Chapter 16 - The ChoiceThe clock began.

Ten minutes.

Meredith knew Helena expected panic.

So she gave her none.

She looked at Julian.

“Don't save anyone.”

He stared.

“What?”

“Follow me.”

She walked to the vault's central terminal.

Julian followed.

Meredith accessed the security network.

“If Helena wants the trust key, she expects us to surrender.”

Julian understood.

“She doesn't know the key isn't the necklace.”

Meredith shook her head.

“No.”

She removed the necklace.

Inside it was the tracking chip.

“The real key is inside my father's estate records.”

Julian frowned.

“Where?”

Meredith smiled faintly.

“Somewhere nobody would look.”

She turned toward Genevieve.

“Your ring.”

Genevieve looked confused.

“The storage crystal was never the evidence.”

“What was it?”

“A map.”

Meredith connected it.

A three-dimensional blueprint appeared.

The entire Sterling estate was displayed.

A hidden chamber was highlighted.

Beneath the garden.

Meredith gasped.

“The greenhouse.”

Julian stared.

“Your father?”

“He built something beneath it.”

They ran.

Helena shouted after them.

Security intercepted her.

Meredith reached the greenhouse.

She smashed the central stone planter.

Beneath it was a steel hatch.

Inside was the real archive.

Hard drives.

Documents.

Recordings.

And one sealed envelope.

It was addressed to Meredith.

She opened it.

Her father's handwriting.

You will eventually learn that power does not protect people. People protect people.

Beneath that:

The trust is not money. It is a witness.

Meredith looked at Julian.

“A witness.”

He stared at the archive.

“What witness?”

The monitor turned on.

A live video appeared.

Her father's face filled the screen.

“If you are watching this,” he said, “I have failed to stop them.”

Meredith's eyes filled with tears.

“But you have not failed completely.”

He revealed the final secret.

The senator had survived.

He had spent twenty-five years living under a false identity.

And he had built a case against Meridian.

The case was complete.

But he needed one final piece.

The confession of the Architect.

Meredith looked at Helena.

She had been listening.

Her face had changed.

“You knew.”

Helena smiled.

“I know everything.”

Then the greenhouse doors locked.

Gas began filling the room.

Julian shouted:

“Get down!”

Meredith grabbed the archive.

Helena laughed.

“You're all going to die here.”

But she didn't see the security camera above her.

Adrian did.

His voice came through the speaker.

“Mother.”

Helena froze.

“You should have checked the cameras.”

The doors opened.

Security flooded in.

Helena was surrounded.

Adrian had turned the house against her.

But before she was arrested, Helena smiled at Meredith.

“You still haven't met The Architect.”

Meredith stared.

“It's not me.”

Helena laughed.

“No.”

May you like

She looked toward Julian.

“It’s him.”
