Chapter 6 - Sarah's SecretDaniel didn't run.

He simply stood beside the black car.
Waiting.
I walked outside.
My team watched from concealed positions, but Daniel knew exactly where they were.
"You're getting slow," he called.
I kept walking.
"You're supposed to be dead."
"So are you."
"I never died."
"Neither did I."
We stood fifteen feet apart.
Twelve years disappeared between us.
I stared at his face.
"Where is Sophia?"
"At the hospital."
"Sarah?"
"Not your real enemy."
"Then tell me who is."
Daniel looked toward my house.
"Your wife knew."
My chest tightened.
"My wife?"
"She knew what Black Harbor was doing."
I shook my head.
"No."
"She found financial transfers."
"You're lying."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Your wife didn't die because of an accident."
Everything inside me went still.
I remembered the night.
The rain.
The phone call.
The twisted guardrail.
The paramedics.
The funeral.
The years of grief.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying your wife's death was connected to the leak."
My voice dropped.
"Who ordered it?"
Daniel looked at me.
"You did."
I almost hit him.
"What?"
"You signed the protection request that put her in the wrong place."
My fist tightened.
"Stop."
"I followed the chain."
He took a breath.
"You trusted the wrong person."
I stared at him.
"Who?"
Daniel pointed toward my house.
"Sarah."
I shook my head.
"No."
"She wasn't working for them initially."
"Then why?"
"Because they threatened Lucas."
My anger faltered.
Daniel continued.
"Sarah borrowed money. Too much. Then someone offered to erase it."
"North Vale."
He nodded.
"They made her install the cameras."
"She gave them access to my house."
"Yes."
"Did she hurt Sophia?"
Daniel's expression changed.
"No."
"She lied to us."
"Yes."
"She locked Sophia outside."
"I know."
"She poured ice water over her."
Daniel looked away.
"Because she was frightened."
"Frightened?"
"They threatened Lucas."
I laughed bitterly.
"So she sacrificed my daughter?"
Daniel didn't answer.
I turned away.
Then my phone rang.
Hospital.
I answered.
"Mr. Reed?"
The nurse sounded frantic.
"Sophia is missing."
Everything inside me froze.
"What?"
"She was in the room five minutes ago."
"How?"
"We don't know."
I heard shouting in the background.
My voice became dangerously calm.
"Lock the hospital down."
"We're trying."
I looked at Daniel.
He was already walking toward the car.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm going to get her."
"You're helping me?"
Daniel stopped.
"I never stopped."
He opened the passenger door.
"Get in."
I hesitated.
The man I had buried was standing beside me.
The man I once trusted more than myself.
And my daughter was missing.
I got in.
The car accelerated into the night.
Daniel looked at me.
"You should know one thing."
"What?"
"Black Harbor is no longer a network."
"What is it now?"
Daniel's eyes stayed on the road.
"A government inside the government."
My phone buzzed.
A photo appeared.
Sophia asleep in someone's arms.
May you like
Underneath it was one message.
