PART 2 — THE WOMAN THEY NEVER KNEW The ballroom remained frozen. No one moved. No one spoke. The only sound was the soft hum of the security cameras above us, quietly recording the aftermath of the most humiliating moment of my life. Chloe still stood in front of me, holding my empty purse like a trophy. She looked satisfied. Confident. Certain. She believed the entire room belonged to her. After all, this was supposed to be her wedding night. Her moment. Her victory. She never imagined that the woman she had just destroyed in front of two hundred guests was the one person in the room who had the power to take everything away from her. I lowered my phone slowly. My father's words remained in my mind. "They're already on their way." For years, I had avoided using my family's name. Not because I was ashamed. But because I wanted to know whether people would accept me without knowing where I came from. I wanted to believe that kindness mattered more than money. That character mattered more than status. That love mattered more than reputation. I was wrong. The Carter family had taught me a painful lesson. Some people don't respect you because of who you are. They respect you because of what they think you can give them. And when they believe you have nothing... They show you exactly who they are. "Why are you smiling?" Chloe's voice interrupted my thoughts. I looked at her. Her expression changed slightly. Because for the first time tonight, I wasn't afraid. "You think you know everything about me." She tilted her head. "What does that mean?" "It means you've spent three years judging a person you never bothered to understand." A few guests exchanged confused looks. Chloe laughed. "Please." She looked at my torn maternity gown. "Don't pretend you're some mysterious woman with secrets. Everyone here knows what you are." I stayed silent. "What am I?" I asked. Chloe stepped closer. "A woman who married above her position." The words echoed. Some guests looked uncomfortable. Others looked away. Because everyone knew she had crossed a line. But nobody wanted to be the first person to challenge the Carter family. Chloe continued. "My brother was generous enough to give you a life you could never create yourself." My fingers tightened. Not because her words hurt. But because I suddenly realized something. I had spent years trying to earn the approval of people who had already decided I didn't deserve it. And tonight... I was done. Before I could answer, Eleanor stepped forward. The same woman who had torn my dress apart without hesitation. The same woman who had watched her daughter accuse me without evidence. She looked at me with cold satisfaction. "Enough acting." She pointed at my phone. "Who did you call?" I didn't answer. Eleanor's eyes narrowed. "You think making a phone call changes anything?" "No." My voice was calm. "It doesn't." She smiled. "Good. Then you understand." She turned toward the guests. "This woman has embarrassed our family enough." A few people nodded. My heart sank. Not because they believed her. But because they were willing to believe anything if it meant avoiding conflict. Eleanor continued. "We will handle this privately." Then she looked at me. "You will apologize to Chloe." The room became silent again. I stared at her. "Apologize?" "Yes." "For what?" Her face hardened. "For causing this scene." A strange feeling passed through me. Almost disbelief. Three years. Three years of swallowing insults. Three years of pretending cruel words didn't hurt. Three years of trying to keep peace. And somehow... I was still the problem. I looked toward Dominic. Maybe a part of me still hoped. Maybe some small piece of the man I married was still there. I waited. One second. Two seconds. Five seconds. Nothing. Dominic stood beside the stage, surrounded by his family. Not beside me. With them. That was when something inside me finally broke. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just quietly. Like a door closing forever. I turned back toward Eleanor. "I won't apologize." Her eyes widened. "What did you say?" "I said I won't apologize." Chloe stepped forward. "After everything you've done?" I looked directly at her. "You accused me of stealing your ring." "You allowed your mother to tear my dress." "You humiliated me in front of everyone." I paused. "And you still expect me to apologize?" My voice remained steady. "No." The room felt different. Because for the first time... They weren't looking at a victim. They were looking at someone they didn't understand. Eleanor laughed coldly. "You really think you have power here?" "No." I looked around the ballroom. Then back at her. "I know." Before she could respond, the main entrance doors opened. Slowly. Quietly. At first, nobody noticed. Then the nearest guests turned. And froze. Because walking into the ballroom were six people wearing dark suits. Not security. Not police. Lawyers. Behind them came a tall man in his sixties. Silver hair. Straight posture. A presence that instantly changed the atmosphere of the room. The conversation died. The wedding planner covered her mouth in shock. Because she recognized him. Everyone in the business world recognized him. The man who built one of the largest private investment companies in the country. The man whose name appeared on skyscrapers, technology companies, and international foundations. My father. Alexander Laurent. Chloe's smile disappeared. Eleanor's face lost its confidence. Dominic finally looked awake. "Dad..." He whispered. Not to his father. To mine. The ballroom erupted in whispers. "That's Alexander Laurent..." "The billionaire?" "What is he doing here?" My father didn't look at anyone else. He walked directly toward me. His eyes immediately found the torn fabric of my dress. The bruises on my wrist. The tears I had refused to let fall. And for the first time that night... Someone looked at me like I mattered. His expression changed. Not anger. Something colder. Controlled fury. "Vivienne." His voice was gentle. "Are you hurt?" I shook my head. "I'm okay." But my voice betrayed me. My father looked at my stomach. At his unborn grandchild. Then back at the people surrounding me. Nobody spoke. Because they finally understood. The woman they had called worthless... The woman they had humiliated... Was not alone. My father turned toward Chloe. "Now." His voice filled the ballroom. "Let's discuss this accusation." Chloe swallowed. "I... I don't understand." My father glanced at the security camera above us. "You will." One of his lawyers stepped forward and placed a tablet on the nearest table. The screen lit up. Security footage. The entire ballroom watched. The video began. And suddenly... Everyone saw what really happened. The missing ring. The accusation. The moment Chloe walked toward me. The moment Eleanor grabbed my dress. But then... The video showed something nobody expected. Ten minutes before Chloe screamed. Amanda walked behind the bride's table. She opened a small jewelry box. She removed something. A diamond ring. Then she placed it inside her purse. The ballroom went silent. Chloe's face turned white. Amanda stopped breathing. And my father spoke the words that changed everything. "The thief was never Vivienne." He looked directly at Chloe. "The thief was standing beside you." / Chapter 5 / 13

