Chapter 11 - The Woman Wearing My NameThe bank froze the transfer within an hour.

But the damage had been done.

Someone had forged my signature.

Someone had access to my identity.

Someone had been moving money under my name for years.

The account wasn't just a secret trust.

It was a weapon.

Victor was released from the hospital under protection.

He examined the transfer.

“This is sophisticated.”

“How sophisticated?”

“Enough to fool a human auditor.”

Ethan looked at him.

“Can they do it again?”

“Yes.”

“How do we stop them?”

Victor looked at me.

“We find the person holding the original authorization token.”

“What token?”

“The trust uses a physical key.”

I remembered something.

The gold pendant Richard had given me.

I touched the chain around my neck.

Victor stared.

“Take it off.”

I did.

He examined the pendant.

Then turned it over.

A tiny seam appeared.

He used a small tool.

The pendant opened.

Inside was a microchip.

Ethan stared.

“What the hell?”

Victor smiled grimly.

“Your husband hid the master authorization.”

My hands shook.

“I wore this for eleven years.”

“Exactly.”

The person trying to steal the money needed the chip.

But someone had made copies.

“Can we trace the copied authorization?”

Victor nodded.

“Maybe.”

He connected the chip to a laptop.

A list appeared.

Seven access attempts.

Six successful.

One failed.

The successful attempts dated back years.

Locations appeared.

Chicago.

New York.

London.

Geneva.

And one local address.

Ethan recognized it.

“That is Vanessa's mother's house.”

Vanessa went silent.

Victor looked at her.

“Your mother has been using the trust.”

“I didn't know.”

“Not all of it.”

He pulled up a transaction.

Patricia had transferred money to another account.

The beneficiary name was hidden.

Evelyn leaned closer.

Then she whispered:

“Thomas.”

We all stared at her.

“Thomas Reed is alive.”

Victor nodded.

“He has been using a false identity.”

I asked:

“Where is he?”

Victor opened another file.

A photograph appeared.

Thomas Reed entering a private clinic.

Six weeks earlier.

The same clinic where Daniel Mitchell had allegedly treated his blood pressure.

Everything connected.

But there was more.

Victor enlarged the image.

A woman walked beside Thomas.

Patricia.

And beside her...

My breath stopped.

Richard Carter.

Alive.

I dropped the laptop.

The room went silent.

Ethan whispered:

“That can't be my father.”

Victor quickly replayed the image.

The man looked older.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

Same eyes.

Same scar above the eyebrow.

Same posture.

Evelyn began crying.

“No.”

I stepped toward the screen.

“Where was this taken?”

“Switzerland.”

“When?”

“Six weeks ago.”

I couldn't speak.

For eleven years, I had mourned my husband.

I had kept his clothes in a box.

I had visited his grave.

I had taught Ethan to remember his father.

Now I was staring at a man who looked exactly like Richard.

Then Victor zoomed in again.

There was one detail.

A hospital bracelet around the man's wrist.

Victor read the code.

“Neurological ward.”

Ethan backed away.

“What are you saying?”

“I don't know.”

Then the room's television switched on by itself.

A live video appeared.

Richard sat in a wheelchair.

An unseen person stood behind him.

A voice spoke.

“Margaret.”

My blood froze.

“You spent eleven years looking for a dead man.”

The camera moved closer.

Richard lifted his eyes.

May you like

And whispered:

“Margaret... don't trust Ethan.”
