Chapter 11 - The KnifeLena pointed the knife at my husband.

“Don't.”
I stepped between them.
“Why are you doing this?”
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Because he knows where they buried the truth.”
My husband shook his head.
“I didn't bury anything.”
“You helped them.”
“I was a child.”
“So was I.”
The knife trembled in her hand.
Then she looked at me.
“You need to leave.”
My mother grabbed me.
“Listen to your sister.”
“But the mark…”
“Can be broken.”
“How?”
My mother looked at Lena.
“Tell her.”
Lena wiped her tears.
“You need to find the original agreement.”
“Where?”
“In the family chapel.”
My husband's mother laughed.
“You will never reach it.”
Then the basement doors slammed open.
A group of family members stood outside.
All wearing white.
My husband grabbed my hand.
“Run.”
We rushed through a side corridor.
Behind us, footsteps followed.
Lena shouted:
“Down the tunnel!”
I stopped.
“What tunnel?”
She pointed at an old cupboard.
Behind it was a narrow opening.
We crawled inside.
The tunnel smelled of earth.
After several minutes, we reached a hidden room.
At its center was a wooden table.
On it lay a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
My husband stared.
“That handwriting…”
I touched the envelope.
It was my father's.
Inside was a single letter.
I unfolded it.
The first sentence made my hands shake.
My daughter, if you are reading this, I failed to save your sister.
I kept reading.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
Your husband was never supposed to marry you.
I looked at him.
He was crying.
Because he already knew.
I raised the letter.
“Who was I supposed to marry?”
He whispered:
“My older brother.”
I stared at him.
“You don't have an older brother.”
May you like
He looked toward Lena.
“She killed him.”
