CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE DOOR

The door handle turned.

Slowly.

Ryan moved in front of Oliver's bed.

Maya grabbed their son's hand.

The emergency lights painted the hospital room in pulsing red.

One second.

Two.

Three.

The door opened.

A woman stood in the hallway.

Dark hair.

Pale face.

Silver pendant.

Ryan stopped breathing.

It was her.

The woman from the photograph.

The woman whose name appeared on Oliver's original birth record.

Claire Whitmore.

Or at least...

the woman who looked exactly like her.

She stared at Ryan through the half-open door.

“Ryan.”

He couldn't speak.

Maya stepped backward.

“Who are you?”

The woman didn't answer.

Her eyes moved toward Oliver.

Ryan immediately blocked her view.

“Don't come any closer.”

She raised both hands.

“I don't want to hurt him.”

“Then tell me who you are.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You have your father's eyes.”

Ryan felt a chill.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Claire.”

Maya whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Claire looked at her.

“I know.”

Ryan's heart pounded.

“My mother said you died.”

Claire's expression changed.

“Your mother?”

“Yes.”

Claire took a slow breath.

“She told you that.”

“She told me you died twenty-two years ago.”

Claire looked down.

“She was right.”

Ryan stared at her.

“What?”

“I died twenty-two years ago.”

Maya looked confused.

“Then who are you?”

The woman looked directly at Ryan.

“I'm Claire's daughter.”

Silence.

Ryan's mind went blank.

“Her daughter?”

“Yes.”

“You look exactly like her.”

“I was told that all my life.”

Ryan stared at the pendant around her neck.

“Then why do you have her necklace?”

The woman touched it.

“Because it was my mother's.”

Ryan's voice dropped.

“What was your name?”

She hesitated.

Then:

“Emma.”

Ryan frowned.

“Emma what?”

“Emma Vale.”

Maya looked at Ryan.

“This doesn't make sense.”

“No,” Ryan whispered.

“It doesn't.”

Emma looked toward the hallway.

“We don't have much time.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“Start talking.”

“I came here because Oliver is in danger.”

“Who is trying to hurt him?”

Emma looked at the hospital room.

Then at Ryan.

“Your father.”

Ryan's jaw tightened.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

“I saw his message.”

“You saw what he wanted you to see.”

“My father is alive.”

“Yes.”

“You know him?”

Emma nodded.

“I knew him.”

Ryan's expression hardened.

“How?”

“He was my mother's husband.”

Ryan froze.

Maya stared.

“What?”

Emma's voice trembled.

“My mother was married to Daniel Whitmore before he disappeared.”

Ryan felt dizzy.

“That means…”

“Yes.”

Emma looked at him.

“I'm your half-sister.”

Ryan couldn't move.

The woman standing in front of him wasn't a stranger.

She was family.

Another secret his mother had kept from him.

Another person connected to his father's disappearance.

Another piece of the nightmare.

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“I wish it weren't true.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Three years ago.”

Ryan froze.

“Three years ago?”

Emma nodded.

“After Oliver was born.”

Maya stepped forward.

“What happened?”

Emma looked at her.

“I found out Daniel had been searching for the child.”

Ryan felt his stomach tighten.

“Which child?”

Emma looked toward Oliver.

“Your son.”

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“Why would my father care about Oliver?”

Emma whispered:

“Because Oliver isn't supposed to exist.”

Maya's face went pale.

“What does that mean?”

Emma looked at Ryan.

“Do you remember the name Noah?”

Ryan's blood ran cold.

“Yes.”

“Noah was the first child.”

“Whose child?”

“Daniel's.”

Ryan stared at her.

“And Claire's.”

Emma nodded.

“He was born twenty-two years ago.”

“The baby in the photograph.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“He disappeared.”

Ryan swallowed.

“Who took him?”

Emma didn't answer.

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

Ryan stepped backward.

“No.”

“She took him from the hospital.”

“You're lying.”

“I saw the records.”

“My mother would never…”

Emma interrupted.

“She didn't take him because she hated him.”

Ryan stared at her.

