Chapter 8: The Truth Behind Lily’s Birth

The envelope sat on Ethan Caldwell’s desk for almost an hour.

He did not open it again.

He did not need to.

The sentence was already burned into his mind.

“Ask Rosa who Lily’s real father is.”

A single line.

A single doubt.

A weapon designed perfectly.

Because Victoria knew something about human nature.

Trust was not destroyed by a thousand lies.

Sometimes, it was destroyed by one question.

Ethan had faced enemies who attacked his company.

Competitors who spread rumors.

Investors who abandoned him.

People who wanted to see him fail.

But this was different.

This was not about money.

Not about power.

Not about business.

This was about the one person he had just found.

His daughter.

And now someone was trying to make him question that.

He hated that it worked.

Not because he believed the note.

But because he was afraid.

Afraid of losing Lily again.

Rosa found him in the office that evening.

She immediately noticed something was wrong.

Ethan was sitting in darkness.

No laptop.

No phone.

No business documents.

Just silence.

“Ethan?”

He looked up.

For a moment, he looked less like a billionaire.

More like the man she knew years ago.

The man who was scared of losing people.

“What happened?”

He looked away.

“I received something.”

Rosa’s expression changed.

“What?”

He hesitated.

Then placed the paper on the desk.

Rosa read it.

And the second she finished, her face went pale.

Not because of the accusation.

Because she recognized the intention behind it.

“Victoria.”

Ethan watched her carefully.

“You know?”

Rosa nodded slowly.

“She always wanted to make me look like I was hiding something.”

A painful silence followed.

Then Ethan asked the question he had been avoiding.

“Is there something I don’t know?”

Rosa looked at him.

The words hurt.

Not because he asked.

Because she understood why.

“You think I lied?”

“No.”

His answer came quickly.

But then he stopped.

And that pause hurt more than the question.

Rosa looked down.

“There is something you don’t know.”

Ethan’s heart tightened.

“What?”

She took a breath.

“Before Lily was born…”

She struggled to continue.

“There was a complication.”

“What kind?”

“I almost lost her.”

The room became quiet.

Ethan’s expression softened.

Rosa continued.

“I was alone.”

That word stayed between them.

Alone.

A word Ethan hated.

Because he should have been there.

“I was scared.”

She looked at him.

“I didn’t know if she would survive.”

Ethan slowly sat down.

“What happened?”

“The doctors asked for emergency tests.”

“And?”

Rosa hesitated.

“They asked for information about Lily’s father.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why?”

“Because they needed family medical history.”

A terrible thought entered his mind.

“And what did you tell them?”

Rosa looked away.

“I told them her father was unavailable.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Unavailable?”

“I didn’t know what else to say.”

Her voice broke.

“I didn’t know where you were.”

That answer hurt.

Because it was true.

At that moment in their lives…

They were strangers separated by lies.

But Ethan still felt something missing.

“What about the DNA request?”

Rosa looked confused.

“What DNA request?”

He watched her reaction.

And immediately knew.

She truly didn’t know.

“Someone requested a DNA test after Lily was born.”

Rosa looked shocked.

“Who?”

“We’re trying to find out.”

She shook her head.

“I never requested one.”

“I know.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Because I believe you.”

That sentence surprised her.

After everything.

After the doubt.

He believed her.

The next day, Daniel uncovered the missing piece.

He arrived at the mansion with a file.

“I found the original hospital records.”

Ethan immediately stood.

“What did you find?”

Daniel opened the folder.

“The DNA request was not made by Rosa.”

“Then who?”

Daniel placed a document on the table.

“Caldwell Medical Foundation.”

Ethan froze.

“My family’s foundation?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Because someone suspected Rosa was hiding something.”

Ethan stared.

“Who authorized it?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your mother’s former legal advisor.”

Ethan felt confused.

“My mother?”

The mention of his mother changed everything.

Because Ethan’s mother had died years earlier.

