Chapter 11: The Choice

The steel barriers slammed into place with a deafening crash.
Every exit vanished behind thick reinforced doors.
The hallway lights flickered once before shifting to a cold white glow.
A calm voice echoed through hidden speakers.
David Reynolds.
"Welcome to the final lesson."
His tone carried the confidence of someone who believed he had already won.
Lily instinctively stepped behind me.
Ava grabbed her hand.
The two girls refused to let go of each other.
The Countdown
A large digital screen descended from the ceiling at the end of the corridor.
Red numbers flashed.
20:00
Twenty minutes.
Then Reynolds spoke again.
"Michael... you've always fascinated me."
"You were never supposed to become part of Project Sparrow."
"But then Lily was born."
"And you proved our research correct."
I clenched my fists.
"What do you want?"
"I want to show everyone the difference between love..."
"...and instinct."
The timer began counting down.
19:52
The Impossible Choice
The screen changed.
A blueprint of the underground complex appeared.
Three sections glowed red.
Wing A
Wing B
Wing C
Reynolds continued.
"The emergency system has sealed every wing."
"You have enough time to unlock only one."
"If you choose correctly..."
"...those children live."
"If you choose incorrectly..."
"...the others die."
The words echoed through the corridor.
My father stared at the screen in disbelief.
"He's lying."
Hayes wasn't so sure.
"He built this place."
"He may have wired the entire system."
Panic
The rescued children began crying.
Several clung to one another.
Others called for parents who weren't there.
A young boy, no older than six, asked quietly,
"Are we in trouble again?"
Again.
The word hurt almost as much as Lily's earlier confession.
This wasn't the first time they'd lived through fear.
Hayes Thinks
Detective Hayes examined the blueprint.
"Something doesn't fit."
He zoomed in on the map recovered from the blue-jacketed woman.
"The dimensions are wrong."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
He pointed toward the walls.
"The hallways on this blueprint are wider than the building above."
"There has to be..."
He stopped.
"...another level."
The Hidden Message
Lily looked around the hallway.
Then at the fake family photographs hanging outside every bedroom.
She walked toward one frame.
A smiling couple.
A little boy.
Perfect.
She reached up and turned the frame sideways.
Written on the back in blue marker were two words.
LOOK BELOW
Every frame.
Quickly, we removed them.
Behind each one was a number.
Hayes suddenly understood.
"They're coordinates."
The numbers formed a pattern leading to one section of the floor.
My father began pulling up carpet tiles.
Nothing.
Then Lily knelt beside the last coordinate.
She tapped the floor twice.
"Hollow."
An officer struck the tile with the butt of his rifle.
CRACK.
Concrete gave way.
Beneath it lay a narrow maintenance shaft.
Large enough for one adult at a time.
Hayes smiled.
"Our helper left us another path."
The Woman in Blue
As if on cue, a security door farther down the corridor opened.
The blonde woman in the blue jacket stepped through.
She immediately raised both hands.
"I'm not armed."
Several officers aimed their weapons.
"Don't shoot!"
Hayes studied her carefully.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Rachel."
"I've worked here for four years."
"Why help us now?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because I finally remembered my real name."
Silence.
She continued.
"I wasn't hired."
"I was taken."
Every person in the hallway froze.
Rachel swallowed.
"I grew up here."
"They convinced me my parents abandoned me."
"They changed my name."
"They erased everything."
She looked toward the frightened children.
"I won't let them do it again."
Reynolds Reveals Himself
The speakers clicked once more.
"Rachel."
His voice carried disappointment.
"I expected better from you."
She looked directly at the nearest camera.
"No."
"You expected obedience."
The camera slowly rotated toward her.
Then another.
And another.
Every camera in the hallway focused only on Rachel.
Reynolds sighed.
"You've forced my hand."
The lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the corridor.
Children screamed.
For three endless seconds...
Nothing.
Then emergency lights flickered on.
Red.
Dim.
Enough to see.
Rachel had disappeared.
Only a small keycard remained on the floor where she'd been standing.
No blood.
No struggle.
Just...
Gone.
The Elevator Moves
A deep mechanical rumble shook the underground complex.
The hidden elevator began descending by itself.
But no one had pressed a button.
Hayes stared toward the shaft.
"Someone's coming up."
The digital timer continued its relentless countdown.
11:43
The elevator stopped.
The doors slid open slowly.
Standing inside, perfectly composed, wearing a charcoal suit without a single wrinkle...
was David Reynolds.
He stepped into the hallway alone.
No weapon.
No bodyguards.
He smiled gently at Lily.
Then looked at me.
"Michael."
"I've wanted to meet you properly for a very long time."
He folded his hands behind his back as though greeting guests at a conference rather than standing inside an underground prison.
Then his smile widened ever so slightly.
"Now..."

"Let's see whether a father's love is truly stronger than fear."
