Chapter 8: The First Confession

Night had fallen over Mexico City.

Inside the old Villaseñor estate, the library glowed beneath the soft light of antique chandeliers. Outside, rain whispered against the tall windows, but no one inside paid it any attention.

Every eye was fixed on Ricardo.

"The receptionist is waiting?" Diego asked.

Ricardo nodded.

"Yes, sir."

"She insisted on coming here herself."

"And she refuses to speak anywhere else."

Elena slowly stood.

"Bring her in."

Ten minutes later...

The library doors opened.

A woman in her early fifties stepped inside.

She looked nothing like the confident receptionist Diego remembered.

Sofía Martínez had aged beyond her years.

Dark circles surrounded tired eyes.

Her shoulders slumped as though she had carried an invisible weight for a very long time.

The moment she saw Diego, tears welled in her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

The words escaped before anyone had asked a question.

Diego remained standing.

"You have one chance."

"Tell me everything."

She nodded.

"I will."

Sofía clasped her trembling hands together.

"Three years ago..."

"A young woman came to the office almost every day."

She looked toward Marisol.

"You."

Marisol lowered her eyes.

"I remember."

"You always carried a blue folder."

"It held ultrasound photographs."

Marisol's breathing caught.

She had never told anyone that.

Sofía continued.

"You waited patiently."

"You never raised your voice."

"You only wanted five minutes with Señor Diego."

Diego's jaw tightened.

"And why didn't I know she was there?"

Sofía closed her eyes.

"Because I was ordered not to tell you."

Silence filled the room.

"Who gave the order?"

She hesitated.

"I received instructions from Human Resources."

"Eduardo Salazar."

Diego's eyes hardened.

"But..."

Sofía continued.

"He wasn't acting alone."

Ricardo immediately began recording the statement.

"Continue."

Sofía nodded.

"The day before Marisol first arrived..."

"Eduardo called me into his office."

"He said a young woman might come asking for Señor Diego."

"I was to tell her he no longer worked there."

"I refused."

"What changed your mind?" Elena asked quietly.

Sofía looked ashamed.

"My son."

Everyone looked at her.

"He needed emergency heart surgery."

"I couldn't afford it."

She swallowed hard.

"Eduardo placed an envelope on the desk."

"Inside..."

"...there were five hundred thousand pesos."

Marisol covered her mouth.

Sofía continued crying.

"He told me it was enough to save my son's life."

"And all I had to do..."

"...was tell one lie."

Diego slowly looked away.

He wasn't angry.

Not yet.

He was trying to understand.

One lie.

One desperate mother.

One family destroyed.

Marisol spoke softly.

"Did you know I was pregnant?"

Sofía nodded through tears.

"I saw the ultrasound."

"I knew."

"Why didn't you tell him anyway?"

"I wanted to."

"I truly wanted to."

She looked toward Diego.

"Three different times I tried entering your office."

"But every appointment was canceled."

"Every message disappeared."

"I realized..."

"...someone above Eduardo was controlling everything."

Diego's voice became colder.

"Who?"

"I never saw the person."

"Only once."

She paused.

"I heard Eduardo say..."

"'Tell Miss Robles everything is under control.'"

The room froze.

Paulina.

Elena slowly turned toward Diego.

"Paulina worked for your father then."

Diego nodded.

"I know."

"But that's impossible."

"She didn't even know me."

Sofía looked up.

"She knew who you were."

"I saw her watching you every day."

"She admired you."

"No."

She corrected herself.

"She was obsessed with you."

Across town...

Paulina stood alone on the balcony of her penthouse.

The city lights shimmered below.

She held another glass of wine she had barely touched.

Her thoughts raced.

If Sofía had spoken...

Everything would unravel.

She whispered to herself,

"She promised she'd stay silent."

A voice answered from behind.

"No."

Paulina spun around.

Standing inside the living room doorway was Eduardo Salazar.

His face was pale.

His suit was soaked from the rain.

"They know."

Paulina stared.

"How much?"

"They found Sofía."

"They know about the money."

Paulina slammed the wine glass onto the table.

"It wasn't my money."

"I know."

"But they'll eventually discover whose it was."

She turned sharply.

"You still haven't destroyed the files?"

Eduardo laughed bitterly.

"I tried."

"They're gone."

"What?"

"Someone removed them before I arrived."

For the first time...

Neither of them knew who possessed the evidence.

Back at the estate...

Diego walked toward the fireplace.

His mind replayed every detail.

Paulina.

Eduardo.

Sofía.

His father's office.

Pieces of a puzzle.

Still incomplete.

He turned.

"Sofía."

"Yes, sir?"

"Did you ever meet the person giving the orders?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"But..."

Everyone leaned forward.

"There was one thing."

"What?"

"Every time Eduardo received instructions..."

"He left his office."

"Went upstairs."

"And entered one room."

"What room?"

Sofía answered without hesitation.

"Your father's private study."

Elena slowly sat back down.

Her face had turned white.

"My husband's study..."

She whispered.

"Only three people had keys."

Diego looked at her.

"You."

"Father."

"And..."

She finished the sentence almost unwillingly.

"...his personal attorney."

The room fell silent again.

Diego frowned.

"Fernando Ortega."

Elena nodded.

"The only man your father trusted with every legal document."

Ricardo immediately opened his tablet.

"Should I bring him in?"

Diego answered instantly.

"No."

Everyone looked surprised.

"No?"

"If Fernando is involved..."

"He already knows we're asking questions."

"And if he knows..."

"He'll start destroying evidence."

Ricardo nodded.

"What do you want me to do?"

Diego's expression became unreadable.

"Watch him."

"Every hour."

"Every move."

"Don't let him know."

Just then, a small sleepy voice drifted in from the hallway.

"Daddy?"

Everyone turned.

Valentina stood in the doorway wearing oversized pajamas Elena had found in storage.

She rubbed her sleepy eyes.

"I had bad dream."

Diego immediately crossed the room and lifted her into his arms.

"What happened?"

She rested her head against his shoulder.

"A scary man."

"What scary man?"

"He said..."

She frowned, trying to remember.

"...don't tell Daddy."

The adults exchanged uneasy glances.

Diego stroked her hair gently.

"It was only a dream."

Valentina slowly shook her head.

"No."

"I know him."

The room became perfectly still.

Marisol felt a chill run through her body.

"When did you see him?"

Valentina answered with innocent certainty.

"The day Mama cried outside the big office."

Every adult in the room stared at the little girl.

Marisol's heart nearly stopped.

Three years ago...

Valentina hadn't even been born.

Yet somehow...

She had just described the day Marisol stood outside Diego's office.

Diego looked at Marisol in confusion.

Marisol whispered,

"...That's impossible."

But Valentina wasn't finished.

She looked directly at the old portrait of Diego's father hanging above the fireplace.

Then quietly pointed at it.

"No..."

She said.

"Not him."

She moved her tiny finger toward another framed photograph sitting on the bookshelf.

A picture of Diego's father standing beside his longtime attorney.

Fernando Ortega.

May you like

Valentina's voice was barely above a whisper.

"That man."
