Chapter 4 - The Name on the Birth CertificateThe following morning, Detective Cole brought an investigator from the county family services unit.

Her name was Mara Ellis.
She sat beside me while Emma slept.
âI'm going to ask you some difficult questions,â she said.
âGo ahead.â
âWas Emma conceived through assisted reproduction?â
âNo.â
âWas there ever a dispute regarding paternity?â
âNo.â
âWere you married when she was born?â
âYes.â
âIs Emma's biological father listed on her birth certificate?â
âYes.â
She paused.
âHas anyone ever suggested otherwise?â
I remembered my mother's strange comments.
Years ago, she'd once told me Emma had my husband's eyes.
I thought nothing of it.
Now everything felt different.
Mara slid a document toward me.
A laboratory report.
It was not a paternity test.
It was a mitochondrial DNA test.
My mother's name was on it.
I stared.
âWhat is this?â
âYour parents ordered genetic testing six months ago.â
âWhy?â
âThat's what we're trying to establish.â
I couldn't stop staring at the page.
Then something occurred to me.
âMy father had cancer.â
âHe did?â
âYears ago. But he recovered.â
Mara nodded.
âWas Emma's biological father ever tested?â
âNo.â
Mara folded the report.
âThen this may be part of why your family wanted custody.â
I looked toward Emma.
âBut why would they want her?â
Mara hesitated.
âFinancial reasons may be involved.â
She handed me another paper.
A trust.
My father's name.
The beneficiary designation listed Emma Hart.
My daughter's future inheritance was estimated at several million dollars.
I had known my father was wealthy.
I had never known there was a trust.
âWhat happens to it if I have custody?â
âYou control it as her parent until she's an adult.â
âAnd if someone else has custody?â
âControl can change depending on the court order and trustee structure.â
My stomach tightened.
âSo if my parents got Emma removed from me...â
âThey could petition for control.â
The pieces began fitting together.
My sister's accusations.
The secret custody file.
The photographs.
The life insurance policy.
The strange DNA test.
The attack.
Then I remembered the message.
I told Vanessa to handle Emma before you came downstairs.
My mother wasn't trying to discipline Emma.
She was trying to create an event.
An event that would let them control what happened next.
At noon, Detective Cole called.
âWe recovered the deleted camera footage.â
My heart raced.
âWhat does it show?â
âThere are missing frames.â
âHow many?â
âTwenty-three seconds.â
âCan you restore them?â
âNot all.â
âWhat remains?â
He sent me a clip.
I watched it on my phone.
At 8:16:32, Emma walked toward Lily's chair.
At 8:16:39, Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
At 8:16:44, my mother picked up her phone.
At 8:16:51, she said something.
I turned the volume higher.
The audio crackled.
Then her voice emerged.
âNow.â
The frame jumped.
Vanessa lifted the skillet.
Emma turned.
The clip cut.
I covered my mouth.
Then another fragment appeared.
My father moved toward Emma.
Not to help her.
To pick up something from the floor.
A small paper.
Detective Cole paused the frame.
âWhat is that?â
I zoomed in.
It looked like a handwritten note.
Three lines.
The final line was visible.
Bring the envelope to the basement.
âWhat envelope?â
Detective Cole sent another photograph.
A cardboard storage box had been found in my parents' basement.
Inside were old medical records.
Adoption paperwork.
Hospital forms.
And a birth certificate.
Not Emma's.
Mine.
I stared at the name of my mother.
Then the hospital of birth.
Then the line marked biological father.
A name I had never heard in my life.
May you like
Detective Cole said:
âWe may have just found the secret your parents have spent twenty years protecting.â