“She took him because Daniel wanted him dead.”

The room went silent.

Maya looked at Ryan.

Ryan looked at Emma.

“Why?”

“Because Noah had a genetic condition.”

“What condition?”

Emma shook her head.

“I don't know the medical name.”

“Then what?”

“He had something Daniel believed would destroy his family.”

Ryan's brow furrowed.

“That makes no sense.”

Emma reached into her coat.

Ryan immediately tensed.

“Don't.”

She stopped.

Slowly, she pulled out a small photograph.

She handed it to him.

Ryan looked down.

It showed a little boy.

Maybe six years old.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

He was sitting beside an older man.

Daniel.

Ryan stared.

“That's Noah.”

“Yes.”

“When was this taken?”

“Three years ago.”

Ryan's breath caught.

“That can't be.”

Emma nodded.

“Noah survived.”

Ryan stared at the photograph.

“Where is he?”

Emma looked toward the hallway.

“That's why I'm here.”

Ryan's voice dropped.

“Where is my brother?”

“He's inside this hospital.”

Ryan's heart slammed against his ribs.

“What?”

Emma whispered:

“He's the one who sent you the messages.”

Ryan looked at his phone.

Unknown number.

His father's videos.

Warnings.

Photographs.

Noah had been watching them.

All along.

Maya suddenly gasped.

“Ryan.”

He turned.

Oliver's oxygen monitor was beeping.

Rapidly.

His son was struggling again.

Ryan rushed to the bed.

“Get the doctor!”

Maya ran into the hallway.

Emma stayed frozen near the door.

Ryan looked at her.

“Help me!”

She moved toward Oliver.

Then stopped.

Her eyes widened.

“Ryan.”

“What?”

“Look at the monitor.”

Ryan did.

The numbers were dropping.

Fast.

“What happened?”

Emma looked terrified.

“He's been poisoned.”

Ryan stared at her.

“What?”

“Someone gave him something.”

“No.”

“Look at his pupils.”

Ryan looked.

Oliver's eyes were barely opening.

Ryan screamed:

“DOCTOR!”

Footsteps thundered down the hallway.

Nurses rushed inside.

Emma stepped backward.

Ryan looked at her.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“Then why didn't you say something?”

“Because I thought I was too late.”

The medical team pushed Ryan away.

“Sir, step back.”

Ryan grabbed Maya.

“What's happening?”

“I don't know.”

“Will he be okay?”

“We're treating him.”

Ryan watched helplessly as the doctors worked.

Then he noticed Emma standing near the door.

She was staring at something behind him.

Ryan followed her gaze.

A small security monitor displayed the hospital corridor.

There was a man standing at the end of the hallway.

Tall.

Dark coat.

Gray hair.

Ryan's heart stopped.

Daniel.

His father.

Alive.

Standing inside the hospital.

Watching them.

Ryan turned toward the corridor.

“Dad?”

Daniel looked directly at him.

Then he raised one hand.

He wasn't holding a weapon.

He was holding a photograph.

He pressed it against the glass.

Ryan couldn't see the image clearly.

Daniel mouthed four words.

ASK YOUR MOTHER ABOUT NOAH.

Then he turned and disappeared around the corner.

Ryan ran after him.

“Dad!”

The corridor was empty.

No footsteps.

No elevator sound.

Nothing.

But on the floor was the photograph.

Ryan picked it up.

His hands began shaking.

It showed three children.

Noah.

Emma.

And...

Ryan.

All standing together.

Ryan stared at his younger self.

He had never seen this photograph before.

On the back was a date.

August 11, 2006.

Ryan's birthday.

But there was something impossible.

He was only a newborn.

And beside the photograph was a handwritten sentence:

ONE OF THESE CHILDREN WAS REPLACED.

Ryan looked toward Oliver's room.

Then toward Emma.

His voice barely escaped.

“Which one?”

Emma's face went white.

She whispered:

“Ryan…”

“What?”

“The child who was replaced…”

She looked at Oliver.

“…wasn't Oliver.”

Ryan's blood froze.

May you like

Emma continued:

“It was you.”
