PART 2 — THE WOMAN THEY NEVER KNEW The ballroom remained frozen. No one moved. No one spoke. The only sound was the soft hum of the security cameras above us, quietly recording the aftermath of the most humiliating moment of my life. Chloe still stood in front of me, holding my empty purse like a trophy. She looked satisfied. Confident. Certain. She believed the entire room belonged to her. After all, this was supposed to be her wedding night. Her moment. Her victory. She never imagined that the woman she had just destroyed in front of two hundred guests was the one person in the room who had the power to take everything away from her. I lowered my phone slowly. My father's words remained in my mind. "They're already on their way." For years, I had avoided using my family's name. Not because I was ashamed. But because I wanted to know whether people would accept me without knowing where I came from. I wanted to believe that kindness mattered more than money. That character mattered more than status. That love mattered more than reputation. I was wrong. The Carter family had taught me a painful lesson. Some people don't respect you because of who you are. They respect you because of what they think you can give them. And when they believe you have nothing... They show you exactly who they are. "Why are you smiling?" Chloe's voice interrupted my thoughts. I looked at her. Her expression changed slightly. Because for the first time tonight, I wasn't afraid. "You think you know everything about me." She tilted her head. "What does that mean?" "It means you've spent three years judging a person you never bothered to understand." A few guests exchanged confused looks. Chloe laughed. "Please." She looked at my torn maternity gown. "Don't pretend you're some mysterious woman with secrets. Everyone here knows what you are." I stayed silent. "What am I?" I asked. Chloe stepped closer. "A woman who married above her position." The words echoed. Some guests looked uncomfortable. Others looked away. Because everyone knew she had crossed a line. But nobody wanted to be the first person to challenge the Carter family. Chloe continued. "My brother was generous enough to give you a life you could never create yourself." My fingers tightened. Not because her words hurt. But because I suddenly realized something. I had spent years trying to earn the approval of people who had already decided I didn't deserve it. And tonight... I was done. Before I could answer, Eleanor stepped forward. The same woman who had torn my dress apart without hesitation. The same woman who had watched her daughter accuse me without evidence. She looked at me with cold satisfaction. "Enough acting." She pointed at my phone. "Who did you call?" I didn't answer. Eleanor's eyes narrowed. "You think making a phone call changes anything?" "No." My voice was calm. "It doesn't." She smiled. "Good. Then you understand." She turned toward the guests. "This woman has embarrassed our family enough." A few people nodded. My heart sank. Not because they believed her. But because they were willing to believe anything if it meant avoiding conflict. Eleanor continued. "We will handle this privately." Then she looked at me. "You will apologize to Chloe." The room became silent again. I stared at her. "Apologize?" "Yes." "For what?" Her face hardened. "For causing this scene." A strange feeling passed through me. Almost disbelief. Three years. Three years of swallowing insults. Three years of pretending cruel words didn't hurt. Three years of trying to keep peace. And somehow... I was still the problem. I looked toward Dominic. Maybe a part of me still hoped. Maybe some small piece of the man I married was still there. I waited. One second. Two seconds. Five seconds. Nothing. Dominic stood beside the stage, surrounded by his family. Not beside me. With them. That was when something inside me finally broke. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just quietly. Like a door closing forever. I turned back toward Eleanor. "I won't apologize." Her eyes widened. "What did you say?" "I said I won't apologize." Chloe stepped forward. "After everything you've done?" I looked directly at her. "You accused me of stealing your ring." "You allowed your mother to tear my dress." "You humiliated me in front of everyone." I paused. "And you still expect me to apologize?" My voice remained steady. "No." The room felt different. Because for the first time... They weren't looking at a victim. They were looking at someone they didn't understand. Eleanor laughed coldly. "You really think you have power here?" "No." I looked around the ballroom. Then back at her. "I know." Before she could respond, the main entrance doors opened. Slowly. Quietly. At first, nobody noticed. Then the nearest guests turned. And froze. Because walking into the ballroom were six people wearing dark suits. Not security. Not police. Lawyers. Behind them came a tall man in his sixties. Silver hair. Straight posture. A presence that instantly changed the atmosphere of the room. The conversation died. The wedding planner covered her mouth in shock. Because she recognized him. Everyone in the business world recognized him. The man who built one of the largest private investment companies in the country. The man whose name appeared on skyscrapers, technology companies, and international foundations. My father. Alexander Laurent. Chloe's smile disappeared. Eleanor's face lost its confidence. Dominic finally looked awake. "Dad..." He whispered. Not to his father. To mine. The ballroom erupted in whispers. "That's Alexander Laurent..." "The billionaire?" "What is he doing here?" My father didn't look at anyone else. He walked directly toward me. His eyes immediately found the torn fabric of my dress. The bruises on my wrist. The tears I had refused to let fall. And for the first time that night... Someone looked at me like I mattered. His expression changed. Not anger. Something colder. Controlled fury. "Vivienne." His voice was gentle. "Are you hurt?" I shook my head. "I'm okay." But my voice betrayed me. My father looked at my stomach. At his unborn grandchild. Then back at the people surrounding me. Nobody spoke. Because they finally understood. The woman they had called worthless... The woman they had humiliated... Was not alone. My father turned toward Chloe. "Now." His voice filled the ballroom. "Let's discuss this accusation." Chloe swallowed. "I... I don't understand." My father glanced at the security camera above us. "You will." One of his lawyers stepped forward and placed a tablet on the nearest table. The screen lit up. Security footage. The entire ballroom watched. The video began. And suddenly... Everyone saw what really happened. The missing ring. The accusation. The moment Chloe walked toward me. The moment Eleanor grabbed my dress. But then... The video showed something nobody expected. Ten minutes before Chloe screamed. Amanda walked behind the bride's table. She opened a small jewelry box. She removed something. A diamond ring. Then she placed it inside her purse. The ballroom went silent. Chloe's face turned white. Amanda stopped breathing. And my father spoke the words that changed everything. "The thief was never Vivienne." He looked directly at Chloe. "The thief was standing beside you." / Chapter 4 / 13

