Chapter 10: The Guardian of the Valley

The first rays of dawn spilled over the Andes, turning the mountain peaks into rivers of gold.

Richard Vance's expedition broke camp before sunrise.

No one spoke.

The air itself seemed to demand silence.

James checked the compass one final time before nodding toward a narrow trail disappearing into a dense cloud forest.

"This is it."

Richard looked at William's map.

Every landmark matched.

The crooked cedar tree.

The waterfall shaped like a silver ribbon.

The enormous black cliff rising above the valley.

For the first time in forty years...

He wasn't following memories.

He was following his brother.

On the opposite side of the mountain...

Victor Ashford's team advanced just as cautiously.

Dr. Sofia Alvarez suddenly stopped walking.

Victor noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

She knelt beside a weathered stone.

Someone had carved a symbol into its surface.

A circle surrounded by eight stars.

Sofia's face lost its color.

"It's here."

Victor frowned.

"What does it mean?"

She ran her fingers over the carving.

"The Order of Aurelius."

"I thought it was only a legend."

She slowly stood.

"So did I."

Hours later...

Richard's team reached the edge of a cliff.

Below them lay a hidden valley untouched by modern civilization.

Crystal-clear rivers crossed fields of wildflowers.

Ancient stone terraces climbed the hillsides.

Towering trees surrounded everything like natural walls.

It was breathtaking.

James lowered his binoculars.

"There are buildings."

Richard took them.

Half-hidden beneath vines stood dozens of stone structures.

Not ruins.

Homes.

Smoke rose from several chimneys.

Someone lived there.

James whispered,

"This place shouldn't exist."

Before they could continue...

A voice echoed across the valley.

"Stop where you are."

Every member of the team instinctively reached for their radios.

Richard raised one hand.

"No weapons."

From the trees emerged six people.

They wore simple mountain clothing, carrying old hunting rifles.

None looked hostile.

Only cautious.

The oldest among them stepped forward.

"You shouldn't have come."

Richard answered calmly.

"I'm looking for someone."

The old villager studied his face carefully.

Then his eyes widened.

"You..."

Richard frowned.

"Have we met?"

The villager shook his head slowly.

"No."

"But..."

"...you have your brother's eyes."

Silence swept across the valley.

Richard's heartbeat quickened.

"You knew William?"

The old man smiled gently.

"We still do."

At almost the same moment...

Victor's expedition reached another entrance to the valley.

Their path was blocked by a fallen stone arch.

Before anyone could move it...

A rifle clicked behind them.

"Don't."

Victor slowly turned.

A young woman stood among the trees.

She looked no older than twenty-five.

Dark hair.

Calm eyes.

Steady hands.

The rifle never wavered.

Sofia gasped.

"Isabella?"

The young woman lowered her weapon in surprise.

"Doctor Alvarez?"

The two embraced.

Victor looked confused.

"You know each other?"

Sofia nodded.

"I watched her grow up."

Victor frowned.

"Grow up where?"

Sofia looked toward the hidden valley.

"Here."

Back at Richard's position...

The elderly villager led the expedition down a winding stone path.

Children played beside the river.

Women baked bread in clay ovens.

Old men repaired fishing nets beneath enormous cedar trees.

It looked less like a forgotten civilization...

And more like a peaceful village frozen in time.

Richard noticed something unusual.

Everyone smiled at him.

As though they had expected him.

Finally...

He couldn't remain silent.

"How?"

The villager looked ahead.

"He told us."

"Who?"

"William."

Richard stopped walking.

"What did he tell you?"

The old man smiled.

"He said..."

"...one day his little brother would find the valley."

Across the village...

Victor and Sofia followed Isabella toward a large stone building.

Unlike the others...

Its entrance was guarded.

Victor noticed the same eight-star symbol carved above the doorway.

"This is the library."

He whispered.

Sofia nodded.

"The Aurelius Library."

Before they entered...

Isabella turned toward Victor.

"One question."

Victor waited.

"Why are you here?"

He answered honestly.

"I came searching for my father's past."

She studied him.

Then quietly nodded.

"Good."

"And not treasure."

Victor looked surprised.

"You expected someone else?"

She smiled faintly.

"Many have searched."

"They all asked the wrong question."

Meanwhile...

Richard reached the center of the village.

There...

Standing beneath an ancient cedar tree...

Was an old man feeding birds.

His back faced the path.

His white hair moved gently in the breeze.

He seemed completely unaware of the approaching footsteps.

The elderly villager whispered,

"He comes here every morning."

Richard's legs suddenly felt heavy.

Forty years.

Forty birthdays.

Forty Christmases.

Forty years of wondering.

The old man slowly turned.

Blue eyes.

Kind smile.

The same smile from the faded photograph.

Only older.

Much older.

Richard couldn't speak.

Neither could the other man.

For several endless seconds...

The world became perfectly still.

Finally...

The old man smiled.

"You always were late."

Richard laughed through tears.

"You disappeared."

The old man shrugged.

"I took the long road."

Richard crossed the final distance between them.

Without another word...

The two brothers embraced.

No speeches.

No explanations.

Only forty years of silence breaking apart beneath the morning sun.

Around them...

The villagers quietly looked away.

Some moments belonged only to family.

Several hundred meters away...

Inside the Aurelius Library...

Victor examined shelves unlike anything he had ever imagined.

Thousands of hand-written books.

Ancient maps.

Scientific journals.

Engineering sketches centuries ahead of their time.

He whispered,

"This..."

"...could rewrite history."

Sofia nodded.

"That's exactly why William stayed."

Victor turned toward her.

"He chose exile..."

"...to protect this?"

She answered softly.

"He believed some knowledge should belong to humanity."

"But not until humanity was ready."

Outside...

A village bell rang.

Isabella looked toward the square.

"They've arrived."

Sofia smiled.

"Richard?"

Isabella nodded.

"And William."

Victor slowly closed the journal in his hands.

"So..."

"The brothers are together again."

He walked toward the library door.

Sofia stepped in front of him.

"Remember your promise."

Victor met her eyes.

"I came for the truth."

"And you'll have it."

She looked toward the village square.

"But first..."

"...you need to meet the man your father called his greatest friend."

Victor stepped into the sunlight.

Across the square...

He saw two elderly brothers standing side by side.

For the first time in his life...

Richard Vance wasn't standing alone.

And for the first time in forty years...

May you like

William Vance had stepped back into the light.
