Chapter 17 - WHICH SISTER IS REAL?The courtroom descended into chaos.

The judge ordered everyone to remain seated.
Daniel continued smiling.
He had expected this moment.
Maybe he had designed it.
He produced DNA records.
Travel documents.
Birth certificates.
Hospital records.
Everything identifying me as Elise Mercer.
And identifying Elise as Lauren Bennett.
The documents were convincing.
Too convincing.
My attorney looked horrified.
“Your Honor, these records must be independently verified.”
Daniel said calmly:
“They have been.”
I looked at Ethan.
He whispered:
“It's a switch.”
“What?”
“He anticipated us.”
Daniel had planted identity evidence years ago.
Every official system now told the same story.
I wasn't Lauren.
Elise was.
I suddenly understood the genius of the plan.
He didn't need to prove I was fake.
He only needed to make the truth impossible to verify.
Because identity is a network.
Birth certificate.
Passport.
Tax records.
School records.
Medical records.
Bank accounts.
If enough records point in one direction, people believe them.
Daniel had spent decades corrupting that network.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
My father entered.
The room went silent.
Daniel's face changed for the first time.
Richard Bennett walked to the front.
He looked at the judge.
“My daughter's biological identity can be proven.”
Daniel's voice became sharp.
“You are dead.”
My father smiled.
“Apparently not.”
The judge ordered a recess.
Outside, Daniel's lawyers surrounded him.
I turned to my father.
“Can you prove who I am?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
He reached into his coat.
A small metal box.
Inside was an old hospital bracelet.
My name.
A fingerprint.
A tiny blood card.
Stored for twenty-five years.
My father explained that when I was born, Vera had insisted on preserving my newborn blood sample because she feared Daniel would try to claim custody.
The sample had been frozen.
Still viable.
Still testable.
Elise pulled out another document.
“There's more.”
She had found a private family Bible.
Inside was an old photograph of Vera holding two babies.
One had my bracelet.
The other had Elise's.
Two girls.
One mother.
One father.
The entire story existed outside Daniel's fabricated records.
But then Daniel made his final move.
He stood at the courthouse door.
“Test the blood.”
My father looked at him.
“We will.”
Daniel smiled.
“Then you'll discover something interesting.”
“What?”
“That Lauren isn't the only person with Mercer blood.”
He looked toward Victoria.
My sister froze.
Daniel continued.
“Victoria is too.”
Victoria's face went white.
The courtroom fell silent.
Daniel had one final biological connection.
Victoria.
If Victoria was also a Mercer descendant, she could challenge the inheritance.
But why had he hidden that?
Because he wanted us fighting.
He wanted the trust divided.
He wanted confusion.
Then Ethan received a message.
He read it.
His face changed.
“Lauren.”
“What?”
“We found where Mason is.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
“Daniel's estate.”
“And Victoria?”
“She isn't there.”
“Then where is she?”
Ethan hesitated.
“She's with him.”
“Who?”
He showed me the message.
A photograph.
Victoria standing beside Daniel.
And behind them…
My mother.
Alive.
My blood turned cold.
The three people I had spent years fighting against were standing together.
But my mother wasn't tied up.
May you like
She wasn't afraid.
She was smiling.
