Chapter 13: The Legacy Protocol

The last rays of sunlight stretched across the Aurelius Valley.
Above, the four helicopters continued circling like silent predators.
Below, no one was building barricades.
No one was digging trenches.
Instead, every villager carried books.
Wooden crates.
Metal cylinders.
Ancient scrolls wrapped in oilcloth.
Marcus watched through binoculars from the lead helicopter.
He frowned.
"What are they doing?"
His communications officer answered,
"No defensive activity detected."
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
"That's what worries me."
Inside the Aurelius Library...
William led Richard, Victor, Sofia, James, Isabella, and several village elders into a chamber beneath the main archive.
Unlike the grand halls above, this room was surprisingly simple.
At its center stood a circular stone table.
Eight chairs surrounded it.
The same eight-star symbol was carved into the floor.
William placed his hand on the table.
"My grandfather called this..."
"...the Legacy Chamber."
Richard looked around.
"So this is where the leaders met."
William nodded.
"For over six hundred years."
Victor frowned.
"I thought Aurelius was an ancient civilization."
"It wasn't."
William smiled.
"It was an idea."
Everyone looked at him.
"Aurelius wasn't founded by one nation."
"It was founded by people."
"Scientists."
"Doctors."
"Engineers."
"Teachers."
"Farmers."
"Explorers."
"Whenever war threatened knowledge..."
"...someone carried it here."
Sofia added quietly,
"The library never belonged to one culture."
"It belonged to humanity."
James unfolded a tactical map.
"Our problem is simple."
He pointed toward the surrounding mountains.
"We're surrounded."
"Limited ammunition."
"No reinforcements."
Richard nodded.
"I know."
William smiled.
"Good."
James blinked.
"Good?"
William looked toward the shelves.
"Because we were never meant to win a battle."
"We were meant to survive history."
Victor crossed his arms.
"So what's your plan?"
William walked toward an old bronze cabinet.
From inside, he removed a small wooden box.
No jewels.
No gold.
Only eight metal keys.
Each was engraved with the same eight-pointed star.
Richard frowned.
"What are these?"
William placed them on the table.
"The Legacy Protocol."
Sofia smiled.
"I wondered if it still existed."
Victor looked confused.
"What protocol?"
William answered calmly.
"If the library was ever discovered..."
"...it would never remain in one place."
Richard slowly understood.
"You divided it."
William nodded.
"Long ago."
He pointed toward the shelves.
"Everything important exists in eight complete collections."
"Each collection contains one-eighth of every discipline."
Victor's eyes widened.
"So no single archive contains everything."
"Exactly."
William smiled.
"If one is lost..."
"...the knowledge survives."
"If one is stolen..."
"...it remains incomplete."
James finally understood.
"You planned for failure."
William looked at him.
"No."
"We planned for humanity."
Isabella opened another cabinet.
Inside were eight waterproof steel containers.
Each no larger than a travel suitcase.
Richard stared.
"The library fits inside those?"
William laughed.
"The most essential parts."
"The rest..."
He looked around.
"...already live in people's minds."
Outside...
The villagers moved with astonishing precision.
Children handed sealed documents to elders.
Doctors packed medical manuscripts.
Engineers rolled blueprints into waterproof tubes.
Teachers copied digital files onto encrypted drives powered by small solar batteries.
Marcus watched everything through high-powered optics.
"They're evacuating."
His lieutenant nodded.
"Should we attack now?"
Marcus considered it.
"No."
"They're trapped."
"Let them finish."
He smiled.
"They're organizing our prize."
Back inside...
Richard held one of the steel cases.
"It's lighter than I expected."
William smiled.
"The weight isn't in the box."
"It's in the responsibility."
Victor looked at William.
"Who receives these?"
William answered,
"People who would rather protect knowledge than own it."
He handed one key to Richard.
"This one belongs to you."
Richard hesitated.
"I'm seventy."
"Exactly."
"You know power doesn't last forever."
William then turned toward Victor.
Everyone in the room grew silent.
Victor looked genuinely surprised.
"Me?"
William nodded.
"You've spent your life chasing truth."
Victor laughed bitterly.
"I've spent my life competing."
William smiled.
"But today..."
"...you chose people over profit."
Victor looked away.
"I almost didn't."
William gently placed the second key into Victor's hand.
"Almost."
"That's enough."
James stepped forward.
"What about the remaining six?"
William smiled.
"They've already been chosen."
The doors opened.
Six village elders entered quietly.
Each carried a small satchel.
Richard realized what was happening.
"You've prepared this for years."
William nodded.
"Forty years."
Suddenly...
A sharp whistle echoed outside.
James immediately reached for his radio.
A guard's voice came through, tense and urgent.
"They're moving!"
The room fell silent.
Marcus had broken his promise.
The sun had not yet set.
Yet dozens of soldiers were already descending the mountain slopes.
James looked through a narrow window.
"They're coming from three directions."
Victor frowned.
"He said he'd wait."
William answered calmly.
"He lied."
Sofia whispered,
"He always did."
Marcus's voice thundered across loudspeakers.
"William Vance!"
"You've had enough time."
"Surrender the archive."
"No one needs to die."
William quietly closed the wooden box.
Then he looked around the chamber.
His gaze rested on Richard.
On Victor.
On Isabella.
On Sofia.
Finally...
On the eight steel cases.
He smiled.
"They're too late."
Marcus raised one hand.
His soldiers advanced.
The first squad reached the library entrance.
They expected resistance.
Instead...
They found the doors standing open.
Marcus frowned.
"Move in."
The soldiers rushed through the entrance.
Room after room.
Shelf after shelf.
Hall after hall.
Empty.
Every manuscript.
Every journal.
Every blueprint.
Gone.
Marcus's expression hardened.
"No..."
He sprinted into the central archive.
Thousands of shelves surrounded him.
Every one of them bare.
Not a single book remained.
Only one object sat alone on the circular reading table.
A handwritten letter.
Marcus tore it open.
Inside were only three lines.
Knowledge cannot be conquered.
It can only be shared.
You arrived forty years too late.
Unsigned.
But he recognized the handwriting instantly.
William.
Marcus crushed the paper in his fist.
Outside, from eight different hidden paths leading away from the valley, eight small groups quietly disappeared into the mountains.
Each carried one steel case.
Each traveled in a different direction.
Each knew only their own destination.
The Legacy Protocol had begun.
High on a distant ridge, Richard paused for one last look at the Aurelius Library.
William stood beside him.
"Do you regret leaving it behind?" Richard asked.
William smiled peacefully.
"We didn't leave it behind."
He looked toward the eight disappearing groups.
"We finally set it free."
Far below, Marcus emerged from the empty library.
For the first time in decades...
He realized he had not lost a battle.
He had lost the very thing he came to claim.
The knowledge he had spent forty years hunting...
May you like
Was already vanishing into the world.
