Chapter 1 - Claire Bennett had learned a long time ago that rich men did not panic. They simply became quieter.

Adrian Mercer was quiet.

Too quiet.

He stood inside the doorway of the study, one hand around his phone, his expression so cold that Marcus Hale stopped speaking without being told.

The photograph remained on the screen.

Claire.

Lily.

Snow falling around them.

The image had been taken from beyond the Mercer estate gates.

Someone had been close enough to see Lily holding Claire's hand.

Someone had been close enough to know exactly which woman had become important to Adrian Mercer.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“You want the cameras checked?”

“All of them.”

“They've already been checked.”

“Then check them again.”

Marcus watched him for a beat.

“You think it's one of our people?”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“I think whoever sent this photograph wants me to know they can get close.”

“And the message?”

Adrian looked at the three words again.

PRETTY LITTLE FAMILY.

His thumb pressed harder against the phone.

“That wasn't a threat.”

Marcus frowned.

“No?”

“It was a promise.”

Upstairs, Claire knew none of this.

She was in Lily's bedroom, brushing the child's hair while Lily complained about breakfast.

“I don't want eggs.”

“You said that yesterday.”

“I didn't like eggs yesterday.”

“You're very consistent.”

Lily grinned.

Claire smiled despite herself.

For the first time since arriving at the Mercer estate four months ago, the morning felt almost normal.

Then Lily stopped smiling.

Her gaze moved toward the bedroom door.

“Daddy's home.”

Claire turned.

Adrian stood there.

His tie was slightly crooked. His coat was still on. There were dark circles beneath his eyes.

He looked like a man who had not slept at all.

Claire straightened.

“You're back.”

“I never left.”

“You were in the study.”

“Yes.”

Lily ran to him.

Adrian caught her easily.

“Did you eat?”

“No.”

Claire crossed her arms.

“She tried negotiating.”

Adrian looked at Lily.

“Who won?”

“Me.”

Claire raised a brow.

“Apparently.”

Lily giggled.

For several seconds, Adrian looked almost human.

Then his phone vibrated.

His expression changed.

Claire noticed.

So did Lily.

“Daddy?”

“Stay with Claire.”

“But—”

“Now.”

Lily's smile disappeared.

Adrian handed her gently to Claire and walked into the hallway.

Claire followed him with her eyes.

Something was wrong.

She had seen fear before.

Not the ordinary kind.

The kind that made people check windows before closing curtains.

The kind that made them sleep with lights on.

Adrian carried that kind of fear behind his eyes.

“Claire.”

She looked at him.

His voice was low.

“Today, Lily doesn't leave this house.”

Claire blinked.

“What happened?”

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

“That isn't an answer.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You're right.”

He walked back toward her.

“Someone took a photograph of you yesterday.”

Claire's stomach dropped.

“What?”

“Outside the gates.”

She instinctively looked toward the window.

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

“Then why would you tell me?”

“Because I don't want you thinking you're safe just because you're inside.”

Her voice weakened.

“Am I in danger?”

Adrian did not answer immediately.

That was worse than saying yes.

Finally, he said, “Possibly.”

Claire swallowed.

“Because of Lily?”

“Because of me.”

Silence filled the corridor.

Adrian had spent years becoming untouchable.

Now someone had found a way inside his walls.

Through his daughter.

Through Claire.

Lily tugged Claire's cardigan.

“What's happening?”

Claire crouched beside her.

“Nothing, sweetheart.”

Adrian looked away.

Something moved in his expression.

Pain.

Then anger.

His phone rang again.

Marcus.

Adrian answered.

“Talk.”

Marcus's voice came through.

“We found the source.”

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

A pause.

Then Marcus said something that made Adrian go completely still.

Claire saw his face change.

“Adrian?”

He lowered the phone.

“It's impossible.”

“What is?”

He looked at Lily.

Then at Claire.

May you like

And for the first time, Claire saw genuine terror in his eyes.

“The photograph was taken from inside the estate.”
