Chapter 1 - The Bowl on the FloorLucy was kneeling beside a dog bowl.

It was filled with cold pieces of toast, scrambled eggs, and a few strips of bacon left over from breakfast.
Her small hands were resting against her knees.
She was not eating.
She was crying too hard to breathe properly.
Vittorio stopped in the doorway.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then his eyes traveled from the bowl to his daughter.
Lucy was eight years old.
Her school uniform was wrinkled. One sock had fallen halfway down her ankle. There was a red mark around her wrist.
Vittorio's voice came out frighteningly calm.
“Lucy.”
The girl looked up.
Her face changed immediately.
“Daddy?”
She scrambled to her feet.
Vittorio crossed the room in two steps.
“What happened?”
Lucy opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then she ran into his arms.
Vittorio caught her against his chest.
She buried her face in his neck and began sobbing.
His hand moved slowly over her hair.
“Tell me who did this.”
Lucy shook her head.
“It’s okay,” he whispered. “You can tell me.”
Her voice was barely audible.
“Bianca.”
Vittorio looked toward the dining room.
Bianca was standing there with one hand resting on the back of a chair.
She looked almost offended.
“Don't make this dramatic.”
Vittorio stared at her.
“Why is my daughter eating from a dog bowl?”
Bianca sighed.
“Because she behaved like an animal.”
The room became silent.
Marcus stood near the kitchen doorway.
His arms were folded.
A smile touched his mouth.
Vittorio noticed it.
That smile would stay in his mind for years.
“What did she do?” he asked.
“She lied.”
Lucy suddenly cried harder.
“I didn't lie.”
Bianca rolled her eyes.
“She stole food after I told her not to.”
“I was hungry,” Lucy whispered.
Bianca shrugged.
“So I gave her what an animal deserves.”
Vittorio's jaw tightened.
“Get out.”
Bianca blinked.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“This is a family issue.”
Vittorio turned.
“Then why are you laughing?”
Marcus's smile vanished.
Before anyone could speak, Emma appeared in the hallway.
She was the housekeeper.
Her face was pale.
“Mr. Vittorio…”
“What?”
Emma hesitated.
Then she held up her phone.
“I recorded something this morning.”
Bianca went rigid.
Marcus moved immediately.
“Give me that.”
Emma stepped backward.
Vittorio's voice cut through the room.
“Don't touch her.”
Marcus froze.
Emma pressed play.
The video began with Lucy sitting at the breakfast table.
Bianca stood over her.
“Finish the plate.”
Lucy pushed it away.
“I don't want it.”
Bianca grabbed the plate.
“You don't want it?”
“No.”
Bianca smiled.
“Then you don't deserve one.”
The video shook slightly.
Emma had clearly filmed from behind the pantry door.
Bianca carried the plate away.
Marcus could be heard laughing.
Then Bianca placed the dog bowl on the floor.
“Get down.”
Lucy stared at her.
“No.”
Bianca pointed toward the bowl.
“If you behave like an animal, eat like one.”
Marcus laughed again.
Lucy began crying.
She looked toward the hallway.
“Daddy will be mad.”
Bianca crouched beside her.
“No. Your daddy will believe me.”
Vittorio's blood ran cold.
The video continued.
Marcus closed the door.
The sound of the lock was unmistakable.
Lucy begged.
Bianca threatened.
And then the screen went black.
Vittorio slowly lowered the phone.
“How many times?”
Emma swallowed.
“I don't know.”
Marcus lunged.
Vittorio caught him by the collar.
“You touch that phone again, and you're leaving this house in an ambulance.”
Marcus froze.
Bianca reached toward Lucy.
Vittorio stepped between them.
“Don't.”
Bianca's expression hardened.
“You're overreacting.”
Vittorio picked up the dog bowl.
He placed it on the dining table.
Then he pushed it toward Bianca.
“Enjoy your last meal in my house.”
Her face went white.
Marcus looked toward the front door.
Vittorio pointed.
“Leave.”
Bianca didn't move.
“I am the woman of this house.”
“No,” Vittorio said.
His voice became colder.
“You were the woman I trusted.”
That sentence destroyed the last bit of color in her face.
Security arrived.
Bianca finally walked away.
Marcus followed.
But before he reached the door, he turned.
“You don't know what you're doing.”
Vittorio stared at him.
“I know exactly what I'm doing.”
Marcus leaned closer.
“You should watch the whole video before you throw people out.”
Then he left.
Vittorio looked at Emma.
“What did he mean?”
Emma's fingers were trembling.
“There is another video.”
“Where?”
“I hid it.”
“Why?”
Emma looked toward Lucy.
The child had stopped crying.
She was staring at the floor.
Then she whispered something that made Vittorio's stomach drop.
“Daddy…”
He knelt beside her.
“What?”
Lucy looked toward the closed dining room door.
“Mommy told me never to go into the basement.”
Vittorio frowned.
“Why?”
Lucy finally looked into his eyes.
“Because Bianca keeps Mommy's things there.”
Vittorio felt the room tilt.
His wife, Elena, had died eighteen months earlier.
Everything belonging to her had supposedly been packed away.
There was nothing left in the basement.
At least, that was what Bianca had told him.
Vittorio stood.
“Emma.”
“Yes?”
“Take me to the basement.”
Emma didn't move.
“Mr. Vittorio…”
“What?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“The second video came from there.”
And suddenly Vittorio understood something terrifying.
The dog bowl had never been the real secret.
May you like
It had only been the door.
And someone had spent months making sure he never opened it.
