Chapter 13 - The Betrayal At My Own TableClaire disappeared before we reached the restaurant.

Her office was empty.

Computer gone.

Files gone.

Phone disconnected.

Security footage showed her leaving at 4:17 p.m.

But she had left something behind.

A handwritten note inside my desk.

You should have stayed the waitress.

I read it twice.

Then something inside me clicked.

Lauren had spent seventeen years underestimating me.

Claire had done the same.

Martin had done it too.

They thought my greatest weakness was the life I had come from.

They were wrong.

That life had taught me how to survive.

Marcus entered the office.

“We found another problem.”

“What?”

“There are transfers from the Henderson account.”

Ethan's account.

My stomach dropped.

“How much?”

“All of it.”

The account had been drained.

Millions.

The transfers had been authorized in my name.

Martin had acted.

He wanted Ethan blamed.

And me.

At the same moment, financial regulators arrived at the restaurant.

They carried documents.

One officer looked at me.

“Maya Pierce?”

“Yes.”

“We need to speak with you.”

I looked at the paperwork.

Fraud.

Money laundering.

Unauthorized transfers.

Identity misuse.

Everything had been arranged.

Someone had built a case against me.

And it was almost perfect.

Almost.

Because the signature on one document contained a tiny detail.

My real signature always crossed the final letter twice.

This one didn't.

I pointed at it.

“That isn't my signature.”

The investigator looked at me.

“We have dozens of transactions.”

“All forged.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

I opened my phone.

The restaurant had a camera in the office.

Continuous recording.

I showed them the footage.

Claire entering.

Claire opening my desk.

Claire photographing documents.

Claire copying my signature.

Then the room went quiet.

The investigator looked at Ethan.

“You need to preserve all digital records.”

“We will,” he said.

Another officer entered.

“We found the vehicle.”

Claire's car had been located outside an old warehouse.

We went there.

Inside, hundreds of files were stacked across a concrete floor.

Boxes.

Hard drives.

Old photos.

And one wall covered in names.

My name was in the center.

Lauren's beneath it.

Ethan's beside it.

Richard.

My father.

Anna.

Daniel.

Everyone.

But there was a final name.

The name at the top.

MARTIN AVERY

We searched the warehouse.

No Martin.

But we found Claire.

She was sitting in a chair.

Alive.

Terrified.

“You don't understand,” she said.

“Who forced you?”

“Martin.”

“Where is he?”

“I don't know.”

“What does he want?”

She stared at me.

“Your restaurant.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because the basement isn't just where the ledger was hidden.”

She swallowed.

“It's connected to something underneath the entire block.”

“What?”

“A vault.”

My blood ran cold.

“A vault?”

“Martin believes the final account is there.”

“What account?”

Claire looked at Ethan.

“The Bennett Family Trust.”

Then she looked at me.

“Your mother's proof is inside.”

“Why does Martin want it?”

“Because it contains the names of everyone who received the money.”

“And if he gets it?”

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“He destroys the ledger.”

A crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

The warehouse lights went out.

Gunfire echoed from somewhere in the distance.

People screamed.

I grabbed Ethan's hand.

Then I saw someone walking through the darkness.

Lauren.

She held a flashlight.

And behind her stood a woman I hadn't seen in seventeen years.

Anna.

Alive.

She looked at me.

May you like

Then said:

“Maya, your mother didn't die naturally.”
