wall of photographs.

Marcus stepped closer.

Every photograph showed someone from the Whitmore family.

His grandfather.

His father.

His mother.

Clara.

Victoria.

Rosa.

Lily.

Then Marcus saw the last photograph.

It was taken that very night.

Three-year-old Lily stood in her pink pajamas.

Beside her was a man Marcus did not recognize.

On the back was written:

SUBJECT ZERO HAS REMEMBERED.

Marcus turned.

“Who is Subject Zero?”

Clara's voice came through the doorway.

“I am.”

Then she looked at Lily.

“No.”

May you like

She corrected herself.

“She is.”