PART 7 — THE HUSBAND WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

PART 7 — THE HUSBAND WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The recording ended.

But Dominic's voice remained.

Those words.

That sentence.

They kept repeating in my head.

"I need to know whether she was ever really in danger."

The ballroom felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Even the air felt heavier.

I stared at Dominic.

The man standing in front of me was familiar.

His face.

His voice.

His eyes.

Everything looked the same.

And yet...

I felt like I was looking at a stranger.

"Tell me it's fake."

My voice was quiet.

Almost a whisper.

Dominic didn't answer.

That was the answer.

My heart sank.

"Dominic."

He closed his eyes.

"Vivienne..."

"No."

I stepped back.

"Don't say my name like that."

His expression broke.

Because he knew.

He knew I wasn't angry anymore.

Anger meant I still cared enough to fight.

What I felt now was worse.

Disappointment.

The kind that arrives when someone you trusted finally shows you the truth.

"Explain."

One word.

One request.

The final chance.

Dominic looked at my father.

Then at Chloe.

Then back at me.

"I was trying to find out the truth."

I stared at him.

"The truth?"

"About what?"

He swallowed.

"About my family."

A bitter laugh escaped me.

"Your family?"

"You knew they were dangerous."

"You knew something could happen to me."

"And you used me as bait?"

"No."

His answer came immediately.

"I didn't."

"Then what did you do?"

Silence.

Again.

Always silence.

My father stepped forward.

"Answer her."

Dominic looked destroyed.

But finally...

He spoke.

"Three years ago, before our wedding, I discovered my mother and Chloe were planning something."

My fingers tightened.

"What kind of something?"

He looked at the floor.

"They wanted to scare you."

"To make you leave."

The room became quiet.

"Why?"

"Because they believed if you left me, I would return to the family plan."

"The engagement with Isabella."

My chest tightened.

"So they threatened me."

Dominic nodded.

"But I never thought they would go that far."

My eyes burned.

"But they did."

He looked at me.

"I know."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You don't know."

My voice cracked.

"You found out later."

"You lived normally."

"You ate dinner with them."

"You smiled at them."

"While I..."

I touched my stomach.

"While I was carrying the fear of what happened to me."

Dominic looked like every word was cutting him.

But I continued.

"Do you know what I remembered every night?"

"The sound of metal breaking."

"The rain."

"The feeling that I was going to die alone on that road."

"And you knew something."

"You knew."

The room was silent.

Even Chloe stopped smiling.

Because she realized something.

The woman she wanted to destroy wasn't crying.

She was finally speaking.

Dominic whispered:

"I'm sorry."

Two words.

