Chapter 7 - The Woman Behind the EmpireMy mother refused to explain.

Not at first.
She sat in the safe house while investigators questioned her.
She remained silent.
Finally, I said:
“Mom, if you don't tell me everything, Grace and I will never be safe.”
She looked at my daughter.
Then she began.
Daniel Cross hadn't built the financial empire.
She had.
My mother.
Elizabeth Hart.
She had been the architect of the international network.
But unlike Daniel, she had built it legally.
She created layered trusts and private corporations to protect families from corporate raids.
Daniel discovered the system and corrupted it.
He transformed it into a criminal machine.
My father tried to stop him.
My mother tried to expose him.
Both failed.
My mother disappeared.
My father stayed behind.
And eventually Richard became involved.
“I thought Richard was Daniel's man,” she said.
“He was.”
“Then why help us?”
“Because he learned Grace was his daughter.”
She explained something even stranger.
Richard had discovered Daniel intended to eliminate his own assets.
Everyone who knew the truth would die.
Including Richard.
He decided to betray Daniel.
But he waited too long.
When I found the financial transfers, Richard realized I had enough evidence to expose everything.
So he accelerated the plan.
He staged my disappearance.
Then he planned to disappear himself.
But Daniel intercepted him.
“Then how did he escape?”
My mother looked toward the door.
“He didn't.”
A voice answered.
“He was released.”
Everyone turned.
The federal investigator entered.
Agent Helen Moore.
She carried a folder.
“We have a problem.”
She placed photographs on the table.
Daniel Cross.
Entering the federal building.
Walking through security.
Passing agents.
No one stopping him.
“How?” I whispered.
“Someone inside the government authorized his access.”
“And Richard?”
“We believe he's still working with him.”
I shook my head.
“He saved us.”
“Or he's manipulating you.”
Then the agent showed me another photograph.
Richard standing beside Daniel.
Taken yesterday.
My heart stopped.
“He said he came alone.”
Agent Moore shook her head.
“He lied.”
Everything I'd learned collapsed again.
Then another photo appeared.
Richard was holding Grace's medical file.
My hands went cold.
“They know where we are.”
The building alarm sounded.
Lights flashed red.
Gunfire erupted downstairs.
Agents rushed into the hallway.
Someone shouted:
“Move!”
Michael grabbed Grace.
My mother grabbed my hand.
We ran through the basement.
Footsteps followed.
A door slammed behind us.
We reached an underground parking garage.
A black SUV waited.
The driver stepped out.
Richard.
I froze.
He looked at me.
“Get in.”
“No.”
“Abigail, please.”
“Why should I trust you?”
“Because Daniel knows where your mother hid the original account.”
I stared.
“Where?”
Richard looked at Grace.
“Inside the baby.”
I frowned.
“What?”
He pointed toward her blanket.
“Your father embedded the final encryption into her birth bracelet.”
I looked at the tiny silver bracelet around Grace's wrist.
My mother gasped.
“No.”
Richard nodded.
“That's why Daniel wants her.”
He reached into his coat.
I raised my weapon.
“Don't.”
He slowly removed a folder.
Inside was a photograph.
My father.
Holding newborn Grace.
And wearing a terrified expression.
On the back was a handwritten message:
THE KEY IS NOT THE CHILD.
THE KEY IS THE PERSON WHO NAMED HER.
I stared at my mother.
She whispered:
“Abigail.”
“What?”
“I named her.”
My mother looked at Grace.
Then at me.
And suddenly Richard whispered:
“Your mother's memory is the password.”

Before anyone could speak, a gunshot cracked through the garage.
Richard collapsed.
