Chapter 12 - The RingThe ring was a key.

We discovered it at the chapel.

Not physically.

Electronically.

Daniel scanned the inside of the ring and found a tiny embedded chip.

My father stared at it.

"Who made this?"

"Your grandfather," Daniel said.

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because the vault requires biometric authorization."

"What does that have to do with me?"

"You are the authorization."

My mother stared at the ring.

"Your grandfather planned everything."

We entered the chapel through a concealed passage.

Behind the altar was a steel door.

No keypad.

No lock.

Just a small indentation.

My ring fit perfectly.

The door opened.

Inside was a vault.

Shelves filled with documents.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Ledgers.

Boxes of evidence.

And in the center, one wooden table.

A single envelope rested on it.

Addressed to me.

Amelia.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The letter was from my grandfather.

He wrote that the Grant family had made terrible choices.

He admitted financing Caldwell Hotels.

He admitted hiding evidence.

He admitted building the trust.

But there was one reason.

He believed the Caldwell family would eventually become too dangerous.

The trust was designed to destroy them when the time came.

The final paragraph stopped me.

Your father will tell you that he protected you. He did. But he also protected Caldwell. He believes the debt can be repaid without bloodshed. I do not.

I looked at my father.

He turned away.

The next line was worse.

When Amelia is married, the final stage begins.

I stopped reading.

My marriage.

My wedding.

My grandfather had anticipated it.

But how?

The answer came in the final page.

Preston Caldwell was never selected to inherit the empire. He was selected because he could be sacrificed.

I looked at Daniel.

"Meaning?"

"Your grandfather expected Veronica to use Preston."

I read the final sentence.

When Preston betrays Amelia, expose him.

I slowly lowered the paper.

A sound echoed through the vault.

Footsteps.

We turned.

Preston stood in the doorway.

He was alone.

His face was pale.

"You found it."

I stared.

"You knew about the vault?"

"No."

"Then how did you get here?"

He held up his hands.

"I was brought."

"By who?"

He looked behind him.

"No one."

The door suddenly slammed shut.

A voice came through the speakers.

Veronica.

"You've all been very predictable."

My father moved toward the door.

"Open it."

She laughed.

"William, you still believe you are in control."

The vault lights flickered.

Veronica continued.

"Preston, you have one job."

Preston looked terrified.

"What?"

"Take the ring."

He shook his head.

"No."

"Take it."

"No."

Her voice hardened.

"You know what happens to people who disappoint me."

Preston looked at me.

Then at my father.

And for the first time, I saw real fear in his eyes.

He stepped forward.

I stepped back.

"Don't."

He stopped.

"I can't."

"You can."

"I don't want to hurt you."

"Then don't."

He closed his eyes.

A gunshot echoed outside the vault.

Preston flinched.

Veronica screamed through the speaker:

"Take the ring!"

He didn't move.

Then a second gunshot.

This time, the sound came from somewhere inside the vault.

Preston collapsed.

Blood spread across his shirt.

I screamed.

My father caught him.

"No!"

Preston looked at me.

His lips moved.

"Run."

Then he pointed toward the far wall.

There was a hidden door.

I opened it.

Inside was a second room.

And someone was already waiting.

An elderly woman.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

She looked at me.

Then whispered:

"Amelia Grant?"

I nodded.

She smiled sadly.

"My name is Margaret Mercer."

I froze.

"Claire's mother."

She nodded.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"I know who actually ordered your wedding."
