Chapter 12 - My Father's SecretI couldn't breathe.

My father's voice filled the room.
A voice I had heard my entire childhood.
The voice that had taught me to ride a bicycle.
The voice that had congratulated me when Lucy was born.
The voice of a dead man.
Only he wasn't dead.
He was threatening my wife.
The recording continued.
Samuel said:
“What about Caroline?”
My father answered:
“She'll do what she's told.”
Caroline began shaking.
Samuel asked:
“And if she doesn't?”
A pause.
“Then her daughter disappears.”
I stopped the recording.
Everyone went silent.
Caroline was crying.
“You had a daughter?”
She nodded.
“Where is she?”
“Safe.”
“With whom?”
“My sister.”
I stared at her.
“You had a whole life I knew nothing about.”
“I was trying to keep her alive.”
“What happened to your father?”
“He used her as leverage.”
“And Samuel?”
“He knew.”
My mother walked toward Caroline.
“You should have told us.”
“I was scared.”
“So was Anna.”
Caroline looked at her.
“I know.”
We left the theater.
We went straight to the train station.
Locker 17.
The key fit.
Inside was a metal box.
A newspaper clipping.
A passport.
A USB drive.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed Anna.
She was standing beside a man.
My father.
But behind them was another person.
Samuel.
On the back, Anna had written:
The real architect.
I inserted the USB drive into my laptop.
There were folders.
Hundreds of files.
Bank transfers.
Forged signatures.
Voice recordings.
Insurance documents.
And one video.
I opened it.
My father was sitting at a desk.
Samuel stood behind him.
Caroline's father sat across the room.
Grant stood near the window.
My father said:
“Anna knows too much.”
Samuel answered:
“Then remove the problem.”
My father's expression hardened.
“No killing.”
Samuel asked:
“Why?”
“Because Michael will investigate.”
I felt my chest tighten.
Then Caroline's father said:
“Accidents happen.”
The video ended.
There was another file.
Recorded three days after Anna's death.
My father was alone.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If my son ever finds this, I want him to know one thing.”
I leaned closer.
“He was never supposed to inherit anything.”
I stared.
“What?”
The video continued.
“Lucy was.”
My heart stopped.
“My son was a liability.”
My mother covered her mouth.
“He was supposed to take the blame.”
I understood.
Everything.
The trust.
The forged will.
The missing money.
Anna's warnings.
My father's fake death.
The entire operation had been designed to eventually destroy me.
Not because I was the enemy.
Because I was the final sacrifice.
The video ended with one final statement.
“Samuel knows where the second ledger is.”
Then the screen went black.
I turned to Samuel's name in the files.
There was one location.
A private residence.
My blood went cold.
The address was familiar.
I knew that house.
I had visited it dozens of times.
It was Caroline's childhood home.
We arrived before dawn.
The front door was unlocked.
Inside, the house was dark.
A single light glowed upstairs.
Caroline whispered:
“My father.”
We climbed the stairs.
A bedroom door stood open.
Inside was a desk.
On the desk sat a photograph.
Of me.
Taken that week.
Beside it was a note.
You have until sunrise.
