Chapter 15 - The city woke beneath a storm of sirens.News helicopters circled above Mercer Tower.

Federal agents surrounded the hospital.
Victor Mercer was arrested before sunrise.
The server facility was destroyed.
The identities of thirty-one subjects were recovered.
Families who had spent decades believing one thing were suddenly confronted with another.
But Julian barely noticed.
He stood inside the hospital maternity ward.
Mara sat beside him.
Noah slept in her arms.
Adrian sat across from them.
Nobody had spoken for several minutes.
Then Mara asked:
“Where is my daughter?”
Julian looked at Adrian.
Adrian had memorized the final coordinates from Victor's network before the servers went down.
“She was moved to an old Mercer property outside the city.”
“How old?”
“Six years.”
Mara closed her eyes.
Six years.
A child who had existed all this time.
A child she had never known.
A child who might have spent her entire life inside the same nightmare.
Julian stood.
“Then we go.”
Adrian followed.
“We need to be careful.”
“Why?”
“Because Elise took her.”
Mara frowned.
“My sister?”
Adrian nodded.
“She believes the child is hers.”
“But she's not.”
“She doesn't care.”
Julian looked at him.
“What does she want?”
Adrian's expression darkened.
“Something Victor never gave her.”
“What?”
“A real family.”
They reached the old Mercer estate just before dawn.
The gates were open.
No guards.
No cameras.
No cars.
Mara felt uneasy.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, the house was silent.
Then they heard a child's laughter.
Mara froze.
“She’s here.”
They followed the sound upstairs.
A bedroom door stood half-open.
Mara pushed it.
Inside was a little girl sitting on the floor.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A tiny scar above her eyebrow.
She looked up.
And stared directly at Mara.
Mara stopped breathing.
The girl smiled.
“Mom?”
Mara collapsed to her knees.
Tears came instantly.
“My baby.”
The girl stood.
For a moment neither moved.
Then Mara reached for her.
The child ran into her arms.
The hug broke something inside Mara.
She sobbed into the girl's hair.
“I've been looking for you.”
The girl whispered:
“I knew you'd come.”
Mara pulled back.
“How?”
The girl pointed toward the window.
A woman stood outside.
Elise.
Mara's sister.
She was holding a pistol.
Julian stepped in front of Mara.
“Put it down.”
Elise smiled sadly.
“I was never going to hurt her.”
Mara held the girl tighter.
“You stole my daughter.”
“I raised her.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Elise's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Victor?”
“No.”
She looked at Julian.
“Of losing everything.”
Julian stared at her.
“You already lost it.”
Elise shook her head.
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“I was the one who took Noah.”
Mara froze.
Julian's face hardened.
“What?”
Elise looked at Mara.
“When we were in the hospital, I was the one who changed the records.”
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor wanted both babies.”
Mara held Noah tighter.
Elise continued.
“I could only save one.”
Mara's voice broke.
“You saved him for yourself.”
“Yes.”
She looked at the little girl.
“And I saved her.”
Julian stared.
“The third child.”
Elise nodded.
“She wasn't Victor's project.”
Mara looked at her daughter.
“What was she?”
Elise whispered:
“The child Victor was afraid of.”
Julian frowned.
“Why?”
Elise looked at Adrian.
“Because she was conceived naturally.”
Silence.
“No experiments.”
“No genetic modification.”
“No conditioning.”
“She was born outside the system.”
Mara stared.
“So why was Victor looking for her?”
Elise smiled.
“Because she carries the one thing he could never manufacture.”
“What?”
Elise looked at the little girl.
“Free memory.”
Julian didn't understand.
Adrian did.
“She can't be programmed.”
Elise nodded.
“She remembers everything.”
Mara held her daughter.
“But she's six.”
Elise smiled.
“She remembers the day she was born.”
The little girl looked at Mara.
“I remember you.”
Mara began crying again.
“What do you remember?”
The child answered:
“You were crying.”
She looked at Noah.
“And there was another baby.”
Then she looked at Adrian.
“And a man who looked like Daddy.”
Julian felt cold.
The girl pointed toward the hallway.
“He was scared.”
Mara whispered:
“Who?”
The little girl turned.
“Grandfather.”
Victor.
Julian's eyes widened.
“He came for you?”
The girl nodded.
“He said I had something.”
“What?”
She reached into her pocket.
Pulled out a tiny metal key.
Julian stared.
“Where did you get that?”
“From him.”
“From Victor?”
“Yes.”
Mara looked at Elise.
“What does it open?”
Elise's smile disappeared.
“I don't know.”
The little girl corrected her.
“Yes, you do.”
Elise froze.
The child walked toward her.
“You told me never to show this to anyone.”
Elise whispered:
“You weren't supposed to remember that.”
The girl smiled.
“I remember everything.”
Julian took the key.
There was a tiny symbol engraved on it.
A silver crescent.
The same symbol that had appeared on Noah's birth records.
The same symbol etched into Mara's pendant.
Adrian stared at it.
His face went pale.
“That's not a key.”
Julian looked at him.
“Then what is it?”
Adrian whispered:
“It’s a location marker.”
Mara's blood ran cold.
“Where?”
Adrian looked toward the window.
Far beyond the estate, a helicopter rose into the sky.
A red light blinked beneath it.
Victor's voice crackled from a discarded radio on the table.
“You found the children.”
Julian grabbed the radio.
“Where are you?”
Victor laughed.
“Not where you think.”
The signal cut.
Then a final message appeared on Julian's phone.
One image.
A photograph of another laboratory.
Rows of glass chambers.
Inside them were sleeping children.
Dozens.
Maybe hundreds.
And at the bottom of the image was a sentence:
PROJECT MERCER WAS NEVER THE BEGINNING.
Julian stared.
Mara held all three children close.
Adrian looked at the photograph.
The little girl whispered:
“That's where they keep the others.”
Julian turned toward her.
“What others?”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“The children who remember.”
And somewhere far away, a door unlocked with the sound of a single metallic click.
Then another.
May you like
And another.
And another.
