Chapter 4 - The Box Beneath the FloorI returned home after midnight.

The house was empty.
Sarah and Lucas were gone.
That bothered me more than it should have.
Not because I cared where Sarah went.
Because I hadn't ordered anyone to let her leave.
I entered my study.
Locked the door.
Pulled the old rug aside.
There was a seam in the floor.
I pressed my thumb against a hidden latch.
Nothing happened.
I entered a second sequence.
A panel opened.
Underneath was a steel box.
I stared at it.
Twelve years.
I had spent twelve years pretending it didn't exist.
Inside were photographs, reports, handwritten notes, and one encrypted drive.
I lifted the drive.
My hands shook.
The file label was faded.
BLACK HARBOR.
I hadn't heard the name in years.
Black Harbor wasn't an operation.
It was a network.
A group operating through contractors, shell companies, financial intermediaries, and intelligence brokers.
We had spent eighteen months dismantling it.
Then someone inside our own chain of command leaked our identities.
Six agents disappeared.
Two were killed.
Daniel Mercer vanished.
And I retired.
At least officially.
I inserted the drive into an old offline terminal.
The screen flickered.
A single file appeared.
MERCER, DANIEL. STATUS: DECEASED.
Then a second file.
REED, MICHAEL. STATUS: ACTIVE.
I stared.
"Impossible."
The status changed.
LAST CONFIRMED ACTIVITY: 6 WEEKS AGO.
Six weeks.
The same period when the cameras appeared.
The same period when Sophia's behavior changed.
I opened a third file.
A bank transaction.
Repeated payments.
Thousands of dollars.
To a company called North Vale Consulting.
The account receiving the money belonged to...
Sarah.
I stared at the screen.
No.
There had to be an explanation.
I checked again.
Same name.
Same account.
Same routing information.
My phone vibrated.
A message.
WE HAVE A PROBLEM.
I called immediately.
"What?"
"One of the team found a second financial trail."
"Where?"
"Chicago."
Claire.
My daughter had told me Aunt Claire's trip to Chicago was a gift.
A gift I had secretly paid for.
I had assumed the expense was innocent.
Now I wasn't sure.
"Send me the records."
Seconds later, documents arrived.
Hotel bookings.
Transportation.
Meetings.
A photograph.
Sarah standing beside a man in a black coat.
I zoomed in.
I recognized him.
Daniel Mercer.
Older.
Thinner.
Alive.
My hand tightened around the phone.
Then I noticed something else.
Sarah wasn't looking at Daniel.
She was looking at the camera.
Which meant she knew she was being photographed.
And she had wanted me to find it.
The secure phone rang.
I answered.
Daniel's voice came through.
"Hello, Michael."
I said nothing.
"Still wearing that ridiculous hoodie?"
My blood ran cold.
He remembered.
Daniel laughed softly.
"I knew you'd eventually come looking."
"Where is my daughter?"
A pause.
"Safe."
I closed my eyes.
"If you touch Sophia..."
"Michael."
His voice became serious.
"I don't want your daughter."
"Then what do you want?"
"The box."
"You've had twelve years."
"No."
He paused.
"I had ten."
The line clicked.
I stared at the phone.
May you like
Then I heard the sound of my front door opening.
Someone was inside.
