Chapter 13 - The Real EnemyMargaret Mercer had been hiding for eighteen years.

She had watched Caldwell Hotels grow.
She had watched Harrison die.
She had watched Veronica take control.
And she had watched Preston approach me.
"I tried to stop it," she said.
"Why didn't you?"
"Because the person behind it was much more powerful than Veronica."
"Who?"
She looked at my father.
Then my mother.
Neither of them spoke.
Margaret whispered:
"Robert Grant."
My grandfather.
I felt numb.
"He arranged my marriage?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To trigger the trust."
I stared at the old woman.
"What does that mean?"
"Your grandfather knew the Caldwell family would eventually collapse. He wanted to make sure the Grant family controlled the aftermath."
"But why Preston?"
"Because Preston was weak."
I thought of the man holding me in that foyer.
The man who had been terrified of his mother.
The man who had lied to me.
Margaret continued.
"Preston was supposed to become the legal bridge between Caldwell and Grant."
"And Veronica?"
"Veronica was supposed to take control."
"Of what?"
"Everything."
The vault seemed to shrink around me.
My grandfather had not designed my life to protect me.
He had designed it to position me.
I had been a piece on a board.
But Margaret wasn't finished.
"Your grandfather expected Veronica to betray Preston."
"Why?"
"Because he knew she would."
"And then?"
"Your father would intervene."
My father closed his eyes.
"Which would activate the final transfer."
I looked at him.
"You knew?"
"Some of it."
"How much?"
"Enough to hate myself."
My mother stepped forward.
"William tried to stop it."
Margaret shook her head.
"Too late."
I looked down at the ledger.
"What's in this?"
Margaret opened it.
The pages contained names.
Politicians.
Bankers.
Judges.
Corporate executives.
And one name appeared more often than any other.
Elias Grant.
My grandfather.
Payments.
Transfers.
Bribes.
Illegal acquisitions.
He had been the architect.
Harrison Caldwell had been his partner.
The Caldwell empire wasn't a separate criminal enterprise.
It was one branch of my family's original machine.
I felt sick.
"What did my grandfather do to the Mercers?"
Margaret's face hardened.
"He ordered Thomas killed."
My father stepped forward.
"No."
Margaret looked at him.
"You knew."
"I knew Thomas was targeted."
"You knew."
My father didn't answer.
I looked at him.
"You knew my grandfather killed him."
My father's eyes filled with tears.
"I couldn't prove it."
"And you protected him."
"I protected you."
That sentence broke something inside me.
Everyone had used the word protection to justify secrets.
My father.
My grandfather.
Veronica.
Preston.
I was done being protected.
I closed the ledger.
"Where is Veronica?"
Margaret looked at me.
"Close."
The lights went out.
Again.
This time, the emergency lights turned red.
A security door exploded inward.
Veronica entered with armed men.
She looked at me.
"Give me the ledger."
"No."
She smiled.
"You still don't understand."
She held up a phone.
A live video appeared.
Preston.
Alive.
He was being held at gunpoint.
Veronica said:
"Give me the ledger or he dies."
I looked at the screen.
Preston was bleeding.
His eyes found mine.
He shook his head.
Don't.
Veronica cocked the gun.
"Choose."
My father stepped toward me.
"Amelia."
I looked at the ledger.
Then at Preston.
Then at Veronica.
And suddenly I understood.
She expected me to trade.
But I wasn't going to.
I threw the ledger into the fire.
Veronica screamed.
"No!"
The pages caught immediately.
She rushed forward.
And while everyone watched the flames, Margaret whispered:
"The real ledger was never in your hands."
I looked at her.
She smiled.
"It was copied years ago."
My heart started pounding.
"Where?"
May you like
Margaret pointed at my phone.
"Inside the account you just froze."
