Chapter 1: The Eyes Behind the Patio Door

My blood froze.
Standing beside the patio doors, one hand wrapped around a porcelain coffee cup, was my older brother, Daniel.
He wasn't moving.
He wasn't speaking.
He simply stared at Lily with an expression that disappeared the instant our eyes met.
Then he smiled.
Not warmly.
Not nervously.
It was the kind of smile someone forces onto their face after realizing they've been caught watching something they shouldn't have.
Behind me, the backyard remained silent.
More than fifty guests had witnessed me strike Tessa.
Most of them still believed I had overreacted.
But none of them had heard Lily's trembling confession.
She buried her face against my shoulder again.
Her tiny body shook uncontrollably.
"Daddy..."
I gently stroked her hair.
"It's okay, sweetheart."
"No one's going to hurt you again."
Daniel finally set his cup onto the patio table and walked toward us with slow, measured steps.
"What exactly is going on?" he asked calmly.
His voice sounded almost too calm.
Too controlled.
Tessa was already climbing to her feet, holding one reddened cheek.
Her expensive white dress was stained with red wine and bits of broken glass clung to the fabric.
She pointed at me.
"You assaulted me in front of everyone!"
Several relatives immediately rushed toward her.
"Oh my God..."
"Look what he did!"
"This has gone way too far."
Only my father remained silent.
He stood near the barbecue grill, watching Lily instead of either of us.
He noticed the bruises.
I could see it in his eyes.
Daniel glanced at Lily's arm.
"Where did those marks come from?"
His question sounded convincing.
If I hadn't seen Lily's reaction...
I might have believed him.
Lily suddenly tightened her grip around my neck so hard it hurt.
"No..."
She whispered.
"No..."
She wouldn't even look at him.
Children rarely lie about fear.
Especially children who don't yet understand what lying can cost.
I stepped backward.
"Don't come any closer."
Daniel stopped.
Confusion crossed his face.
"Are you serious?"
"You think I'd hurt my own niece?"
Before I could answer, Lily whispered into my ear.
"He locked the door..."
The words were so soft that only I heard them.
Everything inside me stopped.
"What door?" I asked quietly.
She began crying harder.
"The little room..."
Her breathing became uneven.
"The dark room..."
I looked around the property.
The backyard connected directly to my parents' old farmhouse.
Storage rooms lined one side of the building.
Garden tools.
Cleaning supplies.
Old furniture.
One room near the garage had always been kept locked.
I remembered it instantly.
My mother hurried forward.
"She's confused."
"Lily's frightened."
"Children imagine things."
I looked directly at her.
"How do you know she's imagining them?"
She hesitated.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Daniel answered instead.
"Mom's right."
"She's traumatized."
"Kids mix dreams with reality."
Lily suddenly screamed.
"No!"
The sound shattered every conversation in the yard.
She pointed directly at Daniel.
"He closed the door!"
Every face turned toward him.
Daniel's expression cracked for the first time.
Only slightly.
Only enough for someone paying close attention to notice.
He forced a laugh.
"She's four."
"She probably dreamed it."
I looked down at Lily.
"Sweetheart..."
"What happened inside that room?"
Her lips trembled violently.
She tried to answer.
No sound came out.
Then she buried her face against me again.
My father finally walked over.
He crouched beside Lily.
His weathered hands shook slightly.
"Lily..."
"Grandpa needs you to answer one question."
She slowly peeked up.
"Were you inside Grandpa's storage room?"
She nodded.
The color drained from his face.
My father stood so quickly that the chair behind him tipped over.
He looked toward my mother.
"Why was that room unlocked?"
She blinked.
"It wasn't."
"I always keep it locked."
Daniel answered almost instantly.
"I saw Tessa near there earlier."
Tessa whipped around.
"What?"
"Don't you dare blame me!"
"I wasn't anywhere near that room!"
They immediately began shouting over each other.
Guests stepped backward.
Nobody knew what was happening anymore.
I wasn't listening.
I carried Lily toward the garage.
Behind me, voices erupted.
"Where are you going?"
"Stop him!"
"Someone call the police!"
My father grabbed my shoulder.
"Wait."
His face looked twenty years older than it had an hour ago.
"I have the key."
"You won't get inside otherwise."
He reached into his pocket.
Pulled out a heavy brass key.
Then stopped.
His hand froze halfway toward me.
His eyes widened.
"The key..."
His fingers slowly opened.
The key wasn't there.
Only the empty keychain remained.
Silence.
He whispered almost to himself.
"I had it this morning."
Daniel immediately spoke.
"Maybe you misplaced it."
My father didn't answer.
Instead...
He looked directly at my mother.
She couldn't meet his eyes.
Not even for one second.
Something passed silently between them.
A conversation without words.
Twenty-eight years of marriage compressed into one horrifying glance.
My father slowly asked,
"Margaret..."
"Did you give someone the key?"
She swallowed.
"No."
He took another step toward her.
"Are you sure?"
Her voice became smaller.
"I..."
Before she could finish...
A sharp metallic clang echoed from inside the farmhouse.
Everyone turned.
It came from the hallway leading toward the storage rooms.
Another sound followed.
A door closing.
Hard.
Someone was inside the house.
My father didn't hesitate.
He sprinted toward the back entrance.
I followed close behind, still carrying Lily.
Daniel shouted after us.
"Wait!"
But I didn't stop.
Neither did my father.
We burst through the kitchen.
The hallway stretched ahead.
Three storage room doors stood open.
The fourth...
The old locked room...
Was closed.
Fresh scratches marked the bottom of the door.
As though someone had dragged something heavy across the floor only moments earlier.
Lily buried her face deeper into my shoulder.
"No..."
She whispered.
"Don't open it."
Then...
From the other side of the door...
A child's music box began to play.
A slow, delicate lullaby.
One Lily had never heard before.
Yet the moment the melody reached her ears...
May you like
She started screaming.