She was the one person in his family who had always cared about people before appearances.

“She was not involved.”

Daniel continued.

“But someone used her foundation.”

“Who?”

Daniel placed another paper down.

A signature.

Ethan recognized it immediately.

His expression darkened.

“Richard Haynes.”

Victoria’s father.

Richard Haynes was one of the most influential businessmen in Connecticut.

A man who believed wealth gave people the right to control outcomes.

A man who had always treated Ethan like a valuable investment.

Not a person.

When Ethan first started dating Victoria, Richard had approved.

Not because his daughter was happy.

Because Caldwell and Haynes together created a powerful alliance.

Now Ethan understood.

The manipulation had started long before Victoria entered the mansion.

That evening, Ethan searched through old memories.

His father.

His mother.

The Caldwell family.

The Haynes family.

Everyone had been moving pieces around.

And he had been too focused on surviving to notice.

A thought suddenly appeared.

“What if my mother knew?”

The idea bothered him.

Because his mother loved Rosa.

She had met her several times.

She once told Ethan:

“Some people enter your life quietly, but they leave the biggest footprints.”

At the time, he thought she was talking about business.

Now he wondered.

Was she talking about Rosa?

Ethan went to the old family archive room.

A place nobody entered anymore.

His mother kept journals there.

Not business records.

Personal thoughts.

He spent hours searching.

Until he found one.

A leather notebook.

His mother’s handwriting.

For Ethan.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

The first pages were memories.

Family.

Childhood.

Then he saw Rosa’s name.

His heart stopped.

“Ethan has finally found someone who sees him, not his money.”

He continued reading.

“I worry he will lose her because he thinks love is a weakness.”

Another page.

“Rosa came to me today. She told me she is afraid.”

Ethan stopped.

Afraid.

Why?

He turned the page.

And read the sentence that changed everything.

“She told me she was pregnant. I promised her I would speak to Ethan.”

Ethan’s breathing stopped.

His mother knew.

She knew about Lily.

She knew everything.

But then…

The next pages were missing.

Someone had torn them out.

At that moment, Ethan finally understood.

The secret was not just between Rosa and Victoria.

There were more people involved.

More lies.

More missing pieces.

And someone had gone to great lengths to erase the truth.

Meanwhile, Victoria sat across from her father.

Richard Haynes looked calm.

Too calm.

“You failed.”

Victoria looked angry.

“I’m not finished.”

Richard drank his coffee.

“Ethan knows.”

“He doesn’t know everything.”

Richard smiled.

“That is why you still have a chance.”

Victoria looked at him.

“What chance?”

“To control the story.”

She frowned.

“Ethan is emotional right now.”

Richard leaned back.

“Emotional people make mistakes.”

Victoria looked toward the window.

She remembered Ethan holding Lily’s hand.

The way he smiled.

The way he changed.

She hated it.

Because she realized something.

She had spent years trying to become the most important person in Ethan’s life.

And a little girl had achieved it without trying.

That night, Ethan returned to Lily’s room.

She was sleeping peacefully.

He sat beside her.

Holding the missing pages from his mother’s journal.

For years, he believed he knew his life.

Now he realized he had only known the version people allowed him to see.

He looked at Lily.

“My mother knew you existed.”

The sleeping child did not answer.

But Ethan whispered anyway.

“I’m going to find out what happened.”

He kissed her forehead gently.

“And this time, nobody is taking the truth away from us.”

The next morning, Ethan received another message.

Unknown number.

One photo.

A photograph of Rosa.

Three years ago.

Standing outside Caldwell Industries.

Holding a baby.

And beside her…

Was Ethan’s father’s former lawyer.

The message underneath said:

“Your family knew. They chose silence.”

Ethan stared at the photo.

Because the biggest betrayal was no longer Victoria.

No longer Rebecca.

May you like

It was the possibility that the people he loved had known the truth…

And still let him lose three years with his daughter.
