Chapter 6 - Mara nearly dropped Noah.“A freezer?”

Daniel's face had gone gray.
“Not like you think.”
Julian stepped between them.
“Explain.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I shouldn't have said that.”
“You're going to explain everything.”
“I can't.”
Julian raised his gun.
“Then start talking.”
Daniel looked at Mara.
“Your baby was declared dead.”
“Yes.”
“He wasn't.”
“I know.”
“He was taken.”
“By whom?”
Daniel hesitated.
“By Victor.”
Julian's father.
Dead for twelve years.
Mara whispered:
“Why?”
“Because Victor believed the Mercer bloodline was too valuable to leave to chance.”
Julian clenched his jaw.
“My father died before Noah was born.”
“His people didn't.”
Daniel walked to the window.
“Victor built a private network. Doctors. lawyers. geneticists. adoption agencies. They moved children between families.”
Julian stared.
“For money?”
“For control.”
Daniel pointed toward Noah.
“Your son has a rare genetic marker associated with an inherited neurological disorder. Victor believed the marker could be used to identify every branch of the Mercer family.”
Mara looked confused.
“So they wanted him for his DNA?”
“Partly.”
Julian frowned.
“What else?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Your son is heir to Mercer Holdings.”
“That doesn't explain any of this.”
“It does when your father believed that whoever controlled the heir controlled the company.”
Julian remembered his father's obsession.
The constant questions about children.
His insistence that Julian marry Evelyn.
His strange interest in family bloodlines.
“What did Evelyn do?”
“She discovered the baby transfer.”
“Then why didn't she tell me?”
“She tried.”
“When?”
“After Noah was born.”
Julian closed his eyes.
He remembered the night Evelyn had disappeared from the hospital room.
She had been frightened.
She had asked him one question.
Do you trust me?
He had said yes.
The next morning she claimed she had been confused from medication.
He had believed her.
Daniel continued.
“She took the baby and gave him to a safe contact.”
Julian stared.
“Then how did he come back to me?”
“Someone betrayed her.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Mara.
“Your blood.”
Mara didn't understand.
Then the house lights went out.
Julian raised the gun.
Daniel whispered:
“They found us.”
A window shattered.
Bullets tore through the kitchen.
Julian dove behind the counter.
Mara dropped to the floor, shielding Noah.
Daniel fired toward the window.
A second shooter came through the back door.
Julian fired.
The man fell.
Another shadow crossed the hallway.
Daniel shouted:
“Basement!”
Julian grabbed Mara.
They ran.
They reached the basement stairs.
Mara slipped.
Julian caught her.
Then Daniel shouted.
A gunshot.
Silence.
Julian turned.
Daniel was on the floor.
Blood spreading across his shirt.
“Go,” he whispered.
Julian wanted to stop.
“Julian…”
Daniel's voice weakened.
“She knows where the records are.”
“Who?”
“Your wife.”
Julian stared.
“Evelyn?”
Daniel nodded.
“She's not trying to kill you.”
Another shot sounded upstairs.
Daniel smiled faintly.
“She wants her son.”
Mara whispered:
“He's not her son.”
Daniel looked at her.
“He was.”
Mara froze.
Julian stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She gave birth to him.”
Everything stopped.
Mara's voice disappeared.
Julian stared.
“That can't be.”
“She was pregnant.”
“You told me she couldn't have children.”
“She couldn't.”
Julian went pale.
“Then how?”
Daniel whispered the final words before losing consciousness.
“Because the baby wasn't hers.”
Mara stared at Noah.
Julian looked at her.
And suddenly he remembered something.
The photograph.
The hospital.
The old name.
Elise.
His wife's original name.
Mara's sister.
And then the impossible truth clicked into place.
Evelyn and Mara were twins.
But only one of them had given birth.
Mara.
The baby belonged to Mara.
Evelyn had raised him.
Then why had Evelyn called him her son?
Julian heard footsteps above.
He pulled Mara into the basement.
They found a hidden room behind a false wall.
Inside were boxes.
Medical records.
Photographs.
Hospital files.
And one envelope.
On it was written:
FOR MARA, WHEN NOAH IS OLD ENOUGH TO ASK WHO HIS MOTHER IS.
Mara's hands trembled.
She opened it.
A single page fell out.
The handwriting was Evelyn's.
The first line read:
Mara, I stole your baby because I was trying to save him.
Mara began sobbing.
Then she turned the page.
At the bottom was a sentence that changed everything.
But I was not the person who ordered the switch.
May you like
Beneath it was a name.
JULIAN MERCER.
