Chapter 5: The Missing Child

The conference room fell into stunned silence.

For a heartbeat, no one moved.

Then Diego was already on his feet.

"What did you say?"

The security officer swallowed hard.

"Miss Valentina is missing, sir."

The words hit Diego like a freight train.

His chair crashed onto the floor behind him, forgotten.

"When?"

"About fifteen minutes ago."

"How?"

"We don't know."

Diego's voice turned razor sharp.

"Explain."

The guard took a shaky breath.

"Miss Marisol thought Valentina was playing in the east garden with Isabel."

"Isabel believed she was taking a nap in the guest suite."

"When they checked..."

"...she wasn't there."

Diego didn't wait another second.

"Ricardo."

His security chief was already standing.

"Seal every gate."

"Yes, sir."

"No one leaves this estate."

"Not a single vehicle."

"Understood."

Diego turned toward the executives around the table.

"The meeting is over."

He strode from the room without another word.

Behind him, Eduardo Salazar collapsed back into his chair, breathing heavily.

His confession would have to wait.

For now.

Five minutes later, the Villaseñor mansion erupted into controlled chaos.

Security guards spread across the thirty-acre estate.

The main gates slammed shut.

Gardeners.

Housekeepers.

Drivers.

Chefs.

Everyone joined the search.

Ricardo barked orders into his radio.

"Team One, search the western gardens."

"Team Two, check every guest room."

"Team Three, review all camera footage."

"No blind spots."

"No assumptions."

Marisol stood in the foyer, unable to stop trembling.

"This is my fault..."

She whispered the words over and over.

"I should never have left her alone."

Isabel grabbed both of her hands.

"No."

"We'll find her."

Marisol shook her head violently.

"You don't understand."

"She's afraid of strangers."

"What if she's crying?"

"What if she's calling for me?"

Her knees nearly gave out.

Isabel caught her before she fell.

Meanwhile...

Diego entered the mansion's security center.

"Show me every camera."

Twelve monitors lit up simultaneously.

Each displayed a different section of the property.

The technician quickly rewound the recordings.

"There."

One monitor froze.

Valentina skipped happily through the rose garden, her stuffed rabbit bouncing against her tiny shoulder.

Time stamp:

11:42 A.M.

Another camera.

She stopped beside the fountain.

A white butterfly landed briefly on her hand.

She smiled.

Then chased it toward the hedge maze.

Next camera.

She disappeared behind tall bushes.

Time stamp:

11:44 A.M.

Then...

Nothing.

The following camera should have shown her exiting the maze.

Instead...

The screen flickered.

Static.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Fifteen.

The image returned.

Empty path.

No Valentina.

Diego leaned closer.

"Play it again."

The technician did.

Same result.

Static.

Exactly twenty-two seconds.

Ricardo frowned.

"Someone disabled the camera."

"Can we recover the footage?"

"I'm trying."

Outside...

Search dogs arrived.

The animals sniffed Valentina's small pink sweater before racing across the gardens.

One dog suddenly stopped.

Barked.

Then ran toward the servants' parking area.

Ricardo followed.

The dog circled one parking space repeatedly.

Empty.

A vehicle had recently been there.

Fresh tire tracks remained in the gravel.

"When did this car leave?"

A young guard checked his logbook.

"It shouldn't have."

"What?"

"The vehicle belongs to Miss Robles."

Ricardo's expression darkened.

"Where is it now?"

The guard looked confused.

"I..."

He flipped through more pages.

"I never signed it out."

At that exact moment...

Twenty kilometers away...

A black SUV rolled slowly through downtown Mexico City.

Rain tapped softly against the windows.

Inside the back seat, little Valentina sat quietly.

She wasn't crying.

She simply hugged her stuffed rabbit.

Across from her sat an elderly woman with silver hair.

Kind eyes.

Gentle smile.

She offered the little girl a juice box.

"Would you like some apple juice?"

Valentina nodded politely.

"Thank you."

The woman smiled.

"What good manners."

"My mama says always say thank you."

The woman looked away for a moment.

Pain crossed her face.

"You sound just like someone I once knew."

Valentina tilted her head.

"You sad?"

The woman chuckled softly.

"A little."

The child reached into her tiny backpack.

She pulled out a crayon drawing.

"Here."

The woman accepted it.

Three stick figures.

Mama.

Me.

Daddy.

Her smile disappeared.

"Daddy?"

Valentina nodded proudly.

"I found him."

The elderly woman's eyes widened.

"Found him?"

"Uh-huh."

"He hugged me."

She looked out the rain-covered window.

"I like hugs."

The woman quietly closed her eyes.

A single tear escaped.

"So do I."

Back at the mansion...

The technician suddenly shouted.

"Sir!"

Diego rushed over.

"I recovered part of the missing footage."

The distorted video slowly appeared.

Grainy.

Incomplete.

But enough.

Valentina stood beside the hedge.

Someone approached her.

Only the lower half of the person's body appeared on screen.

Elegant cream-colored heels.

A long ivory coat.

The woman crouched.

She spoke briefly.

Valentina smiled.

Then willingly reached out her tiny hand.

The two walked together.

Seconds later...

The camera cut to static.

Diego froze the image.

"Zoom in."

The technician enlarged the frame.

The coat sleeve shifted slightly.

A distinctive gold bracelet became visible.

Diego knew that bracelet.

He had given it as an engagement gift six months earlier.

To Paulina.

The room fell silent.

Ricardo finally spoke.

"Sir..."

Diego didn't answer.

His eyes never left the screen.

"No..."

he whispered.

"She wouldn't..."

But even as he said the words...

A memory surfaced.

Earlier that morning.

Paulina had been unusually calm.

Too calm.

"Where is she now?"

Ricardo checked his tablet.

"No one has seen Miss Robles since breakfast."

Diego's expression hardened.

"Find her."

"Immediately."

Across the city...

The black SUV turned through massive wrought-iron gates.

An elegant colonial estate stood beyond them, hidden among towering trees.

The elderly woman stepped out first.

She offered her hand.

Valentina accepted it without hesitation.

"Big house."

"Yes."

"It used to be full of people."

"Now it's mostly quiet."

The front door opened.

A butler bowed respectfully.

"Welcome home, Señora Elena."

Valentina looked up curiously.

"Your house?"

The elderly woman smiled.

"It was."

She paused.

"And perhaps..."

"...it still is."

Before they entered, the little girl suddenly stopped.

She looked toward the cloudy sky.

"I miss Daddy."

The elderly woman's heart skipped.

She knelt before the child.

"What did you call him?"

"Daddy."

"When did you start calling him that?"

Valentina smiled.

"Today."

The woman's hands began to tremble.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

She reached toward the little girl's face.

Her fingers gently brushed a lock of dark hair away from Valentina's forehead.

There...

Just above the right eyebrow...

A tiny crescent-shaped birthmark.

The same birthmark that had appeared in every generation of the Villaseñor family for more than a hundred years.

The elderly woman's breath caught.

"No..."

she whispered.

"It can't be..."

But deep inside...

She already knew.

Little Valentina wasn't just Diego's daughter.

May you like

She was her granddaughter.

And Señora Elena Villaseñor had just unknowingly brought the missing child into the one place where the truth could no longer stay buried.
