Chapter 14 - The Man in the Hospital BasementWe found my father two days later.

Not in another state.
Not overseas.
At a private rehabilitation facility under a different name.
He was alive.
Weak.
Confused.
And terrified.
When Detective Cole showed him a photograph of my mother, he began crying.
“She said you would find me.”
I sat beside his bed.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”
He looked at me.
“Because I wanted to keep you alive.”
“What does that mean?”
He closed his eyes.
“She was never afraid of losing the money.”
“Then what was she afraid of?”
“Losing control.”
He told us everything.
My mother had built the entire scheme around the Mercer trust.
But there was a deeper secret.
The trust wasn't simply inherited money.
It contained intellectual property, medical patents and ownership stakes in several private companies.
Anyone who controlled the trust effectively controlled a business empire.
My mother had wanted it.
But she couldn't access it directly.
The only route was through me.
Then through my children.
She manipulated my marriage.
She monitored my pregnancy.
She arranged secret medical procedures.
And when Emma was born, she began preparing for the day she could control the trust.
My father had initially helped.
Until he changed his mind.
“Why?”
“Because of the children.”
He looked at me.
“They were innocent.”
“So you disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“My mother told me you were dead.”
“She tried to kill me.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“She poisoned me.”
My blood ran cold.
“She thought I was unconscious.”
“I survived.”
“And you hid?”
“For years.”
“Why didn't you contact me?”
“She had people watching you.”
I started crying.
“All this time...”
He nodded.
“I was afraid that speaking would make her hurt you.”
“Why didn't Ethan know?”
“He did.”
My heart broke all over again.
“My husband knew?”
“He knew enough.”
That explained everything.
At 10:00 p.m., Detective Cole received the final forensic report.
The blood on the skillet belonged to Emma.
But there was another DNA profile.
Vanessa's.
And another.
My mother's.
Both had touched the weapon.
But the fingerprints on the handle did not match Vanessa.
They matched my mother.
The pan had been held by her.
Not just before.
During.
The prosecution could now establish physical involvement.
Then we found the final recording.
It had been saved on my father's old device.
My mother was speaking to someone the night before the attack.
A man.
His identity was clear.
Ethan.
She said:
“Tomorrow Rachel loses control.”
Ethan asked:
“And Emma?”
My mother replied:
“She'll be frightened.”
“And Mia?”
“Hidden.”
“And if Rachel fights?”
A pause.
“Then we use the trust clause.”
The man asked:
“What if the police learn about the children?”
My mother laughed softly.
“They won't.”
Then came the last sentence.
One sentence that changed the entire case.
“Because the woman who created the first child is also the reason the fourth one exists.”
Detective Cole replayed it.
“What does she mean?”
My father looked at me.
“She didn't create Mia from your genes alone.”
I stared at him.
“What else?”
He whispered:
“She used your mother's DNA too.”
I looked toward the sleeping room where Emma and Mia were being protected.
Four children.
Three adults.
One trust.
And a secret genetic line my mother had spent decades trying to control.
But the story still had one final piece.
The person who had bought the fourth embryo.
The person who had been moving children through private clinics.
Lucas.
Detective Cole found his location.
And when police opened the final file on his laptop, they discovered a video.
Lucas was speaking directly into the camera.
He looked exhausted.
“I know what my grandmother did.”
He paused.
“But she wasn't the mastermind.”
Then he named the person above her.
And the name was mine.
Rachel Hart.

My mother had framed me as the architect.
The final trap was already waiting.
