Chapter 12 - Richard Carter SpeaksThe transmission lasted only thirty seconds.

But it destroyed eleven years of certainty.

Richard had spoken.

He had called my name.

He had warned me about my son.

Ethan looked devastated.

“Mom.”

I didn't answer.

“Mom, look at me.”

I did.

His eyes were full of tears.

“I didn't do anything.”

“I know.”

“Then why would Dad say that?”

“I don't know.”

Victor interrupted.

“The video could be manipulated.”

“It looked real.”

“That doesn't mean it is.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Richard's voice was real.”

I looked at her.

“You know something.”

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

“After the poisoning, Richard survived.”

My heart stopped.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because he was convinced someone would finish the job.”

“Who?”

He was afraid of everyone.

“Even Ethan?”

Evelyn looked toward my son.

“Especially him.”

I turned.

Ethan's face was pale.

“Why?”

“Because Ethan was the only person who could inherit everything.”

I stepped closer.

“My son was twenty-one.”

“Yes.”

“And you think he wanted his father dead?”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“I think Richard believed someone could manipulate him.”

“Who?”

“Thomas.”

It clicked.

Thomas had controlled the trust.

Thomas had access to the medical records.

Thomas had access to the estate.

And perhaps Thomas had manipulated Richard into believing Ethan was involved.

Victor pulled up another file.

“There's more.”

A recording surfaced.

Thomas speaking to Richard.

Thomas's voice:

“If your wife finds out what Ethan did, she will never forgive him.”

Richard responded:

“He's my son.”

Thomas:

“Then choose the business over the boy.”

The recording ended.

Ethan shook his head.

“I don't remember any of this.”

Victor studied the metadata.

“This was recorded eighteen months after Richard's supposed death.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“So Richard was alive.”

“Yes.”

“Why was the death certificate filed?”

“Because Thomas needed Richard to disappear.”

“From whom?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“From Patricia.”

Patricia.

The name seemed to follow us through every room.

Every account.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“My mother wanted Richard dead.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because he knew I wasn't the person she wanted me to be.”

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“She needed me to marry Ethan.”

“For the trust.”

“Yes.”

“But why?”

“Because Patricia can't control Ethan directly.”

“She thought marriage would give her control.”

Vanessa nodded.

“But there is one thing she never knew.”

“What?”

Vanessa reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small USB drive.

“My father confessed.”

Ethan stared.

“What did he confess?”

Vanessa handed it to Victor.

“Everything.”

Victor connected it.

Daniel's recorded voice filled the room.

“I didn't kill Richard.”

A pause.

“Patricia did.”

I stared at the screen.

Daniel continued.

“She poisoned him.”

“Then Thomas helped fake the death.”

“And the person who financed everything was...”

The recording cut out.

Victor frowned.

“It's corrupted.”

Vanessa whispered:

“My father gave me the missing part.”

She opened another file.

This one contained a single sentence.

The money came from Margaret Carter's own account.

I felt dizzy.

“What?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“They used your identity from the beginning.”

I stared at my own reflection in the dark screen.

For eleven years, I thought I was the victim.

Maybe I was.

But someone had built the entire operation using my name.

Then my phone rang.

Ethan answered.

A man's voice said:

“Bring Margaret to the church where Richard proposed.”

Then:

“Come alone.”

The call ended.

Ethan looked at me.

“I'm coming.”

“No.”

“Mom.”

May you like

I picked up my coat.

“Tonight, I want to know who has been hiding behind my name.”