PART 6 — THE ACCIDENT THAT WASN'T AN ACCIDENT

PART 6 — THE ACCIDENT THAT WASN'T AN ACCIDENT

The name echoed through the empty ballroom.

"Chloe."

For a moment...

I couldn't understand what I had just heard.

My mind rejected it.

Because Chloe had always been cruel.

Arrogant.

Selfish.

But a person who insults you is one thing.

A person who tries to destroy your life is something else entirely.

I stared at Dominic.

"Say it again."

His face was filled with regret.

"It was Chloe."

My hands slowly tightened.

"No."

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Not because I believed him.

Because I didn't want to.

Because accepting the truth meant accepting something much more painful.

For three years, I had welcomed this woman into my life.

I had called her family.

I had defended her when Dominic complained about her behavior.

I had told myself:

"She just needs time."

"She will understand me eventually."

But she never wanted to understand me.

She wanted me gone.

My father stepped closer.

"Vivienne."

I looked at him.

"How long have you known?"

His expression became serious.

"Not everything."

"Only pieces."

My father's lawyer opened another file.

"We discovered the connection during our investigation."

He placed several documents on the table.

"Three years ago, approximately two weeks before your wedding, your vehicle was tampered with."

I looked down at the papers.

Pictures.

Reports.

Evidence.

My own car.

The same car that had crashed on a rainy night.

The same night I almost lost my life.

My fingers trembled.

"I was told the brakes failed."

The lawyer nodded.

"That was the official report."

"However..."

He turned a page.

"The brake line was manually damaged."

Silence.

The kind of silence that feels alive.

I looked at Dominic.

"You knew this?"

He nodded.

Slowly.

"I found out later."

My voice became colder.

"How much later?"

He looked away.

"A year after we married."

A painful laugh escaped me.

"A year."

I shook my head.

"You knew someone tried to kill me..."

"And you stayed quiet?"

Dominic stepped forward.

"I was trying to protect you."

"No."

I looked at him.

"You were trying to protect your family."

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Dominic lowered his head.

"I thought I could handle it."

"Handle it?"

My voice rose.

"You couldn't even stop your mother from tearing my dress."

The sentence destroyed him.

Because he knew.

There was no defense.

No explanation.

No excuse.

My father looked at Dominic.

"You made the same mistake your entire family makes."

Dominic looked up.

"What?"

"You confuse silence with control."

My father turned toward me.

"Your husband believed he could fix everything quietly."

"He was wrong."

I looked back at the evidence.

"Why Chloe?"

That question haunted me.