Two simple words.

But they arrived after years of damage.

And sometimes an apology is a key offered after someone has already burned the house down.

I looked at him.

"I don't need your apology."

His eyes lifted.

"I need the truth."

A long pause.

Then I asked:

"Did you know about the accident before it happened?"

Dominic didn't answer.

My father looked at him.

"Dominic."

Finally...

He nodded.

Only slightly.

But enough.

My heart stopped.

"How long before?"

His voice was almost invisible.

"One day."

One day.

Twenty-four hours.

That was all.

Twenty-four hours between knowing someone wanted to hurt me...

And letting me walk into that car.

I felt dizzy.

My father immediately stepped closer.

"Vivienne."

I raised my hand.

I didn't want anyone touching me.

Not even him.

Because at that moment...

I needed to stand.

I needed to feel the ground beneath my feet.

"Why?"

I looked at Dominic.

"Why didn't you stop me?"

His eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was afraid."

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

"Afraid of what?"

He looked at Chloe.

Then Eleanor's empty chair.

Then me.

"Afraid that if I accused them without proof, I would lose everything."

I stared.

"Everything?"

He nodded.

"My family."

"My inheritance."

"My position."

I waited.

But he never said the one thing I needed to hear.

Not me.

Not once.

My eyes closed.

And suddenly I understood.

Dominic didn't choose his family because he didn't love me.

He chose them because he loved himself more.

And that truth was somehow harder to accept.

Chloe suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned toward her.

"You see?"

She looked at me.

"That's what I've been trying to tell you."

I looked at her.

"Don't pretend you're helping me."

Her smile faded.

"Maybe I don't care about helping you."

She admitted.

"But I'm not the only monster here."

The words were cruel.

But true.

Dominic looked at her.

"Chloe."

She ignored him.

"You think I wanted you gone because I hated you?"

She stepped closer.

"I hated you because you ruined everything."

I stared.

"What?"

She laughed bitterly.

"Before you came along, Dominic belonged to this family."

"Then you appeared."

"You made him question everything."

"You made him want a normal life."

Her expression darkened.

"And my mother hated that."

My father crossed his arms.

"You're admitting everything."

Chloe looked at him.

"Maybe."

She smiled.

"But you still don't know the worst part."

Everyone froze.

Dominic's face changed.

"Chloe."

"Stop."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

"You're going to keep pretending?"

She turned toward me.

"Tell her."

My stomach tightened.

"Tell me what?"

Chloe smiled.

"The reason Dominic really married you."

I looked at him.

"What?"

Dominic immediately shook his head.

"No."

Chloe continued.

"Tell her about the test."

My father's expression changed.

"What test?"

Dominic went pale.

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

"What test?"

No answer.

Then Chloe spoke.

"After the accident, Dominic wanted to know something."

She looked directly at me.

"He wanted to know whether you would stay with him even if you lost everything."

I felt cold.

"No."

Chloe nodded.

"Yes."

She pulled out another document.

"Your marriage wasn't just a condition for inheritance."

"It was also a test created by Dominic himself."

I looked at Dominic.

The man I loved.

The man I defended.

The man I married.

"Is this true?"

His lips parted.

But no words came.

And that was enough.

I felt something inside me collapse.

Because all this time...

I thought my marriage was destroyed by his family.

I was wrong.

The foundation was already cracked.

Before Chloe.

Before Eleanor.

Before the stolen ring.

Dominic had placed the first stone.

My father took the document from Chloe.

He read it.

His expression changed.

Then he looked at Dominic.

"You did this?"

Dominic whispered:

"I was desperate."

I stared at him.

"Desperate enough to experiment with my heart?"

His tears fell.

"Vivienne, please."

I stepped back.

"No."

The word was final.

"I spent three years trying to prove I deserved to be loved."

My voice shook.

"But I never realized..."

I looked at him.

"I was married to someone who was measuring whether I was worth loving."

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone vibrated.

Another message.

Unknown number.

I looked down.

This time, there was a video file.

The title made my blood run cold.

"THE NIGHT YOU WERE SAVED."

I pressed play.

The video began.

A dark road.

Rain.

My crashed car.

And then...

A figure walking toward me.

A figure I recognized.

Someone who had told me for three years:

"I found you that night."

But the video showed something different.

Because Dominic wasn't arriving after the accident.

May you like

He was there...

Before it happened.
