Chapter 18 - The Truth Behind Daniel“DANIEL!”

He was bleeding.
Alyssa screamed.
Mark lunged toward Richard.
Richard fired again.
The courthouse erupted into chaos.
Melissa grabbed Alyssa.
I dropped beside Daniel.
“Stay with me.”
He looked at me.
Blood stained his shirt.
“Listen.”
“No.”
“Rachel.”
“Help is coming.”
“Don't trust the police.”
“Stop saying that.”
He grabbed my hand.
“The ledger isn't money.”
“What?”
“It's names.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He coughed.
“It contains evidence.”
“Against Richard?”
“Against everyone.”
My chest tightened.
“Who is everyone?”
He looked at me.
“People inside the government.”
“Judges?”
“Yes.”
“Police?”
“Yes.”
“Politicians?”
“Yes.”
“And me?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Your name is there because you're the beneficiary.”
“Why?”
“Because the money was never stolen.”
I stared.
“What?”
“Your mother transferred it into the trust.”
“Why?”
“To expose the network.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Then Richard didn't want the money.”
“No.”
“He wanted the evidence.”
“Yes.”
“And he used me to get it.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you marry me?”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Because I was assigned to watch you.”
The words hurt.
Even after everything.
“Assigned?”
“Yes.”
“By who?”
“Your mother.”
I froze.
“My mother?”
“She didn't trust anyone else.”
“So you were working for her.”
“Yes.”
“All these years?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you lie?”
“Because I fell in love with you.”
I looked at him.
“You always say that.”
“Because it's true.”
He squeezed my hand.
“I was supposed to leave after I learned you were safe.”
“But you stayed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you became my family.”
I cried.
Not because everything was forgiven.
It wasn't.
Trust doesn't grow back because someone bleeds in front of you.
It has to be rebuilt.
Then Mark shouted:
“Rachel!”
I turned.
Richard was gone.
So was the ledger.
Alyssa was shaking.
Melissa held her.
Daniel struggled to sit up.
“He took the original.”
I looked at him.
“Where?”
“Your mother's house.”
“My mother is dead.”
“No.”
He pointed toward me.
“The house wasn't destroyed.”
“Where is it?”
He whispered an address.
I recognized it.
A property I had inherited years ago.
I had never visited.
I thought it was an abandoned family home.
Daniel looked at me.
“Richard will go there.”
“Why?”
“Because that's where your mother hid the real evidence.”
I stood.
“Then that's where we're going.”
Daniel grabbed my hand.
“Rachel.”
“Yes?”
“If I don't make it…”
“Don't.”
“Listen.”
I looked at him.
“I never wanted your money.”
His voice cracked.
“I wanted you.”
I squeezed his hand.
Then I left.
Because the truth was waiting.

And for the first time, I wasn't afraid of what I would find.
I was afraid of what it would cost me to learn it.
