CHAPTER 11 — THE WOMAN IN THE BACK SEAT

Ryan stared at the photograph until his vision blurred.

Oliver was alive.

That was the only thing that mattered.

For the moment.

His little boy was sitting in the back seat of a black SUV, still wearing the hospital bracelet around his wrist.

Beside him sat a woman.

Dark hair.

Gray coat.

Silver pendant.

Her face was unfamiliar.

But there was something about her expression that terrified Ryan.

She wasn't threatening Oliver.

She was smiling at him.

As though she had been waiting years to meet him.

Ryan looked at Michael.

“Who is she?”

Michael stared at the photograph.

“I don't know.”

“You said you knew everything.”

“I said I knew the organization.”

Ryan grabbed his jacket.

“Then start knowing faster.”

Daniel moved toward the window.

“We can't stay here.”

Ryan turned.

“My son was kidnapped.”

“I know.”

“Then help me find him.”

Daniel nodded.

“I will.”

Ryan looked at Michael.

“And you?”

Michael's face hardened.

“I've been trying to protect you for twenty-two years.”

Ryan stopped.

“What?”

Michael looked at him.

“You weren't the only child Daniel was watching.”

Ryan frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Michael pulled a small notebook from his coat.

He opened it.

Inside were dozens of names.

Doctors.

Nurses.

Lawyers.

Police officers.

Politicians.

Hospital administrators.

Ryan stared.

“These are all connected to the Whitmore Foundation?”

Michael nodded.

“Some directly.”

“And the others?”

“People who were paid.”

“To do what?”

Michael looked at him.

“To make sure you stayed Ryan Whitmore.”

Ryan felt a chill.

“Why would anyone care what name I had?”

Michael hesitated.

“Because your original identity is dangerous.”

“What was it?”

Michael looked away.

“I don't know.”

Ryan grabbed his shoulder.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I've spent twenty-two years trying to find out.”

“Then what do you know?”

Michael took a breath.

“You weren't born Ryan.”

Ryan's face tightened.

“I know that.”

“No.”

Michael shook his head.

“You're thinking about the records.”

“Yes.”

“The records were changed.”

“I know.”

“But that's not the real secret.”

Ryan stared at him.

“What is?”

Michael looked toward Daniel.

Daniel slowly nodded.

Michael whispered:

“You were born under the name Noah.”

Ryan froze.

“No.”

Michael nodded.

“Your original birth name was Noah Daniel Whitmore.”

Ryan's mind went blank.

“Noah was my brother.”

“No.”

Michael stepped closer.

“Noah was you.”

Ryan shook his head violently.

“Then who was the boy in the photographs?”

Michael looked at him.

“A decoy.”

Ryan couldn't breathe.

“What?”

“Daniel created two identities.”

Michael pointed toward the old photographs.

“One for the child he wanted everyone to believe existed.”

He pointed at Ryan.

“And one for the child he actually experimented on.”

Ryan stared at Daniel.

His father didn't deny it.

Ryan's voice became barely audible.

“You made me disappear.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I tried to save you.”

“You stole my identity.”

“I gave you a life.”

“You gave me a lie.”

Daniel looked at his son.

“If you had grown up as Noah, they would have found you.”

“Who?”

“The Foundation.”

Ryan's phone vibrated.

Another photograph.

Oliver.

The woman.

The black SUV.

But this time the photo showed the vehicle driving toward a familiar building.

Ryan zoomed in.

His heart stopped.

The building was the old Whitmore hospital.

The same hospital where Noah had supposedly been born.

The same hospital where his father had supposedly died.

The same hospital connected to his altered records.

Ryan looked at Daniel.

“They took Oliver there.”

Daniel nodded.

“They want something.”

“What?”

“The original research.”

Ryan frowned.

“What research?”

Daniel looked at Michael.

Michael answered.

“Your DNA.”

Ryan's stomach dropped.

“They're going to test Oliver.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because they need to know whether he inherited what you have.”

Ryan stared.

“What do I have?”

Michael shook his head.

“We don't know.”

“Then find out.”

“We've been trying.”

Ryan stepped toward the door.

“Let's go.”

Daniel stopped him.

“You can't just walk into that hospital.”

“Watch me.”

“They'll be waiting.”

“I don't care.”

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“If you go in there blindly, you'll never get Oliver back.”

Ryan stared at his father.

“Then what's the plan?”

Daniel looked at the key.

“That key doesn't open a door.”

Ryan frowned.

“What?”

“It opens a vault.”

Ryan looked at the tiny metal key.

“Where?”

“Under the old hospital.”

Ryan's heart pounded.

“What is inside?”

“The original research.”

“And?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Your mother's confession.”

Ryan froze.

“My mother?”

“She recorded everything.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew one day the Foundation would come for Oliver.”

Ryan stared at him.

“Then why did she attack Maya?”

Daniel's expression changed.

“She didn't.”

Ryan's eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“She never attacked Maya.”

“But I saw the blood.”

“The blood was staged.”

Ryan felt his stomach twist.

“By who?”

Daniel looked toward Michael.

Michael's face hardened.

“By the Foundation.”

Ryan remembered the nursery.

