Chapter 8 - Martin Avery's OfferWhen the emergency lights came on, Martin was gone.

Only the basement door remained open.
We ran upstairs.
Nothing.
No footsteps.
No car outside.
No sign anyone had been there.
Except the envelope on the kitchen counter.
My name was written across it.
Inside was a photograph of my mother.
She was standing outside our old apartment.
Beside her stood Martin Avery.
On the back:
SHE ASKED ME TO PROTECT YOU.
I stared.
Lauren came closer.
“What?”
I turned the photograph over.
Her face went pale.
“My father trusted Martin.”
“So did mine,” Marcus said.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus took a breath.
“Martin was the man everyone went to when they wanted problems disappear.”
I looked at Ethan.
“Your father?”
Marcus nodded.
“Your father too,” he told Lauren.
We drove to Martin's office.
He had left a message on the company's public line.
“Come alone.”
I almost refused.
Then I heard the rest.
“You want the truth about your mother.”
I went.
Ethan insisted on waiting outside.
Martin's office occupied the top floor of a glass tower.
He sat behind a desk as if nothing had happened.
“You're very persistent.”
“So was my mother.”
“She learned from you.”
I sat across from him.
“Did you know my mother?”
“Yes.”
“Did you hurt her?”
“No.”
“Did you threaten her?”
“No.”
“Did my mother trust you?”
Martin smiled.
“More than she trusted Richard Bennett.”
That sentence landed hard.
“What happened between them?”
“She discovered that the Bennett family wasn't stealing the money.”
I frowned.
“Then who was?”
“The same people who are stealing yours.”
“My restaurant?”
“Your identity.”
I stared.
Martin opened a file.
Inside were copies of documents dated fifteen years ago.
My name appeared repeatedly.
MAYA PIERCE.
On paper, I had owned companies I had never heard of.
I had signed loans.
Opened accounts.
Closed accounts.
Transferred millions.
None of it was real.
Someone had built an entire financial identity around me.
“Why?”
“To move money without attracting attention.”
“Why use my name?”
“Because nobody important cared about the daughter of a hotel cleaner.”
My jaw tightened.
Martin continued.
“That was your protection.”
“Protection?”
“People underestimated you.”
He leaned back.
“Until you became successful.”
I stared at him.
“And then?”
“The moment you became visible, the identity became dangerous.”
“For whom?”
“For the people who created it.”
I looked at the documents.
“Lauren?”
Martin shook his head.
“She is guilty of many things.”
“Such as?”
“Cowardice.”
He paused.
“Pride.”
Another pause.
“And helping her father.”
Lauren's betrayal hurt less now.
My question became:
“Who is the real mastermind?”
Martin looked toward the window.
“Daniel.”
I froze.
“No.”
“He survived.”
“I know.”
“He spent seventeen years collecting evidence.”
“Why attack Lauren?”
“She betrayed him.”
“How?”
“She told her father where he was hiding.”
I stared.
“That cannot be true.”
Martin opened another file.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Lauren's handwriting.
Dad, Daniel contacted me again.
I know where he is.
I looked at Martin.
“When was this written?”
“Three weeks after graduation.”
I felt sick.
“Did she give him to her father?”
“Yes.”
“Then why is she afraid of Daniel?”
“Because she knows what he became afterward.”
“What did he become?”
Martin's eyes hardened.
“The kind of man who doesn't forgive.”
A knock came from the hallway.
Martin looked up.
“Too late.”
The door opened.
Lauren stood there.
She was holding a gun.
Ethan was behind her.
“Put it down,” he said.
Lauren looked at Martin.
Then at me.
“I never betrayed Daniel.”
Martin smiled.
“She'll say anything now.”
Lauren's eyes filled with tears.
“He's lying.”
“Then prove it.”
She lowered the weapon.
“I can.”
“How?”
She reached into her coat.
Pulled out a small USB drive.
“This contains everything.”
Martin's face changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Lauren placed the drive on the desk.
“The original ledger.”
Martin stood.
“You don't know what you're doing.”
Lauren looked straight at him.
“Yes.”
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“I didn't bring the ledger to Maya.”
May you like
She looked at me.
“I brought Maya to the ledger.”
