Chapter 19 - The House My Mother Left BehindThe house stood outside Phoenix.

Hidden behind acres of desert.

Dust-covered.

Abandoned.

But not empty.

The front door had been forced open.

I entered with Mark and Melissa.

Every room contained something strange.

Photographs.

Files.

Old computers.

Boxes.

My childhood drawings.

My mother's clothes.

She had preserved everything.

Then we found the basement.

There was a steel door.

Mark entered a code.

The lock opened.

Inside was a wall covered in photographs.

Thousands.

Richard.

Judges.

Police chiefs.

Politicians.

Business executives.

And Daniel.

I found his photograph.

Under it was a handwritten note.

TRUSTED

Beside it was another.

FELL IN LOVE WITH RACHEL

I started crying.

Then I found myself.

My photograph was at the center.

My mother had drawn lines from me to everyone.

A network.

I followed one line.

It ended at Richard.

Another ended at Melissa.

Another at Mark.

And one ended at a name I didn't recognize.

Director Samuel Cross.

I turned toward Mark.

“Who is he?”

Mark went pale.

“The man who built Richard's network.”

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

I frowned.

“Then why is his line still active?”

Mark looked at the wall.

“Because someone took over.”

“Who?”

We heard a sound upstairs.

Footsteps.

Melissa grabbed Alyssa.

Mark reached for a weapon.

I stepped into the hallway.

Daniel's voice echoed from upstairs.

“Rachel?”

I froze.

“Daniel?”

He appeared at the top of the stairs.

He was pale.

Bandaged.

Alive.

I ran toward him.

“You shouldn't be here.”

He smiled.

“I heal fast.”

I hugged him.

Then pulled away.

“Where is Richard?”

“Gone.”

“What happened?”

“I followed him.”

“To where?”

Daniel looked at the wall.

Then his expression changed.

“He already found it.”

“Found what?”

“The original evidence.”

I frowned.

“What is that?”

He pointed behind the photographs.

There was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a single videotape.

My mother's final recording.

I played it.

Her voice filled the room.

“Rachel, if you're seeing this, then Richard has probably found the house.”

She paused.

“I need you to know one thing.”

The camera moved closer.

“I never abandoned you.”

I cried.

“I hid you because your father discovered that Richard had been stealing money from the Vale Trust.”

She explained everything.

Thomas wasn't my father.

Mark was.

Richard had framed Mark.

My mother had changed identities.

She had placed the inheritance in my name.

She had recruited Daniel years later.

She had created the entire network of evidence.

But there was one final secret.

“Richard isn't the final threat.”

The room went silent.

My mother's voice continued:

“There is someone above him.”

A name appeared on screen.

Samuel Cross.

I frowned.

“Dead six months ago.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That death was staged.”

The video continued.

“He is still alive.”

Then the camera turned.

A man entered the room.

I recognized him.

He had been my mother's doctor.

The same man who signed her death certificate.

And the video ended with his name.

Samuel Cross.

A sound came from behind us.

A slow clap.

We turned.

Richard stood in the doorway.

But he wasn't alone.

The man beside him was older.

Calm.

Smiling.

Alive.

Samuel Cross.

May you like

He looked at me.

“Hello, Rachel.”