The shattered lamp.

The scattered medicine.

Maya holding Oliver.

Evelyn standing behind them.

Everything suddenly looked different.

His mother hadn't destroyed the nursery.

Someone had made it look like she did.

The inhaler had been planted.

The documents had been planted.

The camera had been planted.

Even the blood could have been staged.

Ryan suddenly understood why Evelyn had looked terrified.

She hadn't been trying to frame Maya.

She had been trying to stop the people framing her.

But there was still one question.

“Then why did Evelyn have the custody documents?”

Daniel looked down.

“Because she knew the Foundation would use them.”

“To do what?”

“To take Oliver legally.”

Ryan's jaw tightened.

“So my mother was trying to protect him.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't she tell me?”

Daniel's face darkened.

“Because she didn't know who was listening.”

Ryan remembered the hidden camera.

His mother had been right.

They had been watched.

Possibly for years.

Michael suddenly looked toward the window.

“We have to leave.”

Ryan grabbed the file.

“Now.”

They ran downstairs.

The front door opened.

Three black SUVs were parked outside.

Men in dark clothing surrounded the house.

Ryan stopped.

Daniel raised his weapon.

Michael whispered:

“They're Foundation security.”

Ryan looked at the road.

“We're trapped.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed toward the basement.

“There is another way out.”

Ryan followed him.

They rushed downstairs.

Dust filled the air.

Daniel moved an old cabinet aside.

Behind it was a narrow metal door.

He inserted a key.

The door opened.

A tunnel stretched beneath the house.

Ryan stared.

“How long has this been here?”

“Twenty-two years.”

Michael looked at him.

“It was built the night you disappeared.”

Ryan felt cold.

“Where does it lead?”

Daniel answered:

“The hospital.”

They entered.

Behind them came the sound of the front door being kicked open.

Men shouted upstairs.

Ryan ran.

The tunnel was dark.

Only emergency lights flickered along the walls.

After several minutes, they reached another metal door.

Daniel stopped.

“This is it.”

Ryan looked at him.

“What's inside?”

Daniel whispered:

“Everything.”

He opened the door.

Beyond it was a hidden underground laboratory.

Old computers.

Medical equipment.

Rows of files.

Photographs.

And in the center of the room stood a glass chamber.

Inside was a single hospital bassinet.

Ryan walked toward it.

A label was attached.

SUBJECT NOAH — AUGUST 11, 2006.

Ryan's heart stopped.

His birth date.

He touched the glass.

Then he noticed something beneath the label.

A second name.

TRANSFERRED TO SUBJECT RYAN — 03:17 A.M.

Ryan turned.

“Dad.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What happened at 3:17?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Michael walked toward a computer.

“There's a recording.”

He pressed play.

Static.

Then Evelyn's voice filled the room.

Her voice was young.

Terrified.

“Daniel, please. He's our son.”

A man's voice answered.

“No. He's the subject.”

Evelyn began crying.

“If you do this, I'll take him.”

“You can't.”

“I will.”

“You'll destroy everything.”

“I don't care.”

The recording ended.

Ryan stared at Daniel.

“You experimented on me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I stopped them.”

“Then why was I in this room?”

“Because I had no choice.”

Ryan's eyes filled with anger.

“You always have a choice.”

Daniel looked broken.

“I chose to keep you alive.”

Then a computer beeped.

Michael looked at the screen.

His face suddenly went white.

“Ryan.”

“What?”

“They're here.”

“Who?”

Michael pointed to a live security feed.

Oliver was being wheeled through a corridor.

The mysterious woman was beside him.

And behind them stood Evelyn.

Alive.

But her hands were tied.

Ryan stepped toward the screen.

“Mom.”

Evelyn looked directly at the camera.

Then she mouthed something.

Ryan leaned closer.

“What is she saying?”

Michael increased the volume.

Evelyn's voice came through the speaker.

“Ryan…”

She looked terrified.

“Don't come for me.”

Ryan froze.

Evelyn continued:

“Save Oliver.”

Then she turned toward someone outside the camera's view.

Her expression changed.

She wasn't afraid anymore.

She looked angry.

And then she said something that made Ryan's blood freeze.

“Tell him.”

A man's voice answered.

“Tell him what?”

Evelyn looked directly at the camera.

“Tell Ryan the woman beside Oliver is his real mother.”

Ryan's heart stopped.

Michael stared at the screen.

Daniel whispered:

“No…”

Ryan turned toward him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Ryan grabbed his father by the collar.

“WHO IS OLIVER'S REAL MOTHER?”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

Then the laboratory lights suddenly turned red.

An alarm began screaming.

The computer displayed one message:

DNA MATCH CONFIRMED.

Beneath it:

OLIVER WHITMORE — 99.98% MATCH TO SUBJECT NOAH.

Ryan stared at the screen.

Michael slowly whispered:

“That's impossible.”

Daniel looked at his son.

“No.”

Ryan's voice shook.

“Then what is it?”

Daniel answered:

“Your son isn't carrying your genes.”

Ryan stared.

“Whose are they?”

Daniel looked toward the live camera.

At the woman beside Oliver.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“Claire's.”
