Chapter 8 - What Caroline Carried AwayGrant didn't run.

That somehow made it worse.

He stood in the doorway as if he had been waiting years for this exact moment.

I grabbed his collar.

“What did Caroline do?”

Grant looked at me.

“She took something.”

“What?”

“The ledger.”

I turned toward Caroline.

“You said my father took it.”

“He did.”

Grant laughed bitterly.

“Your wife's father took the first copy.”

I stared.

“First copy?”

Grant nodded.

“Anna made two.”

My mother whispered:

“Then the scrapbook
”

“Was never the real evidence,” Grant said.

My heart sank.

“What was?”

Grant looked at Caroline.

“Her recording.”

Caroline started crying.

I stepped toward her.

“You recorded Anna?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Grant answered.

“Anna did.”

He pulled a small cassette from his pocket.

“Her final recording.”

Caroline whispered:

“Where did you get that?”

“Your father gave it to me.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted me to destroy it.”

“Did you?”

Grant shook his head.

“No.”

“Then why keep it?”

“Because I was afraid.”

I stared at him.

“Of my family?”

“Of your father-in-law.”

“What happened to him?”

“He died.”

“How?”

“Heart attack.”

Grant looked at Caroline.

“At least that's what the report said.”

Caroline's face twisted.

“You think I killed my father?”

“I think you know more than you're admitting.”

She shook her head.

Grant placed the cassette on the table.

“Anna knew she was being watched.”

“Did she know about the brakes?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did she get into the car?”

“Because she was trying to escape.”

“From whom?”

“Your wife.”

Caroline broke down.

“That isn't true.”

Grant looked at her.

“You told Anna the meeting was safe.”

“It was.”

“You knew your father would be there.”

“I didn't know.”

“He called you fifteen minutes before.”

Caroline shook her head violently.

“No.”

Grant continued.

“You told Anna you could get her out.”

I looked at Caroline.

“Did you?”

She whispered:

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I was scared.”

“Scared of what?”

She looked at me.

“He said he'd destroy my life.”

“Who?”

“My father.”

Grant nodded.

“He told her he would blame everything on Caroline if Anna went to the police.”

“And Caroline believed him.”

“Yes.”

I couldn't stand it anymore.

“What did you do after the crash?”

Caroline closed her eyes.

“I took the recorder.”

Silence.

My hands went cold.

“Where is it?”

“I don't have it.”

“Who did you give it to?”

She swallowed.

“My father.”

“Why?”

“Because he said the recording could send all of us to prison.”

“You heard Anna's final words?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Caroline looked at me.

“Your name.”

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?”

“She said
”

Caroline began shaking.

“‘Michael, if you are hearing this, it means I failed.’”

I felt tears burn my eyes.

“Then what?”

Caroline looked down.

“She said, ‘Don't let them raise Lucy.’”

The room seemed to shrink.

“Who are they?”

Caroline whispered:

“I don't know.”

Grant said:

“You do.”

Caroline turned toward him.

“Stop.”

Grant's voice hardened.

“Tell him.”

She didn't.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.”

Caroline looked at me.

Then she said the one thing I had never expected.

“Your father was involved.”

I froze.

“My father?”

She nodded.

“Your father and mine.”

My mother sat down.

“No.”

Grant spoke quietly.

“They built the network together.”

“What network?”

He looked at me.

“The trust thefts.”

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“My father stole from Lucy?”

“Not just Lucy.”

Grant opened the ledger.

“Dozens of families.”

He turned another page.

“This was bigger than Anna.”

I looked down.

There were hundreds of names.

And then I saw one final line.

My father's name.

Beside it:

FINAL TRANSFER: PENDING

Date:

The day after Anna died.

I looked at Caroline.

“How did my father die?”

May you like

She whispered:

“He didn't.”
