Chapter 7: The Secret Written on Lily’s Birth Certificate

For the first time in three years, Rosa Martinez woke up without fear.

Not completely.

Fear was something she had carried for so long that it felt like part of her identity.

She feared losing her job.

She feared not being able to provide for Lily.

She feared the day her daughter would ask the question every parent dreaded.

“Where is my daddy?”

But that morning was different.

Because when Rosa opened her eyes, she heard something she never expected to hear.

Laughter.

Not Lily’s laughter.

Ethan’s.

She quietly walked toward the kitchen.

And there he was.

The billionaire who had once appeared untouchable to the entire world was sitting on the floor wearing a ridiculous apron while trying to make pancakes.

Lily stood beside him, holding a small bowl.

“Daddy, you put too much flour.”

Ethan looked at the bowl.

Then at the mess covering the counter.

“Is there such a thing as too much flour?”

“Yes.”

Lily nodded seriously.

“Mama says cooking needs balance.”

Ethan looked toward Rosa.

“She is already judging my cooking skills.”

Rosa smiled.

“She’s right.”

Ethan placed a hand over his heart.

“That hurts.”

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Not like a billionaire’s mansion.

Not like a scandal.

Not like a family destroyed by secrets.

Just a father, a mother, and a little girl making breakfast.

A simple moment.

The kind Ethan had spent years chasing without realizing it.

But peace rarely lasted long.

Especially not in the Caldwell family.

At 10:00 a.m., Ethan received a call.

“Mr. Caldwell.”

The voice belonged to his lawyer, Michael.

“What happened?”

“I need you to come to the office.”

“Why?”

A pause.

That was enough.

Ethan knew something was wrong.

“What is it?”

Michael lowered his voice.

“It concerns Lily.”

Ethan immediately stood.

Rosa noticed.

“What happened?”

“I need to go out.”

Her expression changed.

“Is something wrong?”

Ethan looked at Lily.

Then back at Rosa.

“I don’t know yet.”

And that scared him.

Because Ethan Caldwell was used to knowing.

He controlled information.

He controlled situations.

But when it came to Lily…

Everything important had been hidden from him.

At Caldwell Industries, Michael was waiting with a folder.

Ethan entered the office.

“What did you find?”

Michael placed the folder on the desk.

“This came from Victoria’s lawyer.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Victoria?”

“Yes.”

He opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Hospital papers.

A birth certificate.

Ethan immediately saw Lily’s name.

Lily Grace Martinez.

His eyes moved lower.

Father’s name.

Blank.

His jaw tightened.

“Why is this blank?”

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“That’s not the only thing.”

Ethan turned the page.

A handwritten statement.

Signed by Rosa.

The words made his heart stop.

I confirm that the biological father of my child is unknown.

Ethan stared.

“No.”

Michael remained silent.

“Rosa would never write this.”

“She signed it.”

“No.”

His voice became sharper.

“She wouldn’t.”

Michael sighed.

“Ethan, there is more.”

He placed another document down.

A paternity request.

Rejected.

Three years earlier.

Someone had attempted to request a DNA test.

But the request was canceled.

Ethan looked at the date.

Three years ago.

The same week Lily was born.

“Who canceled it?”

Michael hesitated.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

Ethan looked up.

“Find out.”

“Ethan…”

“Find out.”

His voice was calm.

But Michael understood.

This was not a request.

When Ethan returned home, his mood had changed.

Rosa noticed immediately.

Because she knew him.

Even after three years apart.

She knew when he was carrying something heavy.

“What happened?”

Ethan looked at her.

For a moment, he wanted to say nothing.

He wanted to protect the fragile peace they had just started building.

But he also knew secrets destroyed families.

And he refused to let that happen again.

“Why isn’t my name on Lily’s birth certificate?”

Rosa froze.

The color drained from her face.

Silence.

And Ethan felt something painful.

Because her reaction was not anger.

It was fear.

“Ethan…”

“Answer me.”

His voice was not cruel.

But it was hurt.

“Why?”

Rosa looked toward Lily, who was playing with Button in the living room.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“That if your name was there…”

She stopped.

Ethan waited.

“That someone would take her.”

The words hit him.

“Someone?”

Rosa looked at him.

“Your family.”

Ethan frowned.

“My family?”

“When Lily was born, I didn’t know what would happen.”

Rosa’s voice shook.

“You came from a world where people fought over money, inheritance, power.”

She looked down.

“I was just trying to protect her.”

Ethan was silent.

Because part of him understood.

But another part was wounded.

“You thought I was one of those people?”

Rosa’s eyes filled.

“No.”

She whispered.

“I thought other people would use her to hurt you.”

That answer changed something.

Because Rosa had not been trying to keep Lily away from him.

She had been trying to keep Lily safe.

That night, Ethan sat beside Lily’s bed.

He watched her sleep.

The small girl who changed everything.

The girl who had no idea how many battles were happening because of her existence.

He gently fixed her blanket.

Then he noticed something.

A small envelope under her pillow.

He carefully picked it up.

On the front were childish letters.

For Daddy.

His heart stopped.

He opened it.

Inside was a drawing.

Three people.

A little girl.

A woman.

A man.

They were holding hands.

Above them was a sun.

At the bottom were words written unevenly.

My family.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Because suddenly all the anger disappeared.

All the questions.

All the confusion.

There was only one truth.

Lily wanted him.

Not his money.

Not his name.

Just him.

The next morning, Ethan confronted another mystery.

The canceled DNA request.

Daniel had found the answer.

And it was worse than expected.

“Ethan.”

Daniel looked serious.

“It wasn’t Victoria.”

Ethan looked surprised.

“What?”

“She didn’t cancel the test.”

“Then who?”

Daniel placed the evidence on the table.

A signature.

A name.

Ethan stared.

His face slowly changed.

Because the person who stopped the DNA test…

Was someone he trusted.

Someone who had been protecting him.

Someone who believed they were doing the right thing.

Rebecca Stone.

Rebecca was brought back to the mansion that afternoon.

She looked exhausted.

Different from the confident assistant who once controlled Ethan’s schedule.

“Why?”

Ethan stood across from her.

“Why did you cancel the DNA test?”

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

His voice was quiet.

“But nobody protected me.”

Rebecca looked up.

“I saw what was happening.”

“What?”

“You were destroying yourself.”

Ethan frowned.

“Because of work?”

“Because of Rosa.”

The answer surprised him.

Rebecca continued.

“You loved her.”

Silence.

“But you were afraid.”

Ethan said nothing.

“You were afraid that choosing her meant losing everything your father built.”

Those words struck a hidden place.

Because maybe Rebecca was right.

Maybe three years ago, Ethan had been running from himself.

Rebecca looked at Lily.

“I thought if I removed the problem…”

Her voice cracked.

“Everything would go back to normal.”

Ethan stared at her.

“The problem was never Lily.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t.”

That evening, Victoria watched the news from her apartment.

The world was talking about Ethan.

About the canceled wedding.

About the mystery child.

About Rosa.

But Victoria was not worried.

Because she still had one weapon.

One final truth.

She looked at a sealed envelope on the table.

Inside was a document.

A document that could destroy the family Ethan was trying to build.

She smiled faintly.

“Let’s see how much love survives the truth.”

The next morning, the envelope arrived at the Caldwell mansion.

No sender.

No return address.

Only Ethan’s name.

Inside was a single sentence.

“Ask Rosa who Lily’s real father is.”

Ethan stared at the paper.

His heart stopped.

Because for the first time since discovering Lily…

A terrifying thought entered his mind.

May you like

What if the truth he fought for…

Was not the whole truth?
