Chapter 12 - Clara's BetrayalThey escaped the underground facility minutes before it collapsed.

The stone structure disappeared beneath the frozen lake.

Marcus stood on the shore, staring at the ice.

His sister was alive.

She had betrayed the family.

And somehow Lily knew more than anyone.

Rosa wrapped a blanket around her daughter.

Marcus crouched beside her.

“Lily.”

The toddler looked at him.

“What did Clara mean?”

Lily's brow furrowed.

“Which Clara?”

Marcus almost laughed.

“The woman in the screen.”

Lily nodded.

“She says she's sorry.”

Rosa stared.

“She can hear us?”

Lily nodded.

“Sometimes.”

Marcus looked toward the mansion.

“What does she want?”

Lily whispered:

“She wants to come home.”

That sentence stayed with him.

Back inside the estate, Daniel gathered everyone in the study.

The hidden room had been destroyed.

Elliot was missing.

Thomas was gone.

Victoria sat silently by the fireplace.

David looked older than before.

Marcus stood opposite him.

“Tell me everything.”

David nodded.

“Clara was the first person in the family to discover the program.”

“What did she do?”

“She tried to expose it.”

“And failed?”

“She disappeared.”

“Because of Thomas?”

“No.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Then who?”

David looked toward Victoria.

“Your grandfather.”

Marcus's chest tightened.

“My grandfather took her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Clara had the original ledger.”

Marcus stared.

“The ledger was never money.”

“No.”

“What is it?”

David hesitated.

“A record of identities.”

“Whose?”

“Every person ever moved through the Black Compass program.”

Marcus understood.

“If that list gets out…”

“Governments fall. Companies collapse. Families go to prison.”

Victoria spoke quietly.

“And powerful people lose everything.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Why did your family want it?”

“Because Hargrove Security helped manage the program.”

Silence.

David continued.

“But Clara escaped.”

“How?”

“With help.”

“Whose?”

David looked at Rosa.

Everyone turned.

Rosa stood frozen.

“My mother?”

David nodded.

“Your mother helped Clara escape the estate.”

Rosa's eyes filled.

“I never knew.”

“She made Clara promise never to return.”

Marcus stared at Rosa.

“Then why did she come back?”

Rosa looked down at Lily.

“She didn't.”

Marcus frowned.

“What?”

Rosa's voice trembled.

“Maybe she was never gone.”

Lily suddenly stood.

She walked toward the bookshelf.

She touched a small carved symbol.

A bird.

The wall opened.

Behind it was a narrow tunnel.

Marcus stared.

“Where does that go?”

Lily smiled.

“Grandma's room.”

Everyone froze.

Marcus followed.

The tunnel ended beneath the old nursery.

Inside sat a wooden box.

Marcus opened it.

Photographs.

Letters.

And a video recorder.

He pressed play.

His mother appeared.

“Marcus, if you reached this room, then Clara has contacted you.”

She paused.

“There is something you must understand.”

Her face became grave.

“Clara did not betray the family.”

Marcus leaned closer.

“She was the one who exposed them.”

The recording continued.

“But she made one terrible mistake.”

Marcus waited.

“She trusted the wrong person.”

The screen flickered.

A photograph appeared.

Victoria.

Seventeen years old.

Standing beside Clara.

Marcus stared.

Victoria's voice came from behind him.

“I told you.”

Marcus turned.

“You knew Clara.”

Victoria nodded.

“I was there when she disappeared.”

Marcus's eyes hardened.

“Then tell me what happened.”

Victoria whispered:

“She didn't disappear.”

“She was taken.”

“By whom?”

May you like

Victoria looked directly at Marcus.

“By your mother.”
