Chapter 1 - The Woman at the AltarThe projector clicked on.

Richard turned toward the screen.
For one brief second, he looked confused.
Then the first image appeared.
A white SUV sat beside a mountain road buried beneath snow.
The chapel went silent.
Someone whispered, âWhat is that?â
Richard did not answer.
His bride, Vanessa, slowly turned toward him.
âRichard?â
He stared at the screen as another image appeared.
A time stamp.
A road marker.
A license plate.
His license plate.
I tightened my arms around Grace.
My daughter slept peacefully against my chest, unaware that the man who had tried to erase her existence was standing only twenty feet away.
Richard's face drained of color.
âNo,â he whispered.
Then the video began.
Snow battered the windshield.
The camera angle was from a trucker's dashboard.
The footage was shaky, but clear enough.
Richard's SUV stopped.
His driver's door opened.
He stepped outside.
Then came the part he had spent six weeks praying would never be seen.
The passenger door opened.
I appeared.
Thirty seconds later, the trucker's camera caught Richard pushing me into the snow.
A collective gasp swept through the chapel.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Richard spun toward the guests.
âThis is fabricated.â
Nobody moved.
âThis woman is mentally unstable,â he continued. âShe's been traumatized. She thinks I'm responsible for some imaginaryââ
âImaginary?â
My voice echoed through the chapel.
Richard looked at me.
I took another step.
âYou told everyone I died.â
His jaw tightened.
âYou told my father I abandoned my family.â
Another step.
âYou told the police my postpartum depression made me disappear.â
The guests were staring.
âAnd you told Vanessa,â I said quietly, âthat your wife and newborn daughter were dead.â
Vanessa turned to him.
âIs that true?â
Richard said nothing.
That silence answered her.
She stepped backward.
âNo.â
I looked at her.
âYou should ask him where he got the money for this wedding.â
Her eyes narrowed.
âWhat money?â
Richard finally found his voice.
âAbigail, stop.â
I almost smiled.
Six weeks ago, that voice would have frightened me.
Tonight, it sounded like a man standing on the edge of a cliff.
âI remember everything, Richard.â
I touched Grace's tiny head.
âI remember the hospital room.â
My voice shook, but I refused to let it break.
âI remember giving birth to her.â
The screen changed.
A hospital record appeared.
Mother: Abigail Carter.
Child: Grace Carter.
Date of birth: six weeks earlier.
Then another document appeared.
A bank transfer.
Three million dollars.
Then another.
Seven hundred and fifty thousand.
Then another.
Five hundred thousand.
All transferred from accounts belonging to my father's company.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
âWhat's that?â
Richard moved toward the projector.
A security guard stepped into his path.
Richard froze.
The chapel doors remained locked.
I had arranged that before entering.
No one was leaving until the truth had finished speaking.
Richard stared at me.
âYou can't do this.â
âYou're right.â
I glanced toward the back of the chapel.
âI didn't.â
A man in a dark suit stepped forward.
My attorney.
Beside him stood a woman wearing a federal investigator's badge.
The guests began murmuring.
Richard's eyes widened.
The investigator walked toward the altar.
âRichard Carter?â
He swallowed.
âYes.â
âMy name is Special Agent Helen Moore.â
His face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
She held up a folder.
âWe need to discuss fraud, identity theft, wire transfers, financial conspiracy, and attempted homicide.â
Vanessa stared at Richard.
âAttempted homicide?â
I saw his shoulders sag.
But then something happened I hadn't expected.
Richard laughed.
Quietly at first.
Then louder.
Everyone stared.
He looked at me.
âYou think you've won?â
I felt my stomach tighten.
âI know what you did.â
âNo.â
He shook his head.
âYou know what I wanted you to see.â
The chapel fell silent again.
Richard looked toward the screen.
Then toward me.
âYou think that trucker saw everything?â
My blood ran cold.
He smiled.
âAbigail, there was another vehicle.â
I stopped breathing.
Richard took one step toward me.
âAnd you never found it.â
For the first time that night, uncertainty entered the room.
Vanessa whispered, âWhat are you talking about?â
Richard looked at her.
Then back at me.
âThe night you disappeared wasn't supposed to happen that way.â
I tightened my hold on Grace.
âWhat does that mean?â
His smile vanished.
âIt means somebody changed the plan.â
My attorney immediately stepped forward.
âDo not speak.â
But Richard was already looking past me.
Toward the projector.
Toward the frozen image of his SUV.
Then he said six words that made my blood turn to ice.
âYour father was supposed to die too.â
The chapel doors unlocked.
May you like
Sirens erupted outside.
And suddenly Richard wasn't the only person in the room who looked afraid.