Why would she want me gone?

The lawyer answered.

"Because of inheritance."

I frowned.

"What?"

He explained.

"After your marriage, Dominic's grandfather changed his will."

"The conditions were connected to Dominic having a child."

My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.

The baby.

"The child would inherit a significant portion of the Carter family fortune."

My father nodded.

"And Chloe was supposed to inherit that position."

I looked confused.

"Why?"

"Because Chloe believed she would control Dominic."

The lawyer continued.

"She thought Dominic would never marry outside the family circle."

"She expected to marry someone who could strengthen the Carter name."

I remembered Chloe's words.

People like you always take things they can't afford.

Now I understood.

She wasn't angry because of my clothes.

She wasn't angry because of my background.

She was angry because I destroyed her plan.

I became the woman who changed Dominic's future.

The woman who gave him something Chloe couldn't.

A family.

A child.

A reason to leave their control.

My father looked at me.

"But Chloe wasn't acting alone."

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?"

He hesitated.

Then handed me another document.

The name at the top made my heart stop.

Eleanor Carter.

My eyes widened.

"His mother?"

The lawyer nodded.

"Chloe and Eleanor worked together."

The room became colder.

"Your accident..."

He paused.

"Was arranged by both of them."

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.

Not the lights.

Not the voices.

Not even Dominic calling my name.

Three years.

Three years of family dinners.

Three years of smiling politely.

Three years of sitting across from the woman who tried to erase me.

And I never knew.

My hand moved over my stomach.

My baby.

That thought terrified me more than anything.

"Did they know I was pregnant?"

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence scared me.

"Did they know?"

My father looked at his lawyer.

The lawyer finally spoke.

"No."

"They didn't."

I exhaled.

A small piece of relief.

But then another question appeared.

"Then why tonight?"

The lawyer looked at the security footage.

"The stolen ring was only a distraction."

I looked confused.

"A distraction?"

He nodded.

"Chloe wanted to create a public scandal."

"She wanted to damage your reputation."

"She wanted Dominic to choose between you and his family."

My eyes moved toward Dominic.

"And she thought he would choose them."

Dominic looked devastated.

"Vivienne..."

I interrupted.

"Did she know about my father?"

"No."

My father answered.

"She believed you were exactly who you appeared to be."

A woman with no power.

A woman with no influence.

A woman they could destroy.

The irony almost felt cruel.

Because the one thing they underestimated...

Was the only thing that saved me.

Not my money.

Not my family's name.

My refusal to become like them.

Suddenly, a sound came from the entrance.

A slow clap.

Everyone turned.

Standing there...

Was Chloe.

She was no longer wearing the confident smile from earlier.

Her makeup was slightly ruined.

Her eyes were filled with anger.

The police officer behind her looked confused.

"Miss Carter, you cannot be here."

Chloe ignored him.

She stared directly at me.

"So."

Her voice was quiet.

"You finally know."

My father stepped forward.

"You should leave."

But Chloe laughed.

"No."

She looked at me.

"She deserves to hear everything."

Dominic's face changed.

"Chloe, stop."

But she continued.

"You think I'm the villain?"

She looked at me.

"You think I ruined your life because I hated you?"

I said nothing.

Chloe walked closer.

"The truth is..."

She smiled.

"I was trying to save Dominic."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

She looked at Dominic.

"He never told you, did he?"

My heart tightened.

"What are you talking about?"

Chloe's eyes returned to mine.

"Your husband wasn't the victim."

"He was the reason your life was destroyed."

Dominic immediately stepped forward.

"That's a lie."

But Chloe pulled out her phone.

And held it up.

A video appeared.

A recording.

A conversation.

Dominic's voice.

Three years ago.

The room froze.

Then his voice played.

"If something happens to Vivienne..."

The recording continued.

And I heard the sentence that shattered everything.

"I need to know whether she was ever really in danger."

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Dominic.

"No..."

The video kept playing.

And then came the words that changed my entire understanding of my marriage.

Dominic had known about the plan before the accident.

He hadn't caused it.

But he knew something might happen.

And he let me walk into danger.

The man I thought saved me...

May have been the person who failed to protect me.

I looked at him.

And whispered:

"Why?"

Dominic had no answer.

Because this time...

There was no explanation.

No excuse.

May you like

No later.

Only the truth.
